They produced some exciting rugby and it was an outstanding effort. From a HFH U7's point of view, all thirteen players that performed made their coaches and parents so very proud. Both in attack and defence the HFH U7's were simply superb and they won the game 6 tries to 1.

Leigh Miners v's Halton F H
HFH travelled to Leigh Miners for their third fixture of the season. They came up against a very strong-minded attacking Miner's side that crossed for the first try of the match. This incident seemed to waken-up the HFH side because they soon got to grips with the game and brought themselves up to speed. In attack HFH where relentless, scoring tries from all over the park. Most impressive though for HFH was their defensive skills. Halton F H v's Newton Storm
HFH U7`s lost there first game of the season against a well organised Newton Storm. The HFH performance was well below the standard that they have set themselves so far this season. The main strong point of this U7`s side is their defence. Strangely enough though, for this game the defensive line was paper-thin!One positive to come from the game was how each HFH player never gave up trying. It was just unfortunate that it was "just one of those bad days at the office".

Halton F H v's Ince Rose Bridge
HFH entertained Ince Rose Bridge in conditions that were perfect for rugby league.A special mention must go to Jamie Grimes and Harry Smith who played for Rose Bridge due to the away team having to travel with only 8 players. The game was a tight affair with both sets of defences on top. Credit must also go to both sides for playing the game in a great spirit and virtually mistake free.In attack Lewis Bates, Thomas Craig, Ellis Smith, Brandon Fahey and Will Tilleke drove the ball in hard and straight when they had the ball.Sam Collinson and Alex Curlett produced some lovely touches with some great off loads.Defensively as a unit HFH were solid with Quinn Hughes, Evan Purvis, Jonathan Spruce, Nathan Black and Ben Davies worked tirelessly.Well done to all concerned.

Leigh Miners v's Halton F H
HFH U7's got back to winning ways with an outstanding team performance away at Leigh Miners Ranger. This was probably the best display of the season so far.HFH had to work really hard as a defensive unit due to the large pitch and the strong running of the Leigh team.Dominate in defence was Lewis Bates, Jayden Hatton, Alex Curlett, Thomas Craig and Sam Collinson. In attack HFH were outstanding scoring some wonderful tries. The most pleasing aspect of the HFH attack was how each and every player ran onto the ball with each player running hard and straight and never once went in to touch. Will Tilleke, Ellis Smith, Jonathan Kirby and Callum Tollitt all ran direct and by doing this they made some impressive metres up the field.Richard Hartley and Harry Smith both had solid all round games with Harry Smith creating a lovely try for Will Tilleke with a well timed off load on the last tackle.Special mentions must go to Kane Fletcher, Evan Purvis and Will Tilleke for scoring their first tries in the HFH colours.Well done to all concerned.

Wigan St Judes v's Halton F H
HFH travelled to Wigan St Jude's for this week's fixture and the game fully rings true with the quotation... "A game of two halves."An impressive St Judes side started the first half very strongly. In defence they got into HFH face's forcing HFH to turn the ball over on the last tackle on all of their sets.In attack St Jude's ran hard and from deep positions and it was a great credit to the HFH defence that the Jude's only manage to score three tries. All of the HFH players contributed in defence with Lewis Bates, Harry Smith, Ben Davies and Brandon Fahey produced some outstanding efforts. The second half was a complete turn around as HFH started to run onto the ball and at the same time began to run straight with it. Will Tilleke, Jamie Grimes, Evan Purvis and Thomas Craig all made great in roads into the Judes half.Whilst the above made good yards, Jonathan Spruce, Kane Fletcher, Nathan Black and Alex Curlett all kept a steady ship by doing the solid unseen graft both in attack and defence. As a result of the HFH defensive efforts they managed to keep the Jude's side scoreless for the whole of the second half. After the performance of the first half, it just showed that this was a fantastic effort.Unfortunately for HFH they only managed to cross for two tries but what tries they were.Firstly, after probing runs from Ellis Smith, Brandon Fahey and Will Tilleke, Thomas Craig ran out wide beating the covering Jude's defence to score in the corner. Next was Jamie Grimes who made a strong run and with Evan Purvis bursting onto the ball, showed some lovely footwork to then out sprint the Jude's defence to score a terrific try. This was a superb game of rugby and it was a shame for both sides that there had to be a loser. All coaches and parents can be proud of the HFH efforts.

Portico v's Halton F H HFH U7`s travelled away for the third week on the spin with this weekends game being staged in St Helens against Portico.Due to the large squad numbers, HFH rotated a number of players, with those players who missed out last week, actually playing this week.Like most weeks, HFH were outstanding in defence as they managed to stop Portico from scoring a single try.For any team, whether U7's or Super League, it is an outstanding effort to keep the opposition out.Leading the way in defence was Sam Collinson, Jamie Grimes, Jonathan Kirby, Brandon Fahey and Alex Curlett. As an attacking unit, today's showing was very impressive with each and every player starting to take all the hard work that they are producing at the training ground, on to the field of play.Kane Fletcher, Ben Davies, Will Tilleke, Nathan Black and Jonathan Spruce all attacked strongly making impressive yards going hard and straight with every drive.Remarkably, in today's game, HFH had three players all scoring hat tricks. These were Thomas Craig, Jayden Hatton and Harry Smith. To score a hat trick of tries at any level is a fantastic achievement. From the coaches and parents congratulations to the three playersFull marks must also go to Portico for not letting their heads drop. HFH were back in action after the Christmas break they entertained the hard working and well organized Portico Panthers.HFH utilised 16 player's from their large squad and each player can be pleased with their efforts, especially in defence as time and time again they forced Portico into last tackle turnovers. In attack HFH caused Portico problems from all over the field, scoring some lovely tries from long distance solo efforts. There was some great teamwork to and fine tries from some outstanding off loads. Will Tilleke in particular deserves a huge rap for showing wonderful handling skills.Another player who deserves a mention is Quinn Hughes. Wigan St Cuthberts v's Halton F H
HFH travelled to Wigan St Cuthbert's on a cold and miserable Sunday morning, and full credit must go to both sets of players and coaches for producing an excellent game of rugby league. This was only St Cuthbert's second game of the season and unfortunately they are currently running with a squad of seven registered players. In an attempt to balance the indifference in numbers, HFH allowed some of their players to play for St Cuthbert's to make the sides equal at nine a side.A big thank you goes to Lewis Bates, Quinn Hughes, Callum Tollitt and Sam Collinson for turning out for St Cuthbert's.It was the HFH outstanding defence that set the platform for this win, Will Tilleke, Ben Davies, Jamie Grimes, Alex Curlett and Jayden Hatton in particular, all led from the front making some crunching tackles.Slowly but surely HFH are picking up on the things that they are currently working on in training, i.e. running on to the ball and quick clean "play the ball's".Brandon Fahey, Jonathan Spruce and Ellis Smith worked hard in those area's today. Thanks as always to the parent's for their support.

Atherton Dragons v's Halton F
HHFH were back in action this week with an away trip to Atherton Dragons.Full marks must go to all concerned at Atherton Dragons for managing to get this game played. Due to the recent batch of bad weather conditions all sporting fields have experienced, Atherton Dragons must have worked tirelessly preparing the pitch. The performance of the HFH U7`s was, without doubt, their best display of the season so far. In defence each and every player worked tirelessly for one another and the player`s attitude, when it comes to defending, is simply outstanding.Take nothing away from Atherton though who contributed to a great game of rugby. They are a well-organized and strong running outfit whose players only know one way to run, and that`s hard and straight. In attack HFH once again scored some cracking tries, with none more so than Kane Fletcher`s, who scored a beauty by way of beating a couple of defenders and then straightening up to out-sprint the covering defence. After this performance, all the HFH U7`s players deserve a big pat on the back for their efforts. Halton F H v's Leigh Miners
HFH U7's were back in action after having a weekend off last week and they played host to Leigh Miners. This was the forth meeting between the two sides and as in previous games, the match turned out to be an excellent encounter between two fully committed teams. Each and every player deserves huge praise for today`s efforts. The weather conditions were awful with the wind penetrating and the artic conditions bring with it the rain, which at times was cutting sideways into the players mere fragile frames.HFH utilised only fifteen players this week due to an illness sweeping through the camp. The first half was an even contest with both teams attacking and defending really well. The HFH U7`s team went in at half time 4 tries to 3 up.The second half brought a more solid defensive effort from HFH team. The rearranging of their defences was keystone in the players managing to keep Leigh Miners scoreless for the whole of the second half. The ball handling on show from both sides was excellent when you consider the weather conditions.Brandon Fahey deserves a special mention because today Brandon scored his first try in the HFH colours.A big `Well Done` to all concerned.

Ryland Sharks v's Halton F H
HFH came away with the spoils at near neighbours Rylands.Today's game was a tight defensive affair and this was mainly due to the small pitch. The most pleasing aspect of today's game for HFH U7`s was the way that every player involved contributed to their defensive job's. On each `set` the HFH defensive line was spread out across the pitch and the all the players moved in as a unit in a single line.In attack both teams ball skills were excellent, with each side continuously looking for the `off-load`.A choir of congratulations go to both sets of players for an excellent morning's presentation of junior rugby league.

Halton F H v's Wigan St Judes
HFH lost their first game in 2007 to a well-organized and hard working Wigan St Judes side. The conditions, not for the first time this season, were atrocious but each and every player involved deserves huge credit, for the duration of the game.An untypical Sunday morning for March, both sides had to contend with all the four seasons thrown into one. The game would be strolling along with brilliant sunshine one-minute, and then the next thing, the skies blacken and a blizzard of hailstones come showering down. This was an experience for the players!Nonetheless, the game itself was a great spectacle considering the elements, and some of the ball skills and off-loads were outstanding. Unfortunately for the players and the parents alike, the weather was crowned winner in the end, as the referee was forced to end the game prematurely on the grounds of atrocious and prevailing weather conditions. All the U7`s players then legged it to the changing rooms!

Blackbrook v's Halton F H
HFH travelled to Blackbrook for this eagerly awaited encounter and what an encounter it was! When both sets of players took to the pitch, they didn't fail to impress. Right from the first whistle the two sides got stuck into one another with no nonsense solid defending. Leading the way in defence for HFH was Jayden Hatton, Jamie Grimes, Quinn Hughes, Will Tilleke and Kane Fletcher. The defensive efforts on show from HFH were outstanding and time and time again they cancelled out all that Blackbrook could throw at them.In attack the ball skills on show from HFH were also excellent. The amount of completed sets from both teams was fantastic. When HFH had the ball Ben Davies, Thomas Craig, Jonathan Kirby, Evan Purvis and Sam Collinson made solid ground but as with the Hornets, the Blackbrook defence was standing firm and solid.Eventually Blackbrook crossed for the first try of the match but Jayden Hatton was quick to reply for HFH. He crossed the Blackbrook line after one of his typical `mazy` run's that left a number of Blackbrook defender's chasing shadows. On their last set of the first half, Jamie Grimes came storming onto the ball to burst through and cross for a try without any defender's laying a finger on him. Disappointment came for HFH just before half time, when Blackbrook scored on their last set to make it 2-2.The second half started just how the first half had began with both defences cancelling each other out. Then came the try of the match. Ben Davies carried the ball from deep inside his own half, and penetrated the Blackbrook defences to gain territorial advantage. He over powered through three Blackbrook defender's then had the speed and awareness to out sprint the covering defence to cross for a beauty of a try.Once again credit must go to Blackbrook who refused to lie down. They came back with two further tries of their own but the winning try was heart breaker for HFH team. It came on the last tackle of the last set of the game, and then the final whistle was sounded. What a fantastic game of rugby league this was! Played by wholehearted and totally committed six and seven year olds. Both team were a credit to themselves, and whom they represent.

Halton F H v's Clock Face
HFH played host to Clockface for the second time this season.HFH used 17 players for this week's match and the ball skills shown by these players, and their opponents, was top notch. Both teams completed their sets of six to a high standard. One of HFH U7`s strength's this year has been their defence work. Today though, and early on in the game, they seemed to appear half asleep on the fringes. This laziness out wide enabled Clockface to get run around them, without the need to bulldoze their way through them. As the game went on, HFH started to get their act together and defended, as we all know they can.Congratulations to all concerned, with a special mention going to Nathan Gollins who made his debut in the HFH colours. Nathan made a solid start to his rugby career. Well-done Nathan.

Time and time again the HFH defensive line `held their own` against some strong drives by Leigh East forwards. As an attacking unit all 18 players did the jobs asked of them on the match day.Nathan Gollins scored his first try in HFH colours, so it`s "Well Done" Nathan.

Fitton Hill v's Halton F H The HFH U7`s travelled to Oldham with only 13 players, to play the recently formed new side Fitton Hill.Fitton Hill won the toss and chose to attack first. This first defensive set by the HFH team laid the stall out for the majority of the game. The HFH players worked as a unit going into the tackles in two's and three's stopping the off-load.In attack HFH worked hard at ball control and staying in the field of play. Each player can feel proud of their efforts with the ball today, none more so than Evan Purvis and Lewis Bates who each scored a wonderful hat trick of tries.Sam Collinson also deserves a special mention. Sam has worked hard at his game all season but without the reward of crossing the whitewash. Well today was that day, after having an effort controversially ruled out by the referee (Lloyd).Sam responded by scoring a beauty and therefore registering his first try in HFH colours.Congratulations to all involved.

Halton F H v's Newton Storm
HFH today entertained Newton Storm, with this being the third time these two sides have met. It was one victory each in terms of the previous meetings. Both sides deserve huge praise for entertaining the large crowd that had gathered to watch this clash. After winning the toss, Captain for the day Ciaran O'Donnell chose to attack. With the first set of six, HFH were to score the opening try of the game through the strong running Evan Purvis. Evan's try came off the back of good work from Ben Davies, Quinn Hughes and Thomas Craig. In defence HFH were superb once again. Time and time again they forced Newton Storm into turning the ball over; credit though to Newton Storm who tried everything they could to break HFH's defensive line. Leading the way in defence was Will Tilleke, Harry Smith, Kane Fletcher and Jayden Hatton.Next to score for HFH was Jonathan Kirby. This came about after Alex Curlett, Ellis Smith and Ciaran O'Donnell had drove HFH up field, Jonathon scored a cracker, stepping and swerving his way over the white wash.On the stoke of half time, acting half back Lewis Bates, took advantage of a huge gap out wide and he scooted from behind the play the ball to cross the line for a cracker of a try.At the start of the second half, Newton came out all guns blazing and as a result they crossed for their first try of the game. This is when the HFH team went through a "dodgy spell". They failed to complete three sets of six, by going into touch. Even though HFH was turning the ball over, they still managed to keep Newton out with more excellent defensive work from every single player.Harry Smith then steadied the ship. This followed good runs from Evan Purvis, Quinn Hughes and Alex Curlett from which Harry shot through a gap and then out-sprinted the covering defenders. On their last set, Newton crossed for an excellent try. Then HFH crossed the line to score the last try of the game. They had managed to get five metres from the try line with one tackle left. Will Tilleke who was acting half back scooted and went for the line. Will had to use all his strength and power to force his way over the line, taking what seemed the whole Newton team with him. This was an excellent game of U7's rugby, Well Done to all involved.

Portico v's Halton F H
HFH U7`s travelled to Portico on Sunday for their third meeting of the season. On the two previous encounter's HFH have come away with comfortable victories but today's game was a totally different story. In a game, which was very much defence orientated, Portico gave as good as they got and since the last meeting between these two sides, Portico have come on leaps and bounds.Travelling away with only 12 players, Sam Collinson was made captain for the day and won the toss, choosing to attack the Portico outfit from the start. On their first set, HFH made huge in roads up field with Callum Tollitt, Sam McParland, Jonathan Spruce and Richard Hartley doing the hard work. Ben Davies then steamed on to the ball to go over unopposed to score the first try of the game.HFH managed to hold Portico out for their first four sets with the ball, and outstanding in defence for HFH were Harry Smith, Thomas Craig, Quinn Hughes Sam Collinson and Callum Tollitt.Ben Davies crossed for his second try of the game after Ciaran O'Donnell, Jonathan Kirby and Nathan Gollins had made strong in roads against the Portico defensive line. Harry Smith then took the ball forward and as he came under pressure from the Portico tacklers, he off loaded to Ben Davies who, after searching for space out wide, straightened up to cross for a lovely try.
Portico then got themselves back into the game when they crashed over from a last tackle scoot. On their last set of the first half HFH scored again. This time it was Harry Smith who crossed the line after darting through a gap in the Portico defences, the gap having been created by Jonathan Spruce's quick thinking and playing the ball immediately.Portico stepped up the pressure in the second half and in doing so they forced HFH into making some mistakes with the ball. When Portico did get the ball in hand they crossed for two further tries making the score all square with one set each left.It was on Portico's last set that HFH's team work shone through. The HFH players worked so hard for one another, they managed to keep Portico out, Thomas Craig, Callum Tollitt, Sam Collinson, Sam McParland and Jonathan Spruce worked tirelessly. Knowing that they couldn't lose the game, the HFH team set about trying to win it. Richard Hartley, Nathan Gollins and Sam Collinson began the fight back by making good solid yards. Quinn Hughes then burst onto the ball; he stepped left evading a couple of defenders and then straightened up, sprinting half the length of the pitch to score the winning try.
What a finish; what a game!

Wigan St Patricks v's Halton F H
HFH played their last official fixture of the current season away to Wigan St Pat's, With no fixtures remaining, only next week's mini festival at Blackbrook remains on the HFH U7's schedule.Today's trip to Wigan St Pats showed just how far the HFH U7`s side have come since the start of the season. The enthusiasm of the players when in possession of the ball attacking was tremendous. But that of the players in a defensive role surpassed this. It was a delight to witness in this game; with the players doing all that was asked of them.Wigan St Pat's contributed to a great game as they caused the HFH defensive line a lot of problems early on in the game and they should take heart from their concerted efforts.Today's performance was virtually mistake free, with only one risky off-load forcing a knock-on. More pleasing from the coaches' point of view was that not one HFH player went into touch. In attack B en Davies, Jamie Grimes, Will Tilleke, Thomas Craig and Evan Purvis caused the Wigan St Pat's side all sort's of problem's by running hard and by running straight. After conceding an early score HFH soon got their act together in defence. They worked really hard for the cause and this was typified by the performances of Jonathan Spruce, Nathan Black, Ciaran O'Donnell, Lewis Bates and Kane Fletcher. Both Jayden Hatton and Harry Smith scored hat tricks today for HFH and not for the first time this season they got into double figures when defending. All coaches and parent's agree that ALL the HFH U7`s players deserve a huge `Well Done` for today's performance and effort.

24 Sept 06
Halton F H v's Langworthy Reds
Halton Farnworth Hornets under 10's continued their excellent early season form with a rain soaked display at Wilmere Lane running out worthy winners at 24 points to 16.In the first half HFH literally soaked up the pressure playing up hill and with a torrential downpour, their fantastic defence and determination saw a level score of 12 points to 12, with Jack Connor, Michael Parsons and Adam Kirby all scoring tries. In the second half and heading down hill, excellent field position was gained by the forward pack headed by Jack White, Tom Johnson & Stephen Fenney in the front row. They were ably supported by second rows Isaac Riley and Sam Horabin. The good work of the forwards allowed the attacking back line of Adam Gallagher, Curtis Stanley, Michael Parsons and versatile player Jack Mason, to really show their paces. But it was `Man-of-the-Match` player Adam Kirby who capitalised on the conditions and scored a second half hat trick of tries to bring his total tally for the game to four.During the second half period the HFH U10's defence was fantastic and several players could have been awarded `Top Tackler`. Unfortunately the award can only go to one player and due to his excellent cover defence and improving technique, Curtis Stanley was given this award. The `Coaches` award went to Jack Connor for his all round game, playing pivotal roles in both defence and attack. The `Top Trainer` award went to Jack Mason for his superb organising ability and work ethic.

Crosfields v's Halton F H
Halton Farnworth Hornets U10`s travelled to Crossfields in the knowledge that their opponents have provided stiff opposition in previous seasons and it would take a good performance to achieve a result. So the teamwork shown by the U10`s to record a twenty points to ten points victory was superb. The first half was played at a hectic pace with no quarter given by either team and defences on top until Adam Kirby made a defence splitting run just inside his own half and out pacing The Crossfields defence to score the first of his quadruple of tries. This try was followed by a sustained period of pressure from Crossfields who used the sun and high kicks to attack the Hornets line. Excellent field position by Rhys Fletcher, Curtis Stanley and Adam Gallagher thwarted these attacks. This allowed the forward line of Stephen Fenney, Tom Johnson and Jack Mason to make inroads into the Crossfields territory all three taking multiple tacklers to stop their progress.Sam Horabin, Zac Riley and Jack Connor all tormented the Crossfields defence and with Crossfields tiring, Hornets scored a second try to make the score line read ten points to nil. In the dying minutes of the first half Michael Parsons pulled off a try saving ankle tap tackle, which caused the Crossfields winger to lose the ball with the Hornets line open. The second half started with a try for Crossfields number ten who had an outstanding game for the opposition. But this just made the Hornets raise their game and they started playing some superb rugby. Planned moves involving several team members punched holes in the Crossfields defence and followed probing runs by Zac Riley and Stephen Fenney. Adam Kirby scored his third try from twenty metres. The Hornets then saved their best rugby for last stages. The use of both run-arounds and drop-offs left Jack Connor in an attacking field position and with strength and awareness, he held off two tacklers and slipped a great pass to the ever supporting Adam Kirby who crossed the line for his fourth and Hornets final try. As the final whistle was about to blow a consolation try was scored by Crossfields. The measure of this being a team performance saw `Top Trainer Award` going to Michael Parsons for his consistency in training. The `Coaches Award` went to Adam Gallagher for his good work in defence and attack. The `Top Tackler Award` went to Zac Riley who made some excellent cover tackles. Finally, the `Man-of-The-Match` award went to Sam Horabin who had an all round excellent game.In truth every Hornets player could have received an award for this performance.

Halton F H v's Blackbrook
The HFH U10's suffered their first loss of the season against a well-drilled and disciplined Blackbrook side. Tries by Sam Horabin and Adam Kirby made little difference to Blackbrook who swiftly moved the ball in order to spread the Hornets defence.Hornets began the game well, with positive running by the front row of Stephen Fenney, Tom Johnson and Jack White. Supported by Adam Gallagher and Zac Riley, the Hornets made some progress in the centre of the field, but a very quick Blackbrook defensive line frustrated the efforts of Jack Connor, Jack Mason and scrum half Rhys Fletcher who were unable to spread the ball to the wide players Curtis Stanley and Michael Parsons.Although Hornets defended well for long periods, quick movement around the ruck and good support play allowed the opposition to score unanswered tries and effectively wrap up the game. The `Man-of-the - Match` award went to Jack White.
The `Top Tackler Award` went to Tom Johnson.
The `Coaches Award` went to Rhys Fletcher.
The 'Top Trainer' Award went to Stephen Fenney.

Culcheth v's Halton F H
HFH U10`s got back to wining ways at the weekend against an up and coming Culcheth side.Breaks from Jack Connor and Adam Kirby throughout the game resulted in the majority of the Hornets tries being scored out wide.As the game progressed, a more structured approach around the play the ball from Rhys Fletcher brought forwards Tom Johnson, Stephen Fenney and Jack White into the game, strengthening the offensive line and allowing the Hornets to gain valuable yards in the centre of the park. This gave Zac Riley, Jack Mason, Adam Gallagher and Sam Horabin a number of chances to spot holes and make effective breaks.Culcheth played their part throughout, with good structured rugby, keeping in touching distance by using their forwards to good effect. Attempts to kick for field position or move the ball to the wings were prevented by some spirited defensive work by try scorer Michael Parsons and Curtis Stanley.Late in the game, a well worked try, resulting from good support play and an unselfish pass, allowed Hornets to finish the move and effectively end any hopes of a Culcheth fight back. The `Man-of-the - Match` award went to Jack Connor.
The `Top Tackler Award` went to Adam Kirby.
The `Coaches Award` went to Michael Parsons.
The `Top Trainer` Award went to Zac Riley.

Wigan St Patricks v's Halton F H
A trip up the M6 to the home of Wigan St Pats was not a relishing prospect for a late morning Sunday Kick Off!With no subs available but the novelty of a qualified referee, Hornets lined up against a team who looked the bigger and stronger side. However from the KO, it was the Hornets side that were quicker out of the blocks and attacked the St Pats defence with aggression, structure and an improved team belief.Tom Johnson, Stephen Fenney and Jack White led the forward line, with aggression in attack and defence, and with some individual agility normally only displayed by the lighter backs. With a deeper attacking line, Zac Riley, Adam Gallagher, Sam Horabin and Adam Kirby were able to make breaks out wide and with great handling it wasn't long before Hornets took an early lead.Occasional breaks in concentration allowed St Pats to respond each time the Hornets scored. This was end-to-end entertainment and both teams could have extended their leads if not for some individual defensive work.Michael Parsons and Curtis Stanley worked hard and supported well on the wings with Jack Mason & Jack Connor providing agility and direction from around the play the ball.Over all, this was a much improved team performance, against a well-established club. This was a game that Hornets could and probably should have won, although from a neutral view a draw was without doubt a fair result.Individual awards MOM went to Tom Johnson for excellent work leading the defensive line, Top Tackler went to Jack Connor for some superlative cover tackles, Coaches Award went to Stephen Fenney for a sound all round game with Top Trainer going to Curtis Stanley.Well Done Hornets - KEEP IT UP!
The `Man-of-the - Match` award went to Tom Johnson.

Halton F H v's Wigan St Pats
A twelve man HFH U13's side opened their NWC premier division campaign with a fine win at Wilmere Lane.In a scoreless first half the HFH U13's faced a continuous onslaught from Wigan St Patricks who capitalized on a succession of penalties awarded by the referee. The HFH U13's didn't help their cause by turning over the ball to their opponents far too easily and this included an extremely poor kicking game. However, a tremendous defensive lead by 'Coaches Award' winner Alex Clare, kept the visitors at bay.At the turn around Wigan St Patricks opened their account after a HFH error from the kick-off, which allowed St Pats to score an unconverted try. This sparked the HHF U13's into life and Alex Clare scooted over for a try following a great kick from Mark Percival, which was fumbled by the St Wigan St Patricks full back close to his own line. Mark Percival added the extras. The HFH U13's added to their tally when 'Man-of-the-Match', Lewis Whitty stole the ball and romped 40 metres despite the attention of several would be tacklers, to score a great try. Percival was again successful with the conversion.HFH took control of the game as Wigan St Patricks started to give away penalties.Debutant Ryan O'Brien put up a great bomb which caused panic in the Wigan St Patricks ranks and Andrew Wainright pounced on the ball to score out wide.Wigan St Patricks never gave up the game and scored a converted try with only two minutes of playing time remaining. For the crowd, this created a nail biting finish to a really exciting game. The 'Man-of-the-Match' award went to Lewis Whitty with the 'Coaches Award' going to Alex Clare.

Portico v's Halton F H
Halton Farnworth Hornets U13's turned out with just 12 players for the second week in succession. This time the HFH team had to travel to last seasons Lancashire Cup winning side Portico Vine and the hosts were determined to avenge the two defeats at the hands of the Hornets last season.Portico started strongly penning the Hornets in their own half and after an unforced error they scored a converted try after two minutes. In a tough encounter both sides strove to take control with the Hornets slightly gaining the upper hand. After a series of knock-ons from both sides, Alex Clare scored an unconverted try to take the half-time score to 06-04.In the second period Portico added to their total despite a heroic Hornets defensive effort.A cross field kick caught the Hornets out wide and then a bomb, which looked to have been grounded by a Hornets defender, produced two tries as the extra man eventually told.In the closing minutes Porticos massive prop forced his way over to stem any hopes of a Hornets comeback.Notable displays came from Lewis Whitty and Lewis Hulme. The 'Man-of-the-Match' award went to Jack Buck with the 'Coaches Award' going to Ryan O'Brien. 'Top Tackler' went to Alex Clare.

Halton F H v's Ince Rose Bridge
HFH got back to winning ways on Sunday with a solid performance against a much-fancied Ince Rosebridge side.HFH started well and took the game to Rosebridge. The early pressure told on seven minutes with Jack Owens crossing for the first try. Mark Percival added the extras. The Hornets tackling was forcing Rosebridge into error after error and from one such situation, Lewis Whitty took advantage and romped in from 40 metres after ten minutes. Mark Percival kicked the conversion.Lewis Whitty then scored his second try. This again was on the left of the field and Mark Percival was spot-on with his kicking to claim the two points.Andrew Wainwright wrapped up the first half in style. He cantered in after good hands down the line found him out wide and he scored for HFH.The Hornets produced the try of the match five minutes after the restart. Great tackling again forced Rosebridge to 'cough-up' the ball. With HFH now in possession, the ball was flashed along the line to Mark Percival. He could see that Jack Owens was racing forward and so he popped the ball into his arms. Jack Owens sliced through the Rosebridge defence from the halfway line. With Mark Percival supporting brilliantly on the inside, he took the return pass off Jack Owens and then dove over the try line.Ten minutes later, good hands from Ste Ball and Andrew Wainwright found the rampaging Lewis Whitty who crossed the line to register his hat trick of tries. Mark Percival was successful with the conversion.A forward pass close to the Hornets line gifted the 'Wiganers' a score as the hard working Ince Rosebridge prop barged his way over from close range. The conversion was unsuccessful. The Hornets however responded straight from the restart when Rosebridge fumbled a low kick and again HFH regained possession. In the next attack Andrew Wainwright scored his second try. This was a great all round performance from all the players of the HFH U13's.The 'Man-of-the-Match' award went to Lewis Whitty with the 'Coaches Award' going to Alex Clare.

Blackbrook v's Halton F H
On paper HFH looked capable of extracting revenge for the two defeats received at the hands of Blackbrook last season. But in a game littered with Hornets errors it was the Brook who took the spoils yet again.Right from the first whistle, HFH were penalised for failing to kick ten metres. This became the pattern of the game and it allowed Blackbrook to dominate territory and pound the Hornets line.Despite all the home sides efforts the Hornets defence conceded only one try and a penalty kick in the first half and on a rare visit in the Blackbrook half came up with a try of their own through Lewis Hulme. This took the score to 06 - 04.The second half began with more pressure from Blackbrook and despite the valiant efforts of the Hornets defence with `Man-of-The-Match` Alex Clare outstanding, Blackbrook added another unconverted try to their tally, ironically from a mistake of their own!Andrew Wainwright was unlucky to be penalised for a double movement that could have leveled the scores. It was Blackbrook however who took the victory after their huge prop rampaged 60 metres through some weak tackling to score the clincher.Debutante Dom Speakman took the `Coaches Award` with an impressive performance.

Wigan St Cuthberts v's Halton F H
After a weeks rest HFH traveled to unbeaten Wigan Saint Cuthbert's looking to get back to winning ways.Playing down the slope, HFH opened the game with some terrific defensive work containing some massive hits, which restricted the home side and knocked them completely off their game. The HFH attack took full advantage of this.A combination of Jack Buck & Dom Speakman found Andrew Wainwright who stormed over the line out wide. The conversion attempt was missed.Dom Speakman was involved in the next score with a clever ball steal that resulted in an unconverted try for Alex Clare. Half backs Lewis Hulme and Mark Percival built on the platform set by the forwards which resulted in good back line play and two further tries both from Jack Owens, with one try converted. With the half coming to a close and the Cuthbert's in disarray from the constant Hornets pressure, Ste Ball fooled the markers and scooted over from acting half back to make the score line 00 - 22 at half time. The second period began with WSC exerting the pressure and testing the Hornets defence at every opportunity. Poor finishing at times let WSC down. HFH however stuck to the task admirably conceding only the one try with 8 minutes to go.Lewis Whitty provided the HFH highlight with a breathtaking curved run from the base of the scrum before scorching 80 metres up the left wing, the final pass just going astray. This was a fantastic team performance from the whole HFH team with Jack Owens (Most Tackles), Alex Clare & Jack Buck (Coaches Award) and Dom Speakman (MOM) outstanding.

Halton F H v's Thatto Heath
HFH preserved their 100% home record with a nine-try romp over a brave but out-gunned Thatto Heath side. Highlights of the match were a hat trick of tries for the 'Coaches Award' winner Lewis Whitty and a workmanlike 'MOM' display from Ryan O'Brien.A penalty for offside gave the Hornets good field position from which Mark Percival took advantage, scooting over from close range on six minutes. Two minutes later Lewis Hulme worked an opening for Lewis Whitty to finish from 50 metres out. Dom Speakman was next to go over again from long range after a neat dummy.HFH were now well on top and after an Andrew Sheridan run down the left side of the pitch, the ball was quickly shifted down the line to George McDonnell who gleefully accepted to score out wide. Lewis Whitty scored his second after the Crusaders were caught offside, this time from 60 metres out giving HFH a 22 - 00 half-time cushion.A Thatto sin binning in the early exchanges of the second period didn't help their cause, however they didn't crack until 15 minutes in when George McGrogan stepped inside the cover defence to register a try.Lewis Whitty completed his hat trick from the unaccustomed position of winger before Mark Percival grabbed his second after a strong midfield break. Alex Clare increased the lead cutting inside several defenders after a Dean Ainsworth scoot. Then with one minute to go the Crusaders had the last shout when their stand off showing good evasive skills scored a great try from inside his own half.MOM - Ryan O'Brien. Coaches Award - Lewis Whitty.

Olham St Annes v's Halton F H
HFH stayed in touch with the leaders of the NWC U13's Premier Division with a comfortable win at Oldham St. Anne's.For the third week in succession HFH blew away the opposition in the first half coincidently with an interval lead of 22 - 00.The Hornets pressed early and were unlucky with two efforts from Andrew Sheridan and Lewis Whitty both going into touch close to Oldham's line. The pressure eventually told and excellent rugby produced the first two tries as good hands down the line found Jack Owens, then Ryan O'Brien with both tries getting converted by Mark Percival.A clever worked move resulted in a great try for Jack Buck after some terrific offloads from Alex Clare and Dean Ainsworth. HFH continued the onslaught when Dom Speakman put Ste Ball over to the left of the uprights with Percival adding the extra points.Oldham St. Anne's began the second period brightly as the Hornets lost their way slightly. However, Oldham Saint Anne's couldn't find a way through the HFH defensive line and with some big hits being made by the HFH players, the game swung back towards HFH.Coaches Award winner Alex Clare, showing another side to his game, excelled in attack and with another pinpoint pass, found Andrew Sheridan in space to finish out wide.Ryan O'Brien was next over from the play the ball crowning another consistent display as MOM. Then Mark Percival worked an opening for Jack Owens to claim his second before Oldham Saint Anne's scored the final try under the posts.MOM - Ryan O'Brien. Coaches Award - Alex Clare.

Halton F H v's Wigan St Judes
HFH played hosts to Wigan St Judes and completely dominated territory but for a brave defensive effort from the visitors, which kept the score line down. The Hornets scored only one try in the first half after a neat worked move saw Lewis Whitty romp over on nine minutes with Mark Percival adding the extras.Successive penalties for offside gave HFH great field position from which Whitty nearly scored again but St. Jude's defenses held firm. The visitors really struggled to get out of their own half and hardly threatening the home sides line. The second half was more of the same and the Hornets took nineteen minutes to break down a stubborn Wigan side when MOM Dom Speakman's cut out pass found Luke Jones who squeezed in at the corner. The conversion attempt was missed.Shortly after it was Luke Jones again. He found himself supporting a clever run from Lewis Hulme to take the final pass and drop over the line.MOM - Dom Speakman. Wigan St Pats v's Halton F H
The injury hit HFH U13's side traveled to Wigan with only twelve fit players to face Wigan St Patricks.Part way into the game, HFH was reduced to just eleven players when unfortunately George McDonnell had to leave the field injured. Despite this the Hornets put on their bravest performance of the season. The Pats played a flowing brand of rugby and were three tries to the good in the first 15 minutes. A massacre looked on the cards especially when the Pats went 20-0 up early in the second half.As the game progressed, it wasn't good news for the Hornets side as several players picked up injuries but struggled along. Battling on however, they took the game to Wigan and staged a remarkable fight back.First was Lewis Whitty who scored a four pointer from an Alex Clare kick ahead.Next it was Alex Clare who fooled the Wigan defensive line when he appeared to be shaping up to kick the ball but then a gap opened and over he crashed with Mark Percival adding the extras points. The home side started to panic as the remaining Hornets players came at them in both attack and defence to show tremendous character. All players deserve huge praise for this display and it was a difficult decision to pick the MOM and Coaches Award.MOM - Don Speakman. Coaches Award - Lewis Hulme.

HFH went joint top of the NWC U13's Premier Division with a convincing win over Wigan St. Judes.
HFH mastered the narrow pitch with a powerhouse display in both attack and defence scoring six tries without reply. Mark Percival converted his own try after Jack Buck put him under the sticks on ten minutes.Great defence lead to the next try three minutes later when Lewis Whitty collected a goal-line drop out more akin to a goalkeeper, regaining his feet and romping over from 35 metres, Percival added the extras. It was more effective defence, which forced another goal-line drop out, and Mark Percival took advantage to grab his second try, again adding the extras. In the second period it was Andy Wainwright who scooped up a loose ball to register another four points. Then Lewis Whitty added his second before he unselfishly turned provider to give Alex Clare the easiest of tries after being put through by Dom Speakman.Lewis Whitty deservedly won the Man Of the Match award, closely followed by Ryan O'Brien and Alex Clare.

North West Counties Cup Competition Final - staged at Golborne Parkside Sports & Community Club.
A magnificent 90-metre interception try by centre Andrew Sheridan was the sucker punch that knocked the stuffing out of Blackbrook's attempt of adding the prestigious North West Counties Cup to their Premier Division title. In a repeat of last years Final, it was sweet revenge for the Hornets after Brooks' narrow 06 - 04 win in 2006.In a tense first half period it was HFH who dominated proceedings playing Blackbrook in their own half. Right from the kick off it was the Hornets well-organised attack asking all the questions. Blackbrook answered with a defiant well-drilled defensive effort. After withstanding the Hornets pressure it was Blackbrook who took the lead with three minutes of the first half remaining. Andrew Sheridan's attempted intercept went to ground and from the resulting scrum a position was set up for the Brook prop to crash through and score close to the uprights. The conversion was successful. The Hornets were not fazed and carried their belief to amend the situation in the second half. On two minutes Dom Speakman dummied his way over on the left but the conversion attempt fell agonizingly short. With the score line reading 06 - 04 to Brook, was this to be Deja Vu? Not this time. The game was more evenly balanced with both sides playing attractive football in the quest for victory. With the result in the balance and only nine minutes to go, Blackbrook were pressing hard for the win against a resolute Hornets defence. An attack to the left looked promising but it was Sheridan's second gamble of the game that paid off for the Hornets. This time Sheridan went for the intercepted, cleanly taking the ball and racing the length of the field to score a magnificent try that had the Hornets supporters in raptures. Mark Percival converted to make the score line 10 - 06 and HFH were in front for the first time in the game. The Hornets were now in a buoyant mood as their self-belief began to pay dividends. Blackbrook knew they had a chance with only four points in it but it was the Hornets who pressed home their superiority. The impressive Andrew Wainwright, causing all kinds of problems for the Blackbrook defensive line, grabbed a brace of tries on the right, in the last five minutes. Jack Owens converted one to complete the triumph. On hearing the final whistle both players and supporters rejoiced in a well-earned victory.Coach Frank Ainsworth said, "The lads performance was outstanding and they showed just what they are capable of when they believe in themselves. We never talked about the Blackbrook try at half time, it was all positive, they knew what they had to do and they did it and finally exorcised the Blackbrook bogey - heroes everyone of them".

Halton F H v's Latchford Albion
This was the first match of the new season for HFH U14's, following last week's debacle and the forfeiting of the away game to Thatto Heath.Last season HFH beat Latchford Albion both home and away but it was evident that Latchford had improved tremendously throughout the summer break and acquired some new quality players. With HFH taking the first kick of the game to Latchford, it wasn't long before HFH had taken possession of the ball. Good driving from each of the forwards put HFH in the Latchford half. Taking his turn to run the ball in, Jack Williams was involved in a accidental banging of heads with one of the Latchford would be tacklers.
Receiving a nasty cut above his left eye, he was lead from the field with less than ten minutes gone. When play eventually restarted, HFH continued the pressure and the ever-strong running Mike O'Brien crossed the line in the corner. David Meadows was successful with the conversion off the touchline. Not to be out done, Latchford restated the game and soon took possession after an error by HFH. Their constant pressure-lead to a try that was unconverted. With both sides battling it out in the centre of the field, the half time whistle went with the score lines 06 -04.After the restart, and with possession coming their way, HFH were soon pressing the Latchford line. Good driving from Mike Bailey and co put HFH in a good position and efforts were soon rewarded when Ryan Gardam secured a try. The conversion was missed.Similar to the first half, HFH soon lost possession and Latchford lapped-up these mistakes by putting HFH under constant pressure. Now in the HFH half and carving a channel through the HFH defence, Latchford beat would be tackler after tackler to score a spectacular try under the sticks. Six points resulted from this effort to make the score line 10 - 12.Latchford were on the ascendancy thanks to poor tackling and handling errors by HFH and soon got back onto the HFH try line. Strong running by the under thirteen years of age forward (son of one of the Warrington Wolves players), who was built like the proverbial public convenience, resulted in a try to the left of the sticks. A successful conversion brought the score line to 10 - 16.Some how the HFH players took stock of the situation and lifted their game at this point, which resulted in a good attacking move. Coming to the end of the set of six, Mike Bailey kicked for touch, which put HFH deep into the Latchford half. With Latchford having the put-in, HFH some how won the ball from the resulting scrum. . With Mike Bailey, Johan Curzon, Phil Smith and Mike O'Brien pressing relentlessly against the Latchford line, Ryan Gardam broke the dead lock by crossing near the sticks. Dave Meadows made it six points with the kick and brought the score line to 16 - 18.The HFH players were now full of passion and the home crowd were sensing a fight back to victory. HFH must be given ten out ten for this late rally because they got straight back onto the Latchford line. There were several chances to pinch this one but the wrong pass, the wrong call and the wrong decision was made. The one golden opportunity to score came when HFH had two men out wide unmarked, unfortunately the Latchford defender was able to knock the would be pass to ground, resulting in a scrum down and the sounding of the final whistle. With the Latchford players elated and the HFH players disappointed the game was over with the score line reading 16 - 18.A mention must go to Kyle for his introduction and first performance for HFH in the second half of the game. He showed some strong attributes and skills. Once fully fit, his 'build' will surely result in a forward player of potential. The 'Man-of-the-Match' award went to Mike Bailey with the 'Best Tackler' also going to Mike Bailey. The 'Most Improved Player' went to David Meadows.

Leyland Warriors v's Halton F H
HFH U14's hit the road this Sunday, taking only fourteen players on their trek North to Leyland. The HFH out fit were always going to be against it with Leyland having a full compliment of seventeen players and, some big lads!Leyland started the game and HFH were soon pressurising the oppositio's line. Daniel Price put some neat cross-field kicks in but the defensive line stud firm. HFH crossed the line several times, only for the game to be restarted because the HFH player had been 'held-up'.Eventually, Leyland could withstand no more and a great bursting run from Mike O'Brien was off loaded to Pricey. He put a neat grubber kick in towards the posts which resulted in a try under the sticks from James Giblin. The conversion was missed.HFH continued where they had left off and charged the ball at the defensive line. Some good tackling resulted on HFH spilling the ball and losing position. This gave Leyland the impetus they had been seeking and after Jimmy Hilton and Mike Bailey got injured in a tackle (Josh Cassidy substituting Mike Bailey), the ball was slung across their line and they scored in the corner. The conversion was missed leaving it 04 - 04 a piece. At this point the HFH players had lost the plot. From the restart, the Leyland player took the first tackle in centre field. Running on strong was one of the Leyland big lads who carved his way through the HFH players as if they weren't there. From the Half way line, he scored under the posts with the conversion successful.Things got worse for HFH because Leyland came straight back and reached the HFH line. On the last tackle, they put in a cross-field kick, which wasn't field by HFH. It was a simple matter for the Leyland player to drop on the ball over the line. With the conversion missed and the half time whistle sounded, the score lines read 14 - 04 to Leyland.HFH took to the field with vigour and determination for the second half and with Mike Bailey, Phil Smith, Mick O'Brien and Johan Curzon running well, it was inevitable that another score for HFH would result from the constant pressure exerted. With possession turned over to Leyland on their own line, the HFH players tackled like Trojans and with Leyland going nowhere and on the second tackle, they dropped the ball. Mike O'Brien was first to respond. He picked the ball up and took several players with him as he crossed the line. James Giblin added the conversion to make it 14 - 10.With the HFH players now 'up for the game' it wasn't long before they reached the Leyland line again. On the last tackle, Pricey put in a blind backward overhead kick to the short side, which Jimmy Hilton latched onto and scored in the corner. Pricey was unfortunate with the touchline conversion attempt when he hit the post. This made the score line 14 - 14.Mike Bailey was at it again and made some great yardage to the half way line. Ste Shone, who was having a cracking game. Picked the ball up at this point, and ran through two players, on his way to the line and scored under the posts. James Giblin got the conversion to make it 14 - 20.With only five minutes remaining the game wasn' won and the HFH players tackled well to deter Leyland from scoring. When the final whistle went the HFH players were all elated, and so they should be!This was a performance to be proud of by ALL fourteen HFH players, each of whom played their part in this victory. They lost it towards the last five minutes of the first half but had the character to dig deep and find that cutting edge for the second half. Well done to all the players involved. The 'Man-of-the-match' award went to Ste Shone with the 'Best tackler' going to Mike Bailey. The 'Most improved player' went to James Giblin.

Woolston v's Halton F H
Halton Farnworth Hornets traveled to Warrington on Sunday knowing they were to face ex-premiership side Woolston Rovers. This was a side that had won their first opening three games of the season but who had lost the previous week to Chorley Panthers. Would HFH be on the receiving end of a Woolston back sting?Well the simple answer is yes.The HFH players didn`t help themselves in this particular battle. They lacked heart, commitment, honor and courage against a side that had some outstanding individual players on display. The lessons of the premiership matches the Woolston players had experienced were certainly dished out to the HFH players, none more so than in the tackle. Rough, tough slamming to terra firma, and just as the HFH player is going to ground, a bit of `roughing-up` and massaging of the face for good measure. It`s all part of the sport and it certainly worked for Woolston, who managed to put the HFH players off their game. The intensity of rugby to this degree is new to the HFH players, and they will have to get use to it! Toughen up is the order of the day.But this wasn`t the only problem. The tackling of the HFH players was as good as none existent. The full back for Woolston, who had speed, sharpness and ability, embarrassed the HFH team with his collection of six tries. Like a knife through butter, he cavorted through the HFH defenders with a smile on his face, and out paced any would be chases with the acceleration of a Porsche. So in the early stages of the match, the writing was ablaze across the skies that HFH were on a hiding to nothing. By half time, the score line was 28 - 06, courtesy of Pricey, who chipped the Woolston defensive line and beat the full back to the ball as it rolled over the try line. He also kicked the conversion. As the passage of time progressed, so did the desire of the HFH players for this one to come to an end. Woolston were running tries in from their own half and there was nothing the HFH players could or wanted to do about it.There were some individual performances that were pleasing to see, and in a more equally fairing game, would have stood out. Chris Brown made a good debut game for HFH, even after having to borrow some boots! Chris has been away form the HFH Club for a few years (left rugby) and only recently rejoined the lads. Unfortunately, straight after returning to the club, he fell ill and this was his first turn out. So well-done Chris. A welcome sight on the rugby pitch in both attack and defence considering his size.Mike Bailey and Mike O`Brien were again performing as forwards do, and a little bit more aggression (controlled) would have paid dividends.Jack Williams started to come into his own towards the games end and carried several Woolston would be tacklers on his back, as he progressed towards the Woolston try line, only to be eventually pulled down short. From the resulting play the ball, the rugby ball was flung across the line and landed in Phil Smith`s hands. He charged across the line to score wide out for HFH. The conversion was wide. With time of little consequence to the HFH players, Woolston racked up more points to the humiliation of the HFH team.Next week, HFH U14`s are in the Lancashire Cup First Round, away to Burtonwood. Lets hope they`ve learnt their lesson!

Burtonwood v's Halton F H
Halton Farnworth Hornets U14's had another difficult away game this Sunday, this time it was against Burtonwood Bulldogs in the First Round of the Lancashire Cup Competition.HFH, still without long term injury player Jordan Pennington and now Ryan Gardam (broken thumb last weekend), gave first game appearances to new players James Parle and Thomas Spencer. Also make his first appearance this season was the returning player to the HFH Club, Daniel Heymens.HFH kicked off and playing a team above them in the league structure (Premier), they opened the first fifteen minutes with enthusiasm. An unfortunate high tackle against HFH, right in front of the sticks, allowed the big Burtonwood players to burst the HFH defensive line to score under the posts. The conversion was successful. It wasn't long afterwards that Burtonwood were at it again. This time from a scrum on the half way line, fast hands allowed the winger to sprint in freely. The conversion was missed. In a similar situation but this time with HFH feeding the scrum, HFH were unable to collect the ball from the back of the scrum. This lead to Burtonwood pouncing on the loose ball and claiming it. The ball was then passed out wide for a score in the corner. Again, the conversion was missed. With Burtonwood retaining a lot of possession, HFH were left defending and soon afterwards some driving runs by the forwards gained important territory. The ball was then flung to the backs who in turn scored close to the wing. The conversion went over. There was no stopping Burtonwood and HFH heads were sinking. From the kick off, the ball went straight into the arms of the Burtonwood number 23 player. Running from the touchline and towards the centre of the field, he magically weaved his way through the HFH defenders, to score under the post unhindered. The conversion at this point made the score line read 26 - 00.With half time almost reached and HFH having possession, they found themselves close to the Burtonwood line. The forwards were driving forward and battering the defensive line but it was a long ball out from Pricey that broke the dead lock. Phil Smith was there to collect and dive over in the corner. With the conversion missed, the half time whistle sound with the score line now reading 26 - 04.In the second half the HFH players were more inspired. Pricey tried a bit of trickery and chipped over the defenders heads. Jordan Farrell collected and passed it to supporting player Mike O'Brien. Plenty of ground possession was gained and on the last tackle, Pricey put in a cross kick to the opposite corner flag. It collected cleanly by the well-positioned Burtonwood winger. With Burtonwood trying to clear the line, up popped Pricey to intercept a pass and score unchallenged. Dave Meadows kicked the conversion.
The game resumed and from the half way line, Pricey tried a cheeky chip over the Burtonwood line and gave chase. He gathered the ball up to see the full back approaching. Once again he kicked through and both players gave chase. Unfortunately, the ball ran dead. With the score line now 26 - 10, Burtonwood appeared to change tactics and utilized the might of the forward pack. Inside the HFH half, the Burtonwood pack pushed the HFH forwards backwards and with the ball in their possession and HFH at disarray, another score went on the board. The conversion under the sticks was missed. From the resultant restart, Pricey found touch, which put HFH back into an advantageous position. But that wasn't to be. Feeding the ball, the HFH pack were again driven backwards and the ball fell into opposition hands. It wasn't long before Burtonwood registered another score and made it six more points to their advantage. With the score line widening, credit must go to the HFH team for their continued participation in this cup match right to the end. This was highlighted none more than by Mike O'Brien, who from the half way line, demonstrated his strength and eagerness by 'charging' his way through the Burtonwood line. It was only some desperate tackling by Burtonwood that stopped him scoring.HFH were pounding the Burtonwood line when the final whistle was blown.Credit to HFH for the turnaround from last weeks none-performance. They can take a lot of positives from this game, having given last seasons Premier Runners Up a competitive game. Finally, the HFH players should be aware that the Burtonwood coach gave praised to the HFH team for its performance and was impressed by their attitude to the game.Further, the referee was complementary of both sides for making the match an easy one for him to conduct. He didn't encounter any problems, situations or likewise throughout the whole game. He found it a pleasure to referee such a tough, hard but clean game and consequently, he will be writing to BARLA to express his feelings. Well done to both sides.

Halton F H v's Ryland's Sharks
HFH U14`s played a home match after two previous weeks of travelling away, not that this made any difference to the final score!HFH held Rylands to a score line of 00 - 06 at the half time whistle but had little to offer in the form of attacks. To many chances went Rylands way all because of poor HFH tackling.Through and into the second half, the game was littered with stoppages for injuries to players from both sides. Rylands had four substitutes to call upon, while HFH had only one. With Josh Cassidy leaving the field with a broken nose, Thomas Spencer leaving the field for an injury to his elbow, James Parle limping around with a pulled hamstring and Phil Smith damaging his wrist, the HFH side was severely weakened.Still there were some decent individual performances like those of Mike Bailey and Mike O`Brien, who worked tirelessly in attack and defence. Ste Shone at centre, who made several good penetrating runs and breaks, while James Parle and Thomas Spencer also showed ability. With Rylands running in another two tries in the second half, there was little HFH could do to avoid the inevitable other than wait for the final whistle.

Halton F H v's Hindley
HFH U14`s returned to the turf this Sunday after a two week lay-off.The first week's lay-off was unplanned, unfortunate and had extreme exceptional circumstances beyond anybodies control. After a spate of injuries, illnesses and players committed to holidays it meant there were only nine bodies standing to be counted. But the second week's lay-off was planned as it captured Neil's absence for his family holidays. So Wilmere Lane provided the setting for the HFH U14's to try and reverse the bad patch of results recently experienced in NWC League Division One. Playing Hindley, who were sitting neatly in the middle of the league table, HFH U14's were able to get fifteen players together and therefore have the luxury of two substitutes.Even though the HFH U14's were still missing some regular players due to injuries and illness, plus players returning from injury, their performance was impeccable. In the first half, Hindley didn't even venture into the HFH half of the field since the HFH players went about their business in a workmanship like manner. Johan, on his return to the game after several weeks away due to injury, showed what his capabilities were. He'd have scored a long-range try but for his missing energy towards the end of a blistering run - his illness having affected his staying power. But he wasn't to be out done. A shorter range run, following a beautiful pass from Pricey, allowed Johan to cross the line in the corner. Pricey was unfortunate with the conversion. There were several opportunities to score which went missing and others whereby the Hindley defenders excelled in their cover tacking. One of these indents occurred after some good across the field ball passing by HFH resulted in Thomas Spencer receiving the ball. Pacing towards the try line he got the ball down over the line but was adjudged to have trailed his foot into touch. And so the first half ended with HFH camped in the Hindley half and the score line reading 04 - 00.The second half started in a similar vein for the HFH team, with possession going their way.Unfortunately HFH were unable to convert some decent play into points and when they hit the "10 minutes to go" mark, everything changed.Hindley found new inspiration and scored a try to the left of the sticks. The conversion was missed. Their second try came after some dogged but tiring tackling by the HFH defenders, had left a huge gap for the Hindley forward to stroll in under the sticks. The conversion was successful. The third try was a sweat one for Hindley but an embarrassment for the HFH side. With tails firmly in the air, Hindley's tall forward got a grip of the ball and ran a straight line through the HFH players from his own half, without a finger been laid on him!The conversion was missed, the whistle was blown and HFH have to wait until next week to try and reverse this poor show of form.

Chorley Panthers v's Halton F H
HFH U14`s hauled themselves up the M6 for their away game to Chorley Panthers, the first time they`d played them this season. With Chorley flying high at the top of the NWC League Division One, and HFH having a somewhat reflective season at the opposite end, the odds were certainly stacked against the travelling side.In the opening salvo, the HFH players gave as much as they took and against expectations, the game certainly looked closer than the league table positions would have people believe. The HFH tackling, a failing on many another game, was boosted by some individual performances, particularly by Ste Shone and Chris Brown. Nonetheless, there was still too much `pussy footing` about in the tackling department with very little commitment to tackle `round the legs`.The Chorley pack was a big size and going high can only result in one dilemma. Consequently, the HFH side tugged and pulled at jerseys in an effort to get the attacker onto the ground.Mike Bailey did pull the attackers leg off the ground as other HFH players struggled on, thus causing a loss of balance and for the Chorley player to fall to ground.Kyle R Nickle, after been brought on for the injured Daniel Heymans, did it a different way - he just stood his ground. When the big Chorley forward exploded towards Kyle, something had to give. Unfortunately for the Chorley player, and fortunately for Kyle, it wasn`t him. The Chorley player slowly struggled to his feet to play the ball and then had to leave the field to regain his whereabouts.Chorley scored their first try after some sustained pressure in the HFH half, with HFH leaving a huge uncovered gap out wide. With only seconds to go before halftime, Chorley were positioned on the HFH 22 metre line and on their last tackle. The ball was chipped over the HFH defensive line and landed on the try line under the sticks. The muddy conditions gave the ball little chance of going dead and it laid waiting for the next piece of action. With two HFH nearest to the scene, it should have been a no contest and the HFH team should have been lining up for a drop out. But haste and necessity abandoned HFH and up popped a Chorley player to make it an easy six points. The whistle sounded straight after the conversion with the score line showing 12 - 00.Several times in the second half HFH penetrated the Chorley defence but failed to convert work, energy and effort into points.Mike O`Brien made some determined runs and brushed aside the efforts of the first tacklers. In defence he worked harder and determination was brushed across his forehead as he went into the tackles.Ryan Gardam once again tried hard but the heaviness of the pitch didn`t help him or the other HFH players. The Chorley players - well they must be used to those conditions!Chorley scored another three tries in the second half with two of them a repetition of the first half try. Committing HFH tacklers, keeping the ball alive and slinging it across the field to the wing, seemed to hit the jackpot for them. The third try came about from a pressuring run by the Chorley `big lad`, who simply fell across the line.So the score line finished 24 - 00 but could have been more but for Jordan Holland`s tackle on an inevitable try scoring Chorley player as he dove towards the line. Jordan`s determination and technique in the tackle forced the Chorley player to knock-on.Aidan Morris, Josh Cassidy and James Giblin all got on the pitch as replacements for some tiring HFH players. The `Man-of-the-Match` award went to Mike O`Brien with the `Best ` Tackler` going to Ste Shone. The `Most Improved Player` went to Chris Brown.

Halton F H v's Thatto Heath Crusaders
HFH U14`s entertained near neighbours Thatto Heath Crusaders this weekend with a victory still something to hope for. With the ex Premier Division side coming to Wilmere Lane they were surely going to prove a big challenge for the still enthusiastic HFH players. But what a performance from all the HFH players!Thomas Spencer was demonstrating his skills both in attack and defence. His basic concept of `tackling around the legs` proved to be effective and showed the way for the other HFH players, who still have difficulty bending their backs. With James Parle switched to the hooking role, both new players are starting to show what they are capable of.As with all games the HFH U14`s have played, they make a tremendous initial start and then begin to let their heads drop when the opposition scores the first points. This was a different game! With HFH on the attack, the players found themselves pressurising the Thatto line and ten metres from the touchline. With Parley quickly getting the `play the ball` away to Pricey, everybody watched as Pricey dummied to pass towards the narrow side. A quick reversal saw Pricey switch to the open side were Jack Williams was `tanking` forwards. Taking the ball at pace, Jack`s strength took him towards and over the line, with three Thatto players glued to his body. Pricey got the conversion. As has happened on many an occasion, the lack of talking to each other to encourage, applaud and work as a team has lead to silly tries being scored against them. This was evident when, from a kick on the sixth, the ball went to the Thatto fullback. Taking the ball in his own 22, he was able to breach the HFH defensive line simply by picking his gap(s). He would have scored had it not been for Tom Spencer who chassed back to tackle him just short of the line. With Thatto support there quickly, it was only a matter of a Thatto forward to drive the ball over the line and score. The conversion was missed.HFH maintained the pressure on Thatto and at one point were given a scrum just in their own half. Ryan Gardam picked the ball up from his loose forward position and began his masterly attack. Running hard and weaving in and out of the would-be tackles, his determination to score wasn?t going to let him down. So score he did and it was well worth all the effort. Pricey got the conversion.Half time score was HFH 12 - 04 Thatto Heath.Second half and Thatto began to realise the situation they were in but this didn`t stop the HFH players from carrying on from the first half.Ste Shone had some good runs and on one of them, was able to get the ball to Chris Brown who just got caught by the tails of his shirt.Mike Bailey, who was playing his normal and committed game, was held up over the Thatto line - something, which he stated after the game, was not the case. With Thatto making some penetrating runs, especially from their number thirteen, it was a matter of time before they would score. And score they did but the conversion went wide. With the score line reading 12 - 14, the tension was sky high, and that was just amongst the spectators.Thatto had theirs tails up now and could smell a victory, which no doubt they thought they would have anyway and not encounter a robust, tough and determined opposition. It was Thatto who maintained the upper hand when another penetrating and speedy run was engineered down the HFH wing by the loose forward. It was unfortunate for HFH that Chris Brown, who`s wing it was, lay injured on the ground and was unnoticed by the referee. It was James Hilton who pulled the Thatto player down just short of the line but like the first half try, a quick play the ball onto a pounding forward player was all that was required for him to fall over the line and collect the points. The conversion was missed. With HFH players bewildered by the change of events, Thatto seized the opportunity to score again. Putting a high cross-field kick towards the corner, it was collected by the Thatto winger who scored. Again the conversion was missed.Time was up for the HFH players but they didn`t know that, especially Mike O`Brien. Taking the ball from the half way line he charged forward brushing aside would be tacklers. His devastating run took him right to the Thatto line only to be tackled short. With Thatto players deliberately spoiling the play by playing offside, the referee had to speak to the Thatto players several times and award two free kicks. When normal play was resumed, HFH in the form of Mike O`Brien scored in the corner. It was a tough task for change of kicker Mike Bailey to kick this one and make a fair result of eighteen points apiece as the final outcome. Unfortunately the high winds were blowing against the line of the kick and the conversion was missed. The final whistle was then blown with the score line reading 16 - 18.All spectators commented on what a tremendous game of amateur rugby league they had watched with the entertainment value absolutely thrilling right to the very end.Every single HFH can take pride from this performance. It was a vast improvement on previous games and shows what potential lays within the team. Tightening up on the tackling, especially round the legs, toughing up of match day temperaments, competitiveness and a definite rugby league instinct, are all qualities, which every player needs to work at.Josh Cassidy, Kyle Nickle, Daniel Clegg and James Giblin all got on the pitch as Neil Meadows made his selective and injury enforced replacements. The `Man-of-the-Match` award went to Tom Spencer with the `Best Tackler` going to Mike Bailey. The `Most Improved Player` went to James Parle.

Halton F H v's Leyland Warriors
HFH U14`s entertained Leyland Warriors at Wilmere Lane, the only team the HFH U14`s have beaten this season, so this was always going to be a close one.Leyland started the game with a strong wind behind them and within the first set of six, HFH had knocked on and handed possession to Leyland. Some early aggressive tackling kept Leyland at bay and from a scrum down in the HFH 20 metre area HFH won the ball. With James Parle going blind, he drew the Leyland centre and winger, then through out a beautiful pass to Chris Brown on the wing. Chris evaded some covering defensive players, to cut inside and score under the posts. Dave Meadows kicked the conversion. From the restart, Johan Curzon, who was returning from several weeks illness, drove the ball up to the half way line. Pressurising the Leyland defence, HFH continued to drive the ball at the Leyland players.Tackling is just one bone of contention as far as the HFH players are concerned. Their lack of aggression and determination this season has accumulated in some disappointing results. This game was to be no different. With Leyland taking possession of the ball, it landed in the hands of their big number 13 player. From the half way line, he tore through the HFH line as though it wasn`t there and scored a fine solo try under the posts. With the conversion successful, the score line now read 06 - 06.With Leyland gaining confidence, it wasn`t long before some dreadful tackling resulted in Leyland scoring again in the corner. The conversion went over.Almost immediately from the restart, Leyland had broke the HFH defence line again but this time some good defensive stopped them just short of the HFH line. This was short lived and Leyland fell across the line to score but missed the conversion.Approaching half time, Tom Spencer latched onto a pass and out paced several Leyland players, as he tracked along the touchline towards the Leyland corner. Unfortunately, the cover defence from the Leyland number 13 thwarted Tom`s chances of scoring, as he was humbled into touch. At half time the score line read 06 - 16.The start of the second half wasn`t promising for HFH. The Leyland big number 13 once again must have thought Christmas had come early for him. Taking the ball up from the half way line, he severed through the HFH defenders to score unopposed right under the sticks. With the kick the score line changed to 06 - 22 and Leyland on top.Yet HFH had a more promising second half. Pricey, who had had a lack lustre first half, began to start playing. This encouraged the other HFH players and performance wise, it was a somewhat better commitment.Had just some of the players adopted the frame of mind of Jimmy Hilton, things may have been different. With a Leyland player once again breaching the HFH defensive line, he galloped in the direction of the HFH line. But Jimmy Hilton was there and he made a block bustering tackle. Aggressively taking the man to ground, the power of the tack resulted in the Leyland player spilling the ball and HFH getting the put in at the resulting scrum. With Pricey now awake, he decided to have ago. He took the ball from the HFH half and bobbed and weaved his way through the Leyland players, to then sprint for the corner flag. Out pacing the covering defence he scored in the corner. From right on the touchline, Ryan Gardam got a beautiful conversion to make the score line 12 - 22.This really inspired the HFH team and they started to put everything into it but it was to late and the whistled sounded for full time.A tough battle it was and yet again, the poor tackling of HFH was their down fall. The spirit is there, the camaraderie is there but what they individually need to find is that aggressive, toughing attitude, which is somewhere inside each of them!

Saddleworth Rangers v's Halton F H
HORNETS TAKE THE REINS.
HFH U14`s got back into the swing of things this weekend with a trip to Saddleworth Rangers. Following a dismal 2006, a trip away to Saddleworth wasn`t the best medicine they could have been administered to help provide a long time coming victory and lift them off the bottom of Division One.The away trip wasn`t helped by the fact that the squad was depleted by numbers and only travelled with one substitute. The HFH U14`s team arrived to find out that the Saddleworth team had been warming-up since 10:00am, and they had five substitutes. So HFH U14`s took to the field for their five-minute warm-up, prior to the 10:30am kick off. From the outset, the HFH U14`s performed like demons and produced attack after attack with great running drives by the pack in particular Mike O`Brien, Ryan Gardam and Mike Bailey. But the defence work of Saddleworth kept the HFH U14`s at bay - for a period anyway! From a penalty tap fifteen metres from the Saddleworth line, Ryan Gardam steam rollered onto the tapped ball and powered his way across the line. The conversion was missed. The Halton F H tackling showed a tremendous improvement from games played in 2006 and this showed itself when the team kept Saddleworth pinned for a hard set of six tackles. Unfortunately, HFH U14`s were penalised on the sixth for a high tackle. This allowed Saddleworth to kick territorial ground and plant them five metres from the HFH line. But once again, the HFH U14 players maintained their determination to hold out and put in some strong physical tackles. They were able to do this for five tackles and then on the sixth, Saddleworth put in a cross-field kick, which trailed across the HFH try line.Unfortunately, Chris Brown slipped as he changed direction and he was beaten to the ball by the Saddleworth winger. The conversion was good from the touchline to make the half time score 06 - 04.The second half was an exact repetition of the first half with HFH dominating the game.Danny Price, who was only declared fit on the Saturday after a week`s illness, put in a lovely chip kick over the Saddleworth defensive line. Jordan Pennington, returning for his first game after many, many months out of the game due to injury, was reading Pricey`s intentions. Consequently Jordan reacted first to the chip kick and gave chase, and was able to catch the ball on the full. There was no stopping Jordan as he flew straight towards the Saddleworth line and score under the posts. Dave Meadows was successful with the conversion.HFH couldn`t stop attacking and this probably created a sense of complacency as a very long pass was thrown out by HFH. This was a turning point in the game because the Saddleworth winger latched onto the air bound rugby ball and started sprinting towards the HFH try line.He gained sixty metres before good defensive cover by David Meadows and Ryan Gardam, brought the winger to ground. With Saddleworth on the ascendancy and the HFH players missing a few tackles after ploughing back from their attacking position, Saddleworth scored out wide. The conversion from the touchline hit the post and went over. This made the score 12 - 10.With only four minutes to go the coach, Neil Meadows, had a few intervening words with a couple of the players since he could see HFH had dominated the game and he didn`t want them to lose. From the restart, the HFH players put pressure on the Saddleworth team and were rewarded when they regained possession. The HFH forwards did their work and punctured gaps in the Saddleworth defensive line. This allowed Pricey to operate "pressure free" and when he was given the ball, he put a neat chip kick to the corner flag. David Meadows was on hand to dive full length and ground the ball for a fine try. The touchline conversion was missed. On the restart, Saddleworth tried a short restart but this didn`t travel the full ten metres so HFH were awarded a free kick. Sticking the ball up their jerseys, the HFH forwards played down the final thirty seconds before the whistle was sounded the end of the game. This was a much needed win for the HFH players and their fantastic gritty performance will surely instil some much need confidence into the whole squad. Their efforts deserved a reward and what better way than a victory and the collection of FOUR points.Man of The Match was given to Ryan Gardam. No other trophies were awarded because each and ever player gave an excellent performance.Well Done Boys!

Ryland Sharks v's Halton F H
HFH U14`s have had a rough season this season with only a couple of wins and as a consequence they were firmly fixed to the bottom of Division One. Last weeks victory, only their second all season, gained them four valuable points, which moved them off the bottom and to fourth place from bottom. This week they were to face Rylands away - a daunting task.Rylands had had the opposite season to HFH and were proudly positioned second from top of Division One, so today's game would indeed be challenging for the HFH U14`s players. With a big crowd watching, HFH kicked off the game but what the spectators didn't envisage, especially the Ryland supporters, was a competitive game of amateur rugby league that had everybody shouting.Rylands had taken to the pitch with a side that consisted of some big, strong lads and from the look of them you could see why they were at the top of the division.Unfortunately for Rylands, the HFH team put in their best performance so far this season and they tackled relentlessly, so much so that up to 28 minutes of play, they had not missed one single tackle. That in its self is some improvement for the team. With Ryan Gardam promoted to Captain, he led by example both in attack and defence. In fact the whole pack throughout played some tremendous rugby with Mike O'Brien charging close to the line, along with Johan Curzon and Jack Williams. Most of the first half was spent in the Ryland half of the pitch particularly near to the try line. With Rylands defending really well, Pricey, on several occasions, put in a variety of kicks and HFH were unlucky not to get on the end of at least one of them.It took Rylands 25 minutes to step into the HFH half but a good strong tackle by Jordan Holland caused the opposition player to knock-on. Mike O'Brien put in a storming run as he pattered his way through the Ryland players and this set-up a great attacking platform for the team. On the sixth, Pricey put a punchy kick diagonally across the field and found touch right in the Rylands corner.Rylands took possession and some good interchange of passing relieved the pressure on their line. The Ryland players started to put their foot on the gas and mounted a good attack on the HFH defenders. With the ball kept alive, Rylands tried the pass that would have possibly resulted in a try but up popped little Pricey who plucked the ball out of the air and scooted away.He made good ground until tackled by the fullback. From the play the ball, Mike O'Brien gave it his all to get the HFH team right up to the line. But yet again, the defence was strong and it came to the last tackle. With the ball in his hands it was Pricey's call; what would he do, another variety of kick? He astonished everyone when he neatly put over a drop kick and started running back towards the half way line before the ball had winged its way over the cross bar. From the restart, James Parle put in a great run and his overall game showed a great improvement. With HFH in the attacking mode once again, the half time whistle was sounded, with a score line of 00 - 01.For the second half, Neil Meadows interchanged Josh Cassidy for Daniel Clegg, with Josh having had a great first half and another player to show a vast improvement in his game. With Rylands having the wind to their backs the HFHJ was expecting a different encounter but the crowed were treated to another great contest with thrills and spills! Parly put another great run in and was able to flick the ball out to Thomas Spencer. Without a second thought, Tom began to weave his way through the Ryland defenders. Even when he had players hanging from his legs, he continued to power forward, with his mind set on determination. Like Parly and Josh, Tom showed what he's capable of doing on the rugby field.HFH had Jimmy Hilton at full back and Jimmy played a good game, catching the high balls from Ryland kicks and linking up in the HFH attacks. He would have had to undertake one of the best tackles of his life if the Rylands big fellow had been allowed to run through a gap in the HFH defensive line. That is, until Pricey got involved. With the big fellows busting through and the little fellow (Pricey) sliding across, Pricey jumped up at the Ryland player's arms and grabbed the ball. He defused the situation and regained possession for the HFH team.Jordan Pennington, who put in a tough hard tackle right at the start of the game, was reluctant to leave the field due to an injury but Neil though it wise to give him a breather after all the hard work he'd put in. On came Kyle to add strength to the pack. With HFH rampant again, the ball found good hands from Mike O'Brien to Parly and then to Pricey. He mustered up a beautiful kick right for the corner and Thomas Spencer was first to leg it towards the line and dive at the ball with an out stretched arm to ground the ball and score. The strength of the wind was too much for the conversion attempt from the touchline but HFH had increased the score to 00 - 05.As the HFH players tried hard to maintain their concentration, Rylands put together a nice across field passing movement near to the HFH line. The ball found its way to the winger who managed to find a tiny gap and cross in the corner. The kick was missed and that earlier drop goal of Pricey's was starting to pay dividends. With 12 minutes remaining, Kyle injuring his knee and Penno re-entered the field with eagerness. The play was now reaching fever pitch and when HFH made a good break, who was there in attack, none other than James Hilton. With Thomas outside him, Jimmy passed the ball to Thomas, who, had he got the ball, would have scored for sure. Unfortunately the ball went into touch. On the last play of the game, Rylands put in a big long kick into the HFH half and they all started chasing the ball. Jimmy Hilton killed the ball and makes it save in HFH possession. When the whistle sounded one couldn?t tell who was cheering the loudest, the HFH players or the HFH spectators. This was a great team performance and one for the record books - it was the first time this season that Rylands U14`s had been beaten at home. This should really instill some real confidence into all of the HFH U14`s players and could not have come at a better time than now because next week, HFH U14`s entertain Kells at Wilmere Lane Playing Fields, in the second round of the National Cup Competition.Man of The Match was given to Daniel Price.Once again for the second week running, there were no other trophies awarded. Neil Meadows had deemed that each and ever player gave their all and it would be really difficult to single players out for trophy awards. It was another superb performance by every player and a demonstration of how to play as a team.Well Done Boys, you all worked really hard and never relented - excellent.

NATIONAL CUP ROUND TWO.
The HFH U14's went into this game with two consecutive victories under their belts but the team they were playing in the National Cup Round Two was an unknown quantity. With the playing surface of the pitch remarkably intact, HFH's elected to play down the slope with the wind and sunshine to their backs. As it happened, this was a fine call and allowed a rampant HFH U14's to clock-up twenty two points in the first half.In both attack and defence, the HFH U14's players demonstrated how much they have improved in the later part of this season. A demonstration of this was evident early in the first half when the Kells player tried to burst his way through the HFH line. A busting tackle by Mike Bailey stopped him dead, and more than that, it caused the player to spill the ball. This then put HFH in the attacking driving seat.Penetrating into the Kells 22 metres, HFH were eager to cross the line and good hands from Jordan Holland to Mike O'Brien allowed Mike to edge his way even closer to the Kells try line only for the ball to be ripped put. From the resulting free kick, the HFH players passed the ball along the line before Ste Shone decided to made a good run for the Kells try area. Knowing he was going to be cut-off, he passed out to James Parle who was held up over the line. The pressure was still on Kells as HFH pressed hard into their 22-metre area. With Pricey putting one of his across field specialty kicks, there to the front of the opposition's sticks was Mike O'Brien to collect it. Straight from the play the ball, Ryan Gardam collected and powered his way over the try line. David Meadows converted the kick from in front of the sticks. From the restart, Kells tried to raise their responsiveness but were to keen when they were penalised for carrying on after the tackle had been made and called by the referee. With a quick free kick, the ball was tapped and put in Mike O'Brien's breadbasket. With no fear, Mike "bee lined it" for the line and scored a fine try. The difficult conversion was put over by Ryan Gardam.Mike Bailey, Mike O'Brien, Ryan Gardam and Jordan Pennington made further and relentless runs. There was also some great work by Jack Williams, Daniel Clegg and Josh Cassidy. This accumulated in another try when, Mike O'Brien got the ball to Mike Bailey who was pulled to ground with a good tackle. From the play the ball, Jordan Holland scooped over the line to score a try. Ryan was just short with the conversion.By now the whole HFH team were looking for scores and this kept Kells on their back feet. James Hilton was always there to support the attack from his Full Back position and even set them up after collecting cleanly the high clearing kicks of Kells. From such an attack it resulted in With Thomas Spencer and James Parle in pursuit, the Kells players had no choice other then to kick the ball dead. With Kells dropping the ball out to the HFH team, they then had to defend their line again. This they did and a resulting scrum gave Kells possession. A clean and well-executed knuckle crunching tackle by Ste Shone caused the Kells player to loose the ball. With Jack Williams giving the crowd something to applaud about with his daring run, the ball was passed out wide with the try line begging, Unfortunately the referee, who was right in line, adjudged the pass to have gone forward. When Parley collected the ball in the HFH half, he put in a dazzling run to the Kells 22 metre area, and set-up the HFH team in a good attacking position. James Parle didn't hang about even with players still hanging from him; he pounced up and quickly played the ball. There at attacking half back was Ryan Gardam who burst through two players to score. David Meadows knocked over the conversion and with the half time whistle sounded, the score line was 22 - 00 to HFH.Start of the second half Jack Williams was rested for James Giblin and the heavens opened. The HFH players were now going up hill with the strong wind blowing the rain into each player's eyes. But this did not hinder the HFH team who continued to demonstrate their capabilities, both in attack and defence.Ryan Gardam was now leading by example and his captaincy was a shrewd move by Neil Meadows. Showing they to could perform stunning runs were Cleggie, Mike O'Brien, Josh, Mike Bailey and Ste Shone.David Meadows was well into the attack and received a final pass from Mike Bailey and had a clear run-in to score. But it wasn't to be because once again the referee adjudged a forward pass.At this point the HFH players were at their meanest. With the Kells players attempting to make ground and clear their line, the opposite was happening. The keenness of the HFH tackling drove the Kells team backwards and on their last tackle they were driven over their own line. From the drop out David Meadows made a stunning burst and a lovely inside pass allowed Mike Bailey to score with players on his back. Pricey was unlucky with the conversion. It wasn't long before the HFH team were back in the oppositions 22 metre and a fantastic passing movement, with many of the players touching the ball, lead to David Meadows eventually passing to Thomas Spencer. Without further ado, Thomas rolled up his sleeves and darted for the try line. With three Kells players on him and short of the line it looked doubtful that he would score but his strength and determination made him score. Again, the conversion was missed due to the strong wind.To round things off in the final attack, Ryan contributed another brilliant run and dropped the ball into David Meadows hands. He scored under the sticks and Ryan popped the ball over for the conversion. This then signaled the end of the game as the whistle was sounded.Again, this was a great team performance by all and every single player in the team and now puts the HFH U14's into the third round of the National Cup.Man of The Match was given to Jack Williams. For the third week running Neil Meadows decided not to award any other trophies. The efforts and improvements of ever-single player made it impossible to single out people for trophy awards. Yet again it was another superb performance by the team and showed how a team should play together. All players deserve credit for today's performance.

Oldham St Annes v's Halton F H
This was a friendly match against OSA's from the Premier Division]Following a spate of good consecutive performances and wins, the HFH U14's were temporally stopped last weekend when the Student Rugby League Regional Championship Games were brought to Wilmere Lane Playing Fields. It was therefore essential that the team played this weekend; otherwise they would have gone two weeks without a game. This is something Neil Meadows wanted to avoid because next week the HFH U14's face Wibsey Juniors (Bradford), in the Quarter Finals of the National Cup Competition. With no league fixture available, the Hornets had to travel along the M62 to face Oldham St Anne's from the Premier League, who were also without a league fixture.Using the main pitch outside the clubhouse, and with a reasonable crowd watching, the HFH U14's kicked off to OSA's for this 12:00pm friendly game.Within the space of the first set of six tackles, Oldham had burst through the HFH defensive line to score a try, and basically this set the scene for the whole of the first half. The bigger size, the zapping passes, the straight runs, the aggressive manner, were all attributes which all of the Oldham players possessed. Their keenness, good positional play and strength, were evident each time they touched the ball. Looking at the two performances, there appeared to be a large gulf between the two divisions.Having said that, and not using it as an excuse, it was obvious that some HFH players really didn't want to be on the pitch. Could it have been they were thinking about the cup match the following week? Were they concerned about getting hurt? Was the opposition so big, strong and powerful that they knew there was little chance of winning?Whatever it was, and it was probably a number of things not just one, the HFH players on the field were capable of much, much more than they showed. If all the HFH players had followed the example set by captain Ryan Gardam, the gulf between the two sides, which was so obvious to see, would have been a mere trickle of water in an almost dried-up stream. Ryan tackled like a demon, copybook style around the legs, and brought the Oldham players crashing to the ground. In attack, Ryan ran straight and strong, with determination and conviction. But one man cannot win games, and unfortunately for HFH, Oldham had lots of Ryan's!By half time the score line had reached 24 - 00.In the second half the HFH U14's put a bit more together and 'had-a-go'. With it been a friendly match, HFH were able to make several interchanges, which was really important because some of the players were returning after illnesses and it was clear to see that some of them hadn't fully recovered.Aiding Ryan in the second half was Jordan Holland who pulled off some fine 'around the legs' tackles to bring the larger running Oldham players to ground.HFH had few opportunities to score, even in the second half but good across the field passing lead to the ball finding Thomas Spencer's hands. Hugging the touchline, his path was clear and he went for it but some excellent tackling by the covering Oldham player, just caused Thomas's foot to cross the touchline as he clambered to the ground.Yes the Hornets had a little more about them second half and spent some time in the Oldham section of the field but the class of the Oldham St Anne's players and the attitude of the HFH players, presented a bridge to far. At least for the HFH players anyway! With the score line now reading 36 - 00 and with some four minutes to go, Dave Meadows sustained a back injury in a mangling tackle involving several players. His out cry off pain caused the referee to temporally stop play immediately. After some five to ten minutes of no rugby activity, the referee along with both coaches, agreed to blow the final whistle and end the game prematurely to the agreement of both sets of players. The HFH U14's at least go into next week's game with a recent game under their belts but this is surely one they would rather forget! It can only be hoped that this was a temporally blip and that next week, the players will have already learnt how not to play rugby, and give the travelling fans something positive to shout about.

Wibsey Juniors (Bradford) v's Halton F H
[Quarter Finals of the National Cup Competition]
A trip to Bradford was on the cards this weekend, as the HFH U14`s took on Wibsey Juniors U14`s in the Quarter Round of the National Cup. An early departure was needed for this trip and the coach left Wilmere Lane at 9:00am on the Sunday morning. For an away trip on a coach, the players all seemed somewhat subdued with little or no preying antics from any of them. It was a rather quiet and relaxed atmosphere; could it have been the early morning call?Arriving slightly late at the Wibsey Public House H.Q., the players were ushered into the rear changing room for a quick change; packed their clothes into their kit bags, and then vacated the room for the next team. Kit bags were then put into the trunk of the coach and the players hopped on for a trip to the playing pitch. On arrival at the venue, the Wibsey players were already well into their full swing warm-up preparations. The HFH players commenced their warm-up routines on a reduced time scale. With the pitch having a rather steep incline, it was obvious there would be no problems with water lodging anywhere on the playing area, and the first half started with HFH playing down the hill. For the first ten minutes, HFH pressurised the Wibsey line but were unable to find any points. When Wibsey gained ball control and started attacking from their own half, they ran strong and straight. Some good straight on tackling by Ryan Gardam prevented further penetration of the HFH defences. Unfortunately, not all of the HFH players were of the same conviction and the 'team' performance was sadly below par in the first half. There were some isolated incidents of inspiration and again this was lead by Ryan Gardam, who took the ball running and headed towards the try line. Only a brave tackle saved Wibsey, as Ryan`s foot went over the touchline. Another similar incident occurred in the same part of the pitch, when Pricey lofted a long pass out to Ste Shone. Beating several players and virtually following in Ryan`s footsteps, Ste ran towards the try line. Once again, another good Wibsey tackle forced Ste into touch. At the other end of the pitch, a magnificent tackle by Jordan Pennington saved the HFH team any further embarrassment, when Jordan prevented the Wibsey player from putting the ball down over the try line under the sticks. The down side to this was the knee injury sustained by Jordan, which finished his game.Nearing half time, and with the thought of playing up the hill, the HFH team was 16 - 00 down. Up steps Ryan Gardam, who showed true character and led by example. Taking the ball 'up front' Ryan burst his way towards the line and absolutely nothing was going to stop him. Breaking tackles, he reached the try line with four Wibsey players clinging onto him, and was still able to score. Ryan also kicked the conversion to make the score line 16 - 06With little time left of the first half, the HFH team found themselves close to the Wibsey line again. On the last tackle of the set, Pricey put in a neat speculative across field kick, which mirror imaged that of one of the Wibsey tries, only for James Hilton, who collected the ball neatly ready to score, to be adjudged off side. That then concluded the first half and the HFH players were adrift by ten points, instead of what they thought should have been four points. In the second half, the HFH teams performance wasn`t to standards but it was an improvement on the first half. There were some good interchanges of play and on several occasions the players put some good attacking moves together. Jordan Holland was solid playing the Full Back role.On once such occasion, Pricey kept the ball alive on the last and passed it to James Parle who committed his opposite player before passing the ball to Thomas Spencer. Running parallel to the touchline, Thomas embarked on climbing the hill but as in the first half, some good covering tackling forced Thomas into touch. But the HFH team didn`t give up and battled away. A startling run by James Parle took the Hornets just past the half way line and the Wibsey players were backpedalling. Only some good tackling by Wibsey kept HFH at bay.As the second half progressed, Wibsey took another try from HFH after an infringement in a tackle by HFH. Tapping and running the ball, the Wibsey players tore his way through four to five HFH players and scored under the sticks. This made the score line 22 - 06.With the HFH players finding their climbing boots feet in the second half, it was no surprise when Phil Smith through a pass out to James Hilton who dove over the line to score. The conversion was missed but it made little difference, as the final whistle was sounded not too long afterwards. With a score line of 22 - 10, the HFH team knew this game was one for the taking and this was proven by their second half display. It could have been a different outcome if the players had not left their heads and minds on the coach with the driver!

Pilkington Recs v's Halton F H
Dejected from last weeks defeat in the National Cup, the HFH U14`s were now concentrating on the league and made the short trip to St Helen`s to face Pilkington Recs. This was the first meeting of these two sides and although Pilks were bottom of the division, with HFH positioned mid-stream, there were only two points separating the clubs. Consequently both teams were eager to earn q victory and secure two additional points. In Pilks case to allow them to draw level with HFH, and in HFH`s case, to pull four points clear of the bottom.Pilks had a couple of big lads in the pack that knew how to perform in all aspects of rugby league, both in attack and in defence. With HFH starting the game, the Pilks forwards drove hard into the HFH half and on the last tackle of the first set, the referee adjudged one of the HFH players to be off side. Pilks took the 10 metres and progressed towards the HFH try line. Passing the ball along the line, they scored in the corner but missed the goal.Four points down and that`s how it remained until half time. The score line reflected the competitiveness of both sides but unfortunately for HFH, their momentum within the first half was constantly stopped because of the number of injured Pilks players. After the half time lecture, the HFH players took up their positions to receive the kick-off. With a new eagerness, the HFH players penetrated into the Pilks half. On the last tackle, Pricey, who had a rather quite game, put in a chip over the defensive line. The Pilks winger caught the ball but then allowed it to spill from his hands. Scrum down, HFH ball. From his Loose Forward position, Ryan Gardam picked the ball up and aimed for the try line. He was only stopped short because of the number of Pilks players tackling him. Some quick and neat play the ball work found Mike O`Brien going blind. With Mike collecting the ball in the breadbasket, he pounded over the line in the corner. Ryan missed the conversion. It was now 04 - 04.From the kick-off, HFH put themselves under pressure by allowing the ball to go into touch. Only some good defensive work by the HFH team kept Pilks at bay. When HFH regained possession of the ball, they were still in their own 22 but this soon changed.Mike Bailey, who until now was having a below par performance, gathered the ball and made a lovely run to the half way line. Up in support was Tom Spencer, who was making his mark in the game by coming in from his wing and making several determined runs, collected the ball from the `play the ball` position. He made further good ground to put HFH in an attacking position. With Pricey now collecting the ball for the last tackle, he put in another awkward kick for the Pilks Fullback. Fortunately for HFH, the Fullback knocked on. From the resultant scrum, Ryan tried his arm again and took the ball from his loose position. Taking several Pilks players with him, he scored out-wide. Pricey was unlucky with the conversion. With HFH now starting to dominate the second half, some good individual runs with the ball were starting to shine through. Johan Curzon, Ste Shone, James Parle, Jack Williams (returning from illness) and Mike O`Brien had some particularly superb runs. This now meant HFH were spending nearly all their time in the Pilks half. Several chip kicks were put in by Pricey and Mike Bailey, which maintained the pressure on the Pilks players. On one of the set of six, the majority of the HFH players were to the right hand side of the pitch, while the `play the ball` occurred towards the centre of the field. Pilks noticed this unorthodox set play and compensated for this by repositioning players. With Josh Cassidy now on the field, he collected the play the ball, and instead of passing it to the right, he reversed his passing to feed Ryan, who had elected to go left. The gap was there and Ryan scored just left of the sticks. Dave Meadows got the conversion. With their tails now up, the HFH players started to perform as they can. Johan collected another ball and burst a hole through the Pilks line before getting tackled near the half way line. Not to be out done, Mike O`Brien made a fantastic run, knocking player after player out of the way. A try would have been a just reward but unfortunately he was stopped short. It was unfortunate, and for whatever reason, the HFH team dropped into a lacklustre mood for a short period, which allowed Pilks to score under the sticks. With the conversion successful, the score line was now 10 - 14.Straight from the kick-off, the Pilks player was fumbling with the ball as it bounced about in front of him. Out of the blue up pops James Hilton, who had legged it along his touchline. Without a `by your leave` Jimmy neatly collected the ball first time and made his way to the try line. With the covering defence now imminent, he dove nice and low to cross the line for a fabulous try. Ryan was just short of the sticks with the conversion. With Pilks now desperate for another score, they worked their way to the HFH line. Their determination was nearly rewarded when an inside pass allowed the Pilks player to cross the HFH try line. Fortunately for HFH, Jordan Pennington had spotted the danger and had already positioned himself exactly at that point. His forceful tackle resulted in the Pilks player dropping the ball over the line. This match ended to HFH`s satisfaction with a score line of 10 - 18. It was an eventful game of rugby played by two determined sides. The `Man of The Match` award went to James Parle who seemed to be everywhere and into everything; this was a worthy award. The `Most Improved` award went to Mike O`Brien, whose second half performance started to approach his best. The `Best Tackler` award went to Ryan Gardam who never fails to show everybody on the pitch how to tackle. Ryan goes low around the legs with strength, impact and power, which makes the attacking player just collapse to the ground.HFH have to meet Pilks once more in a rearranged home league fixture. Lets hope the HFH players can push on from this victory.

Hindley v's Halton F H
Travelling away for the fourth consecutive week, the HFH U14`s team nipped to Hindley to face a side who beat them at home earlier in the season. On a cold, windy and wet day the HFH U14`s played against the elements in a first half that delivered only one try. For the first twenty minutes, the HFH team were camped in the Hindley half, and on most occasions, only metres away from the try line.No matter what they tried, the HFH players were unable to cross the white wash to score points. At times, they were their own worst enemy, trying long passes and high kicks when the conditions didn`t prevail for such tactics. This was compounded by errors of judgement when holding the ball. Instead of chipping on the last or passing the ball out to a supporting player, the election to retain possession proved to be rather too much for the away fans. No matter how much the fans shouted to pass the ball, it just seemed to concentrate the minds of the players even more to keep retention of the ball. With their first attacking action and venture it to the HFH half of the pitch, Hindley scored a fine try with the conversion sailing over. There were some noticeable pieces of action from the HFH players in the first half. Good hard runs by Ryan Gardam and Mike O`Brien brought HFH close to scoring several times. Pricey started to get his kicking game together towards the end of the first half and on one occasion, HFH were unlucky not to score when the Hindley player got to the ball first and knocked it dead.Tom Spencer had a good linking-up game, coming in from the wing to give the forwards a rest. His deceitful running style ensures that most of the time, he is able to keep the potential tackler wondering what to expect. James `Parley` Parle seems to get better with each game and has settled in extremely well with the squad. On the defending side, HFH have come on leaps and bounds. The tackling has tightened and strengthened itself, and even with some of the big lads coming through, the defensive line stood proud. On one set of six, the Hindley players were unable to move anywhere when Jimmy Hilton, who now seems to relish the wing position, put in five consecutive tackles to demoralise the Hindley team. With the half time whistle sounding, and both teams on the halfway line, Hindley were happy to be leading 06 - 00.In the second half, and with the elements behind them, the HFH team began to take command. On the first raid into the Hindley half, Mike Bailey put in a cross-field kick, which was scooped up by `Parley` who scored out wide. Ryan was unsuccessful with the conversion. On another occasion the HFH defence was magically turned into attack. This materialisation occurred when David Meadows, who was chasing a HFH kick on the last tackle, met the Hindley ball collector head-on. Although outsized, David managed to seize the ball from the Hindley player`s possession who in turn looked unfavourably at David, Not waiting to listen to or answer any questions, David had a quick play the ball. Up in support came Ryan `Captain` Gardam with a devastating run. Hindley committed several of their players in an attempt to try and tackle him but it was futile. Ryan`s mind was made up and he crossed the line with Hindley players hanging from him. David Meadows was unfortunate with the kick but HFH were now in the lead. Not to be out done, Mike O`Brien mirror imaged Ryan`s try by performing the same feat, with Ryan just missing the conversion. With all the HFH players contributing to a great second half, it was pressure after pressure applied to the Hindley defensive line by the HFH team. Pricey put in another of his cross-fields kicks and David Meadows, collected it and ran straight for the corner flag. On crossing the line, he realised nobody was chasing him so he changed course and continued running until he was behind the sticks before putting the ball down. Ryan got the conversion. From the restart, Hindley tried a high kick but the wind caught it and took it back into their half the pitch. Pricey was there when the ball landed and with no Hindley players wishing to pick it up, Pricey gave it his left foot and down the field towards the Hindley try line did it travel. Pricey gave chase and when it became evident that Pricey was outpacing the Hindley players, one of them pulled at his jersey and allowed another Hindley player to pounce on the ball. But the referee was right up with play and seen what happened. Giving a free kick to HFH, Mike Bailey came steaming through to score his second try and secure the release of his bedroom TV set back from his mum. Mike was ecstatic. The remaining substitutes played their part, getting introduced to the game in the second half and getting stuck-in. Daniel Clegg, James Giblin and Scott McKeown all played their part in this fantastic victory.Well done to all the squad. You all performed brilliantly second half but you haven`t yet touched the potential that lies beneath the characters of you all!Enjoy the telly tonight Mike - bet you fall asleep watching it!!! You all had great games guys.Man of The Match was David Meadows. Top Tackler was Ste Shone. Most Improved Player was Phil Smith

Halton F H v's Pilkington Recs
Playing their first league home match this year, the HFH U14`s were entertaining Pilkington Recs at Wilmere Lane. It was only four weeks ago when these two sides met at St Helens, with HFH coming away victorious. This weekend would be different though because even with HFH been favourites by virtue of that away win, this was Pilks last game of the season, and if they didn`t win, they`d finish bottom of Division One and probably get relegated. It was all to play for and with the weather conditions been the way it was (very strong winds), it surely wouldn`t be a classic event. But from the kick-off, the HFH team set out their stall when Thomas Spencer collected the ball in his winger position and cut in field. Beating player after player, Tom managed to get himself under the sticks to score a fine individual try. Ryan Gardam tapped the conversion over. From the kick-off, Pricey collected the ball but was immediately pounced on by three Pilks players. Unperturbed, he managed to off load the ball to Mike O`Brien, who was close to the touchline. Instead of cutting back inside, Mike O`B decided to take the Pilks players on, as he dashed along the touchline, and into he Pilks half. Approaching the Pilks try line and probably thinking he was going to score, Mike was only a short distance away when he had his ankles tapped. He fell to the ground, only a few centimetres short of the line but it had been a terrific run.The weather conditions progressively got worse with hailstones pelting down. Territorial, there was no advantage to either side, since the winds were lashing across the pitch from wing to wing. In the first half, this meant Jimmy Hilton was kept busy, because he was on the receiving end of most to the Pilks kicks but he never dropped a ball.In another attacking move, the HFH U14`s swung the ball along the line from wing to wing, and this resulted in David Meadows getting `held-up` over the line. From the resultant play the ball restart, Jordan Pennington skimmed his way over the try line to score in the corner. Pricey got a beautiful conversion from the touchline. With the HFH team playing somewhere near to potential, a cheeky grubber kick from Pricey started to run and bobble along, on its way to the Pilks try line. As it crossed the line, wingman Jimmy Hilton was there to touch it down, for another three points to HFH. Ryan`s conversion attempt from the touchline was on target but the wind was over powering and drifted the ball wide. With the game producing some good rugby by both sides, the play swung from one half of the pitch to the other. The difference was the HFH tackling and fitness, which has come on leaps and bounds over the last month or so.Parley was always hungry for the ball and put some good scooping runs in, while Mike Bailey committed to some `big hits` in the second half. When Pilks were awarded a free kick, they went for distance and didn`t make touch. There to collect the ball neatly was fullback Jordan Farrell, who started a great attacking run that took him to the half way line. This set-up another HFH attack into the Pilks half and it wasn`t long before HFH were pressing the try line. Some good hands resulted in Pricey laying off a neat short pass to the steaming Ryan Gardam, who was unstoppable and scored. With the conversion missed by Pricey and the half time whistle blowing, the HFH players were happy to get together in a circle and warm their hands. With a half time score line of 20-00, they deserved a little indulgence.Second half was in some ways, reminiscent of the first half, at least the start anyway! Ste Shone playing centre, scored a fantastic solo try when he carved his way through the Pilks players to score out wide. Ryan missed with the conversion. With Jack Williams, Johan Curzon and Mike O`Brien putting some drilling runs in, the HFH attack was always on the move. On one such occasion, Mike O`Brien went blind from the Pilks 22 metre line and scored in the corner. This time, David Meadows missed with the conversion. The scoreboard was showing 28 - 00 but the Pilks players kept on plugging away and their determination paid off when their big prop forward collected the ball a couple of metres away from the HFH try line. Although the HFH defences were standing up to the Pilks attack, five HFH players were unable to get the big fellow down, and he took them across the line with him. From the restart, Pricey honed the ball across the top of the playing surface, and with the strong wind behind it, the ball found its way to touch with speed. Scrum down and HFH head and feed.As the second half began to drift towards completion, the HFH players seemed to ease off the gas and this allowed Pilks to score another try, this time under the sticks. When the game was stopped for what seemed to be a more than average injury to a Pilks player, both teams tried to keep warm by jumping about. After several minutes, and when the Pilks player was slowly helped from the ground, the referee blew for full time.It was another win for the HFH U14`s and a double over last seasons ex Premier side Pilkington Recs.HFH U14`s now have two league fixtures remaining. Lets hope they can maintain a 100% record for 2007!Man of The Match was Mike O`Brien. Top Tackler was Ste Shone.
Most Improved Player was Jordan Holland.

Moorfield v's Halton F H
Without a league fixture for this weekend, NWC paired Widnes Moorfield against HFH in a friendly fixture. With Moorfield U14`s unable to obtain a kick off slot at their own ground, the fixture was swapped to Wilmere Lane Playing Fields.Full credit goes to the Moorfield U14`s for fulfilling this fixture, with only ten of their own players available. To even up the numbers on each side, HFH loaned Moorfield three players and still retained two substitutes. On a hot Sunday morning and on a hard pitch, the HFH team played the game as though it was a normal league fixture. By half time they had run up 38 points with no reply.Tries came from, Jimmy Hilton, Ryan Gardam (2 - one of which was the length of the pitch), Mike O`Brien, Thomas Spencer (with Scott McKeown tackling Thomas over the line), Mike Bailey (good break from the half way line) and Jordan Pennington (after a quick penalty tap). Goals came from David Meadows (2), Ryan Gardam (2) and Pricey (1).In the second half further tries were scored by Jordan Holland, James Parle (collecting ball straight from restart and weaving his way to the try line), James Hilton (2 - with one of the tries following some good across field passing), Ryan Gardam (2), Jordan Pennington and Phil Smith (following a reversed inside pass from Mike Bailey). Goals were by David Meadows (2), Ryan Gardam, Daniel Clegg and James Giblin. This was clearly a miss-match fixture although HFH have been on the receiving end of some demoralising results themselves against Premier sides.Nonetheless, credit goes to the HFH team for treating the second half more in line with a training session against opposition, and for throwing the ball about. For the Moorfield side, the players never gave up the chase and for that they should be praised.Next week, the HFH U14`s should be back to league duties when they travel to Warrington to face Latchford Albion in the final fixture of the season.

Latchford Albion v's Halton F H
{LAST FIXTURE)
Playing their last league fixture of the season, HFH U14`s made the short trip to Victoria Park, Warrington, to face Latchford Albion.Unbeaten in their last run of seven fixtures, this was going to be a tough one for the HFH u14`s, since Latchford were riding on the crest of a wave. But with the Hornets kicking the game off, an instant bit of luck went their way. With the ball bouncing about and the Latchford players slow to react, the speeding Jack Williams gathered first and gave the HFH possession. Camped in the Latchford quarter of the field, the HFH forwards battered the try line but were unable to score. It took some eight minutes before Latchford actually crossed the half way line and into HFH territory, and even then, Thomas Spencer tackled the Latchford player into touch. Now settled down, the HFH team began to play some delightful rugby both in attack and defence. This was typified by the first try for HFH. Mike Bailey put a kick in which bounced just in front of the Latchford Fullback. Attempting to collect, the referee blew his whistle when the Fullback knocked-on, something which the Latchford player disagreed about. For contesting the referee`s decision, the referee awarded a free kick against the Latchford Fullback.Jack Williams, once again with one of his fast, straight and no nonsense runs, made excellent ground and this set up a fine attacking position for HFH. With good hands, the ball found its way to Jordan Holland, who was up supporting from the Fullback position. Running at the Latchford line and showing the ball, the defenders were unsure what his intentions were. Selling a dummy, Jordan sailed through a gap to score out wide. Ryan Gardam was unlucky with the touchline conversion. And that was just the start!Next, Pricey put in a lovely chip kick over the defensive line. With Ryan Gardam on his shoulders, he gave chase. Collecting the ball perfectly, Ryan made good ground with Latchford players clinching from his back. Having committed the defenders, Ryan managed to get the ball out to Pricey, who then put in a neat little grubber kick to the corner. Up pops Thomas Spencer to register his first try of the game. Pricey missed the touchline conversion.Near to half time, HFH scored again this time it was winger James Hilton. Unfortunately the referee ruled it out for an alleged forward pass and disallowed the try.Second half Latchford started off in a different vein and HFH found themselves defending their own try line. Great tackling by every single HFH player denied Latchford the opportunity to score. But it took a bit of initiative from Jordan Holland to relieve the situation. From a one-on-one tack, Jordan wrestled the ball free from the Latchford player`s arms, and made his way to the half way line before getting tackled. On reaching the last tackle, Mike Bailey put in a high chip kick to the corner. With the Latchford Winger and Fullback appearing to have the situation under control, this did not deter Thomas Spencer, as he powered his way along the touchline. Reaching the two Latchford players as the ball descends, his presence caused both players to miss the ball and Thomas willingly dove on the ball to score his second try. Pricey missed the kick.As the game grew longer, the HFH team grew stronger and from a scrum close to the Latchford sticks, Ryan collected from the loose position and galloped across the line to score. He then kicked his own conversion. Not to be out done, Prop Mike O`Brien, who had a great game, decided he`d get on the score sheet. From an attacking position, he bulldozed his way across the line to claim a try. David Meadows got the conversion. With the last game of the season resulting in a positive score line of 00 - 24 to HFH, the lads can be proud of a fantastic second half of season performance. In 2007, they have only lost one league game, and that was to Woolston; a game that was there for the winning.Nonetheless, every single one of the HFH U14`s players did their bit today against a confident Latchford side. With Mike O`Brien at one Prop position and the other occupied by Jack Williams, there was just enough room left for Mr Bailey to be squeezed between the two of them. This gave HFH a formidable front row. With Second Rowers Johan Curzon and Phil Smith, who both played all over the pitch, and Team Captain Ryan Gardam honouring the Loose position (from where he excels), its no wonder the Latchford team got demoralised! The two smallest players in the team, David Meadows at Scrum Half and Pricey at Standoff, were always a thorn in the opposition?s side. When the ball reached the Centres in the names of Ste Shone and out of position James Parle, there was sure to be something special happening. The same would go for the two Wingers in, James Hilton and Thomas Spencer; with both players now beginning to find their confidence on the extremes as they seize every opportunity to impress.Jordan Holland at Fullback is growing in stature. His good defences and attacking capabilities are always there to help create the extra man for the team. Then the squad was complemented with the substitutes namely James Giblin, Josh Cassidy and Kyle Nickle. All three players got onto the field and were able to demonstrate what they can do and helped the team along. Two other players to mention for this last report of the season are Daniel Clegg and Jordan Pennington. Both were unavailable for this last fixture but have contributed to turning the HFH U14`s team 'around' during the 2007 period of the season.Well done to every single player for today`s performance and for all your efforts throughout the season. You`ve all stuck together and that has bonded the team into what it is now. Next season it`s U15`s and competitiveness gets stronger. What you have all achieved in 2007 is an example of what will be wanted in 2007/2008 but more of it. Well done to you all from Neil, Mark & PeterAnd finally, lets not forget those parents who are always there no matter what the weather conditions. Your continued support is appreciated and doesn`t go unnoticed. Thank you.

26 May 07
Blackwood Bulldogs (South Wales) v's Halton F H
[TOUR FIXTURE]
HFH U14`s embarked on their end of season tour to South Wales at 6:30am, on Saturday 26th May 2007. Remarkably nobody was really late, although some did take it to the wire. The Nickle`s had the farthest to travel for rendezvousing at the Widnes Recreational Club on time, and they even beat some of the families living much closer to the Rec Club. With Phil, the coach driver not knowing what he was letting himself in for, down the M6 did the HFH U14`s party trundle, everybody still shell shocked by the earliness of the departure. The destination was straight to Blackwood Bulldogs, with a hotel visit and check-in having to wait until later.Encountering the inevitable problems of motorway driving around Birmingham, and allowing for only a brief toilet stop at a one toileted garage (the hedge rows had never been cut!), arrival at Blackwood Bulldogs was approximately 11:15am. Phil sure needed his coach driving skills to encounter the approach roads to the club, which allowed no room for error. With the 12:00pm kick off delayed until 12:15pm; this gave Head Coach Neil Meadows some valuable extra time for the teams' pre-match warm up sessions on the one main pitch. While this was taking place, the army of HFH parents and supporters were massing in the stands to one side of the pitch. After selecting their seats and making themselves comfortable, they tested their vocals in readiness for the kick off by directing some banter at anybody who walked past.Elsewhere in the ground, the Blackwood Bulldogs were busy getting prepared for the full day ahead of them. With three matches taking place after each other, there was going to be a lot of mouths to feed and water. The club itself is steeped in Rugby Union tradition and it was only with the recent foresightedness of Stuart Hopkins (42 year man at the club) along with Roger Moore, did the concept of Rugby League develop at Blackwood. Rugby Union is played during the traditional months of the year, while Rugby League occupies what were the empty months of the year, when the clubhouse and facilities were not used as extensively as they are now.Rugby League has its own committee and is starting to build on its current open age sides success, by developing the junior sections. The HFH U14`s tour fixture against a Bulldog combined U14`s & U15`s side, was another part of this development. The facilities at Blackwood are more than adequate for supporting the high standards now expected in Rugby League. There is a two story detached changing block facility, with the changing rooms exceptionally large. The pitch is surrounded by a concrete pillared and horizontally bared steel supporting structure. There is an outside fenced Astro type facility close to the changing block, which allows teams to warm up prior to a game. It is also used as a winter training facility. The clubhouse is positioned to one end of the rugby pitch, which itself is of significant size. Outside the clubhouse, there is a flagged patio area fitted out with circular wooden tables & bench seating. While the barbeque started to sizzle and export those mouth watering and irresistible waves of tasty food, under the adjacent gazebo, the amplifiers were being set-up. Whenever a try was scored in the senior game, they blasted out a variety of sounds to maintain the atmosphere and interact with the crowd. The MC regularly announced the latest score line. But back to the HFH U14`s match!Come 12:15pm and Richard Reece took up the refereeing duties for the first half. After allowing both sides to have team photographs taken, the captains were brought together for the toss of a coin.Bulldogs kicked off to start the game and both teams took some time to settle down. Playing on a large and hard pitch, there were bound to be some errors occurring and as both teams sized each other up, there were a number of dropped and spilled balls. After five minutes, Mike Bailey planted a kick into the Bulldogs corner on the last tackle. James Hilton flew down the wing to beat everybody to the ball and score in the corner. Ryan Gardam was unlucky with the touchline conversion.Even in the early stages it appeared as though the Hornets had many of the facets of the game under control. After ten minutes, injured Jordan Pennington was substituted and Phil Smith took to the pitch. Two minutes later, Pricey put in a chip kick to the same Bulldogs corner as Mike Bailey had done some previously. Like a wild animal smelling the bate James Hilton hogged the touchline as he paced towards the Bulldogs try line. Yet again, he was first to reach the ball and scored another wonderful try. This time, Pricey was unfortunate with the touchline conversion. With the score line reading 00 - 08, the HFH U14`s players had to with stand an onslaught from the Bulldogs. Line after line of attacks was pressed continually against the Hornets scoring area and only some great defending by every single HFH player prevented the Bulldogs from scoring. This was exemplified when in one defending battle; the HFH players were able to hold up one of the big Bulldogs forwards over the line. Taking the ball backwards from the HFH try line, the Bulldogs were on their sixth tackle. They elected to put in a very high kick that started to descend near the Hornets goal posts. With nobody from either side able to collect the ball cleanly, it bounced over the HFH try line and several Bulldogs players pursued it. Fortunately for the Hornets, James Hilton had come in field and was able to knock the ball over the dead ball line. From the drop out form under the sticks, the HFH U14`s were soon back under the cosh. Fortunately, some determined and aggressive tackling caused the Bulldogs to knock on. At the twenty-minute point, Neil brought Phil Smith off and Jordan Pennington took to the pitch again.Three minutes later while Neil was attending to injured Fullback Jordan Holland, Coach Mark Houghton dashed onto the field to attend to another HFH player lying on the ground. Shouting for Neil`s assistance and waving his arms to beckon Neil towards him, things seemed somewhat serious. After a lengthy period of time the crowd could see that the injured player was Jordan Pennington, as he was lead from the field by both Neil and Mark. Replacing Jordan was substitute Daniel Clegg. Replacing injured Jordan Holland was Phil Smith. With the resume of play, Pricey put in a beautiful chip kick over the Bulldogs heads and gave chase. Collecting the ball, as it bounced conveniently, was HFH U14`s Captain, Ryan Gardam, who was steaming towards the Bulldogs line. With an inevitable tack to take place, Ryan off loaded the ball back to the supporting Pricey. With only the Fullback to beat, Pricey lobbed the Bulldogs player and gave chase as the ball bobbed and wobbled towards Thomas Spencer`s side of the pitch corner. Pricey managed to win the race for the ball but was tackled to ground.A blustering drive by Mike O`Brien took the Hornets really close to the Bulldogs line. With the next wave of HFH attacks, Jack Williams took the ball up. He burst the Bulldogs defensive line and scored a fine try out wide, after a great team build up. David Meadows was unfortunate with the conversion. On the thirty-minute mark, and with only five minutes to half time, Bulldogs struck back at the decisive point. Some good teamwork and interchanging of passes resulted in strong running A Richards to score under the HFH posts. Jordan Smart kicked the conversion. With the score line now reading 06 - 12, the whistle was sounded for the end of the first thirty-five minute half. For the second half, Neil substituted the forever-working forward Mike O`Brien for Kyle Nickle, and the first half referee was replaced by second half referee Martin Edwards. It was to be a different side Kyle would face in the second half. The Bulldogs came out fighting for their lives and it appeared as though they had changed breeds during the half time interval. They had upped their game and started playing some nice Rugby League with the ball getting plenty of air and touched by many hands. On the forty-minute mark, Lewis Davies scored out wide but Jordan Smart was unable to convert the try. This made the score line 10 - 12.After forty-five minutes, Neil Brought Kyle and Cleggie off and sent Mike O`Brien back to the field with Jordan Holland. The game was at a point were either side could win the match, with the Bulldogs holding advantage, having crawled their way back into the game.At the forty- five minute point, Neil brought Johan off and put substitute Gibbo on. It appeared as though there was no way of stopping the Bulldogs, as Nial Price crashed over to score for the Bulldogs. Jordan Smart kicked the conversion and the Bulldogs had taken the lead, 16 - 12.On the sixty-minute point, Neil did a three-substitute move and brought off Jack Williams, Mick Bailey and James Hilton. These players were replaced with Jordan Pennington, Kyle Nickle and Cleggie.HFH were determined not to let this one go, even though they were playing against some older and stronger opposition. The Hornets tackling, something that has come on leaps and bounds in 2007 was to prove their most powerful attribute. But first, they had to reclaim the lead off the Bulldogs. In an attacking position deep in the Bulldogs half, Pricey turned a pass back into the supporting Mike O`Brien, who crossed the line near to the Bulldogs sticks. Ryan Gardam claimed the kick, which resulted in a clean conversion and HFH taking the lead again at 16 - 18.In another raid into the Bulldogs half, Ryan Gardam was held up over the line. Retiring back to play the ball, Mike O`Brien was on hand to collect the ball. Selling an outrageous dummy to the defensive line, he cut back inside close to the sticks; to score his second try of the match. Ryan Gardam once again obliged with the conversion and HFH were beginning to dominate again, with the score line now showing 16 - 24.Nearing the end of the seventy-minute period, Gibbo was replaced by Johan. In what proved to be the last action of the game, Pricey put a high kick-in to the corner flag. Giving chase was David Meadows who cleanly caught the falling ball and scored in the corner. As Pricey missed the conversion, Martin Edwards sounded the whistle for full time. Both teams had produced a great Curtain Raiser for the two games to follow and the rest of the day ahead. After shacking hands and exchanging comments, both team vacated the pitch, to make way for the Wales U16?s verses Harlequins U16`s fixture.Throughout the whole of the friendly tour game, all the HFH players were marvelous. Ste Shone at Centre had another blinder of a game and appears to be improving game upon game. James Parle did well, scooting from many of the play the balls positions, and Mike Bailey had another inspiring solid game.Phil Smith was a little at six`s and sevens but put a decent performance in again, while Jack Williams ran and tackled well. Thomas Spencer didn?t get as much of the ball as he would have liked but when he did, he made sure he was able to made good penetration into the Bulldogs defensive lines, David Meadows at Scrumhalf, kept the three quarters supplied with plenty of ball and performed some excellent tackles.Johan had a good game but he is capable of much more; may be the end of the season is catching up? Kyle had a couple of bruising runs but must learn to keep his large mass centre of gravity closer to the ground and avoid getting easily knocked back or toppled over. Both Cleggie and Gibbo also played their contribution to the Hornets win over the Bulldogs after stinting a while as substitutes. All in all, the tour fixture concluded in a positive result and pleasing performance as far as Head Coach Neil Meadows was concerned. With both HFH players and parents provided with food as guests of the Bulldogs, the hospitality was warmly accepted, as were the conversions that took place with various members of the Bulldogs set-up. The Bulldogs presented their "Man of The Match" award (Polo Shirt) to the HFH U14`s Loose Forward Ryan Gardam. In turn, HFH presented the Bulldogs with a HFH club tie, Polo Shirt and a size three-rugby ball for displaying in their trophy cabinet. Both groups accepted their respective gifts with pride. With a one hour fifteen minute journey to the hotel, and check-in still ahead of the HFH tour party, the HFH U14`s left the Bulldogs club after watching part of the second half of the Senior Team game of Bulldogs verses Demons. This was a great experience for the HFH U14`s and parents alike. The whole weekend tour was a total success and hopefully sets the standard for more to come. Here`s hoping that the Blackwood Bulldogs players, parents, fans and Club Officials will be referring to the HFH web site to read what the HFH tour parties impressions were of their club. As far as the HFH U14?s are concerned, the facilities were great and hospitality appreciated.Particular thanks go to Keith Stock and Rob Moss for making all the necessary arrangements for allowing the HFH tour fixture to take place, and to Stuart Hopkins and Roger Moore for their voice on the day. To all the Blackwood Bulldog volunteers who contributed towards providing a great experience for the HFH U14`s, a sincere 'thank you 'and good luck with the building of your junior and youth teams. Finally, another 'thank you' but this time to the two Match Officials, Richard Reece and Martin Edwards. Without these refereeing guys there would be no rugby fixtures to play. And to show how the interaction has already developed between the two clubs, John Goulding, HFH's own referee, managed to sneak out his Match Officials gear when leaving home. His SAS style operation paid off because he volunteered to run one of the touchlines for the Bulldogs verses Demons match and he was more than welcome. Well-done John.
