30 Sep 07, Halton F H v's Atherton Dragons

This was an outstanding display of rugby by the HFH U7's on their debut game at Wilmere Lane Playing Fields.

All seven players showed great skill and determination which was rewarded with two tries going to Ciaran O'Donnell, who was also voted 'Man of the Match'.

Also inspiring were Daniel Miller and Conor Sherlock, who both earned the 'Most improved' award.
The award of 'Top Tackler' went to Jack Burke.

The signs are there for the team to go from strength to strength with more players waiting in the wing.

An evenly fought game saw the HFH U7's pipped by two tries on their second outing of the season.

The work was shared well amongst the seven man side with everyone getting plenty of ball-in-hands.

Daniel Miller, scoring for the second week in a row, impressed but nothing could be taken away from Louie Corker who crossed for four tries.

Jack Burke and Ciaran O'Donnell defended well with Billy Glover taking the lead in organising the defences.

Liam Daniels never took a backwards step and Conor Sherlock showed some impressive footwork going forward.

The HFH U7`s started this fixture very slowly and found themselves three scores down within the first 10 minutes.

Strong running led to a good try for Louie Corker in the first half.

The Hornets players started to play a lot better in the second half and Conor Sherlock scored with a fine solo effort.

Sam Porter and Danny Burke impressed on their debut.

The `Most Improved` player award went to Taylor Hannon, with the `Top Tackler` award going to Conor Sherlock.

Joe Mason picked up a try and also the `Man of the Match` award and this on his debut game for the HFH U7`s.

28 Oct 07, Halton F H v's Burtonwood

Once again the HFH U7's only managed to field an eight man team due to injuries and the holiday period.

A slow start from HFH saw Burtonwood capitalise with a try from an offload in their first set. This stunned the HFH U7`s and gave Burtonwood a massive confidence boost.

Not even an outstanding solo try from Taylor Hannon could lift the HFH team`s confidence and Burtonwood seemed to score at will.

With players coming back from injury and a couple of new faces for next week HFH must put this one aside, and concentrate on next weeks game.

04 Nov 07, Halton F H v's Leigh M R

A much improved performance this week by a strengthened HFH U 7`s fielding a full side with subs for the first time this season.

Both teams were evenly matched with the exception of two experienced Leigh youngsters who scored most of the visitors tries.

The whole team showed a marked improvement on previous weeks in both attack and defence. Sam Walters, on debut, led the way with strong running. His combined running and defensive work seemed to rub off on the rest of the team who found a new confidence and showed the skills learnt from the summer school.

Liam Daniels and Danny Burke made good yards along with Louie Corker, Sam Porter and Billy Glover, with Conor Sherlock, Taylor Hannon, Daniel Miller and Ciaran O'Donnell, all having good all round games.

Joe Mason and Sam Walters impressed with both players scoring well taken and deserved solo effort tries.

11 Nov 07, Halton F H v's Blackbrook

The final score line certainly didn't reflect the amount of effort put in by all thirteen of the HFH U7's squad.

Once again for the Hornets, both teams were evenly matched with the exception of two of the Blackbrook players, who had an excellent turn of speed.

The score line could have been very different if it wasn't for four last gasp tackles by a good Blackbrook defence, which kept some great Hornets attacks out.

The three Hornets scores were great efforts and well deserved, with Louie Corker crossing for one and Joe Mason two.

Ben Phillips was impressive on his debut day but an outstanding effort by Billy Glover earned him the `Man-of-the-Match` award.
The `Top Tackler` award went to Ciaran O'Donnell with `Most Improved` award going to Joe Mason.

With efforts like this a win can't be far away.

18 Nov 07, Atherton Dragons v's Halton F H

The writing's been on the wall for the last few games and today the HFH U7`s masterminded an outstanding victory. Every one of the twelve players contributed to a fine team effort with every individual showing great improvement on previous weeks.

The Hornets made good yardage with strong running on every set of six and backed that up with a great defensive effort.

Sam Walters defensive efforts of eighteen tackles earned him the `Top Tackler` award.
Sam Porters week on week progress earned him a well deserved `Most Improved` award trophy.
Then for an all round display of good rugby league football, Taylor Hannon took the `Man-of-the-Match` award.

The HFH U7's should be proud of themselves with this victory. They should take this new found confidence into the last three fixtures of 2007, before the Christmas break.

Well done to all the players.

02 Dec 07, Leigh East v's Halton F H

On a day for which the weather conditions put pay to many of the scheduled rugby matches, the HFH U7's travelled to Leigh East, in what turned out to be a most enthralling game of junior rugby league.

In the end, a draw was a fair result for both teams, with both sets of parents thoroughly entertained by the performances on the pitch.

The HFH U7''s made good yards through Billy Glover, Liam Daniels, Jack Burke and Ben Catton, who was on his debut game.

This was backed up with some excellent defence from Ciaran O'Donnell, Taylor Hannon and Conor Sherlock.

Most Improved player went to Ben Phillips, who was a whisker away from scoring his first try for the Hornets.
Louie Corker's outstanding defensive efforts earned him Top Tackler, whilst the Man of the Match award was shared between Joe Mason and Sam Porter.

UNDER 8's

23 Sep 07, Leigh Miners Rangers v's Halton F H

HFH U8`s got their season underway with a fixture against Leigh Miners Rangers. The HFH U8`s travelled to Leigh due to the fact that their original fixture against Parkside Golborne was cancelled.

The effort put into today`s performance by the HFH U8`s side was a superb TEAM effort. Every player that took to the field contributed both in attack and defence.

Most pleasing from a coach`s point of view was the HFH defensive line and the ball retention. The defensive line was solid, it was spread and it was loud. Time and time again they forced Leigh Miners into turnovers.

With possession of the ball, the HFH U8`s looked dangerous from the kick-off and they only lost the ball once in the whole game. This was after an excellent off-load was spilled.

HFH scored some cracking tries from all over the field but the Leigh Miners players deserve a huge rap for never throwing the towel-in. They scored two smart tries of their own towards the end of the match.

For the HFH U8`s first real hit out of the season, this was an excellent result. Well done every single player.

30 Sep 07, Halton F H v's Leigh East

Today HFH U8's entertained Leigh East in what was HFH's first home game of the season. As with all home games, HFH utilised their whole squad giving all eighteen players a period of time in the game time.

In the same frame of mind as last week, the HFH discipline and concentration in both defence and attack was very impressive. To stop any team from scoring, no matter what the level of rugby, is a fine achievement.

With the ball HFH threatened the Leigh East line throughout all game. The speed of the 'play-the-ball' made the difference, and time and time again the HFH attackers found holes in the defensive line, as a shear consequence of the quick 'play-the-ball'.

Similar to last week, the HFH scored tries from all over the park. The pick being that of Ben Davies's, Ben only scored because of the work that Thomas Craig got through in the build up to the try. Thomas hit the line at pace and as he approached the last defender he produced an excellent off-load for Ben to finish the move.

Leigh East gave a good account of them selves and as the game went on they produced some excellent runs of their own.

Today was another solid TEAM performance.
Well Done boys.

07 Oct 07, Leigh Miners Rangers v's Halton F H

HFH U8`s travelled to Leigh Miners for the second time this season. Similar to the first visit to Leigh M R, the rugby league on show from both sides was excellent.

After winning the toss, Leigh Miners chose to attack first and from the first set HFH were caught cold out wide. This resulted in Leigh scoring the game's first try of the match. As it worked out, the try was the wake up call that the HFH U8`s needed.

HFH stepped up their game to score three unanswered tries through Ben Davies, Thomas Craig and Jayden Hatton.
Leigh Miners responded on their last set of the half with another score out wide. After excellent work from Nathan Black, Sam Collinson, Jonathan Spruce and Sam McParland, Will Tilleke crashed over for the HFH U8`s right on half time. This made the score line 02 - 04.

At half time HFH made some adjustments in defence to try to stop the threat of Leigh getting around them. All credit goes to every HFH player who responded to what was asked of them; the work effort exerted was justly rewarded with a scoreless second half from Leigh.

The defensive work gave HFH momentum in attack and this enabled Kane Fletcher, Quinn Hughes, Evan Purvis and Harry Smith to make some excellent runs.

The second half produced what was probably the best half the HFH U8`s have played this season. As a result, Evan Purvis (2), Harry Smith, Jayden Hatton and Ben Davies all scored tries.

Today's game was an all round TEAM performance.

14 Oct 07, Halton F H v's Wigan St Cuthberts

HFH U`s played host to Wigan St Cuthbert's for their second home game of the season. As with all home games, the HFH U8`s gave every member of their squad some game time. This week a total of 16 players were used.

The game on the whole was a stop-start affair with neither team taking full advantage of their attacking sets.

The first half was a really tight affair. In attack the Hornets didn`t quite reach the level attained in the last few weeks but even so, they managed to score two tries through Ben Davies and Jayden Hatton.

The HFH defence was off the boil in the first half and St Cuthbert's crossed for three tries of their own. This made the half time score line as 02 - 03.

The second half was a complete turn around especially in defence for HFH. The Hornets kept St Cuthbert's scoreless with some top defensive work right across the park.

With the defence on top, HFH started to get momentum in attack. The whole team attacked as a unit and managed to cross for two tries. Harry Smith and Jonathan Kirby were the benefactor's. This left the full time score board reading 04 - 03.

21 Oct 07, Portico v's Halton F H

HFH U8`s kept up their good run of results with a victory over the much improved Portico Panthers.

The HFH's first half performances haven't quite hit the mark over the last couple of weeks so today the lads were asked to start strongly and keep focused.

In return, the players did exactly what was asked of them with everyone involved working really hard for each other. The HFH defences were on top form and it`s just as well!
The Portico players performed excellent handing skills and didn`t make one single handling error in the whole of the first half.

With possession of the ball HFH caused Portico all sort's of problem. Each player ran hard, straight and when tackled, produced a quick play the ball to keep Portico on the back foot.

Today, all the 12 players who travelled to Portico played a magnificent team game and they deserved the huge praise expressed to them when the match had finished.

A very big `Well Done` to all concerned.

28 Oct 07, Halton F H v's Newton Storm

HFH U8`s today took on Newton Storm and the weather conditions were totally different to anything which the present HFH U8`s have encountered so far this season.

That was all thanks to a night of torrential rain which produced conditions under foot which were very difficult.

Considering these conditions, the standard of rugby on show was outstanding.

The HFH U8`s ball retention was brilliant and only once did they knock on.

Once again though, it was HFH's defensive work that laid the platform for another victory. All the players really worked so hard at keeping their line intact.

Today was another top all round team performance but credit must also go to Newton Storm who played their part in today's game.

The HFH U8`s had an away fixture today, and they didn`t disappoint the array of travelling parents.

In a well disciplined and systematic manner, the Hornets set about their normal game and performed admirably.

All the HFH U8`s squad are thoroughly enjoying their rugby on a Sunday morning, and it has become the pinnacle of the weekend activities. This has created a great squad of players, with `team-work`, `fun` and `enjoyment` being at the heart of this team.

Well done boys for another great team performance.

11 Nov 07, Halton F H v's Wigan St Patricks

On this Remembrance Sunday, both sets of players held a minutes silence before today's game, which was respectively observed by the whole of both teams, the coaches and the parent's/spectators.

The HFH U8`s took on Wigan St Patrick's in what turned out to be an outstanding game of U8`s rugby.

All 17 players played their part in today's game.

The first half was a tense affair with the defences of both on top. The only try in the first half came from the visitors with a strong run on HFH's left hand side. This made the half time score line 00 - 01.

The second half began in the same mode as the first with both defences remaining equally on top. But then, up pops Ben Davies who scored an outstanding individual try when he outpaced a whole host of St Patrick defenders, to score HFH's first try of the game.

This try gave the home side a huge lift, with the HFH defences gaining the upper hand in that department. This lead to more confidence in the HFH team and they started to make yards with ball.

Jayden Hatton was the main benefactor. On the back of a quick play the ball, Jayden crossed for a magnificent hat-trick of tries.

As a team, HFH U8`s are learning all the time and today's lesson was `be patient`, The St Pat's defensive line was probably the best the Hornets have come up against so far this season,

All the HFH players had to work hard and dig deep for one another in this tough match. It took the HFH team longer than normal to break down the solid St Pats defences.

As the game wore on the attacking skills of the Hornets started to show.

Both sets of players put on a great show for all the spectators and parents.

Well done to you all.

18 Nov 07, Waterhead v's Halton F H

The HFH U8`s were on the road for this fixture, away to Waterhead. On arrival the condition's can only be described as arctic, with a cold freezing wind and pelting down rain.

Fortunately for both sides, the rain had eased when kick off time came round but the wind chill made conditions very, very difficult for all the players

The prevailing weather conditions determined the type of play required and the HFH U8`s chose a safety first game. With tight hands, they retained the ball and ensured they kept it safe throughout the whole of the game.

With ball retention, the Hornets scored some great tries from all over the field.

The HFH U8`s defence was also once again on top form, and with every player on the pitch contributing, the Hornets managed to keep Waterhead scoreless.

The severity of the conditions meant that at half time, some of Waterhead player's couldn't return to the pitch for the second half.

Both sets of coaches and parents would like to thank Hornets players Quinn Hughes and Harry Smith for equalling the playing numbers, and turning out for Waterhead in the second half.

Today, every player on the pitch, from both sides, proved that they were the ultimate winners. They defeated the weather conditions to put on a performance which they should all be proud of.

Well done to both sets of players.

25 Nov 07, Halton F H v's Saddleworth Rangers

This Sunday HFH U8`s took on Saddleworth at Wilmere Lane, and with both teams having large squads; it was s a perfect opportunity for all players to have a run out.

Before the start of the game, both sets of players, coaches and spectator's conducted the minute applause in memory of Mike Gregory.

Right from the start, the HFH U8`s showed that they meant business by forcing Saddleworth into turnovers time after time.

Every player contributed in their defensive work, which from a coach`s point of view is very pleasing. With the ball the Hornets were outstanding and once again they scored tries from all over the park.

Today's performance was a fabulous TEAM effort with everyone working hard for one another.

Credit also goes to the Saddleworth players who never gave up and managed to cross for a couple of tries late on in the second half.

10 Feb 08, Latchford Unicorns v's Halton F H

HFH U8's finally got back into action after an extended winter break, which stretched all the way back to 25th November 2007, this been the date on which they played their last game of rugby.

For their first game of the 2008 year, the HFH U8’s travelled the short distance to Latchford Unicorns, Warrington.

Weather and pitch wise, the conditions were ideal for rugby league.

Without having a game for so long, this game could have potentially been a tough encounter against a large and well organized Latchford side.

None of the travelling HFH parents/supporters needed to have worried as each and every player that stepped foot on to the field produced an excellent all round performance.

Whether in defence or attack, the HFH U8’s team was relentless.

Full marks go to Latchford Unicorns who worked hard throughout the whole game and never gave up trying.

24 Feb 08, Oldham St Annes v's Halton F H

The HFH u8’s travelled to Oldham St Anne’s in what was only their second game of 2008.

The weather on route to Oldham was rather wet to say least but thank heavens for small mercies, as come game time, the rain had relented.

Today's performance was another brilliant team showing and right across the board each player worked their socks off.

Defensively the HFH U8’s were really solid, only once in the whole game did St Anne’s manage to breach the line. The mindset of the players when defending is something to marvel.

In attack, over the last few weeks, the team has been working on using the ball and today saw all their efforts come to fruition. A number of today's tries were scored after the ball had gone through several pairs of hands.

HFH played some lovely rugby today in tough conditions.

Thanks to St Anne’s for their hospitality and thanks to our parents and supports for making the trip and being so supportive.

A special mention goes to Calum O'Neill who made his HFH debut. Calum played excellently.

02 Mar 08, Halton F H v's Wigan St Judes

HFH U8’s played their first home game of 2008, when they played hosts to Wigan St Jude’s. And a decent sized crowd had gathered to watch these two strong sides take to the field.

After winning the toss, HFH U8’s decided to attack and played into a very strong wind. HFH started brilliantly when Ben Davies burst through the St Jude’s defensive line on the very first play to score a great try.

That devastating early try had two effects. Firstly, HFH switched off and as a result they failed to complete any of their next four set.

Secondly, St Jude’s responded by tightening up their defence and to score 3 unanswered tries of their own, to bring the half time whistle and a score line of 09 – 03.

During the half time interval, the HFH Players and coaches had a chat about ball control and their defensive line. Every player in the second half responded to what was asked of them. They worked really hard in both defence and attack.

With the team working as a unit, Ben Davies completed his hat-trick and Harry Smith powered over to make it four tries a piece.

Both teams’s had one set to go as time was running out. On their last set, St Jude’s managed to force their way over with a forth tackle scoot.

Unfortunately, the HFH U8’s couldn't make use of their last set, and the game finished 04 - 05 in favour of St Jude’s.

Today's game was an excellent advert for U8’s rugby league which was played in tough windy conditions.

From the HFH u8’s point of view, all coaches, parents and supporters are proud of the lad's efforts. At 01 - 03 down, they could have buckled but they stayed in the’ arm-wrestle’ and were unlucky to lose.

30 Mar 08, Moorfield v's Halton F H

HFH U8’s got back into action today after a four week lay-off, and for today’s game they travelled to Moorfield in what was the HFH U8’s first experience of a local derby.

It turned out that the game was an outstanding advertisement for U8’s rugby. Both defences worked superbly but more impressive was the ball retention of both teams.

In attack, HFH played it nice and steady early on with Jonathan Spruce, Nathan Black, Callum Tollitt and Sam Collinson making good yard's by getting a roll on.

Defensively, HFH's line was solid throughout, Evan Purvis, Kane Fletcher, Will Tilleke, Nathan Gollins and Calum O'Neill worked hard in keeping Moorfield out.

HFH crossed for four tries today, Harry Smith scored three and Thomas Craig got the other.

Credit to Moorfield who scored a fine try of their own.

The HFH U8’s continued their winning ways when close neighbours, Clock Face, visited Wilmere Lane Sports Ground.

With the sunshine working wonders in melting the snow away, the HFH U8’s put in a fine performance against a strong Clock Face side.

Both sides played some terrific rugby considering the conditions. Although the parents might have been feeling cold, the Hornets and Clock Face players just got down to business.

This was a great win of the HFH U8’s but appreciation must also be shown to Clock Face who fought a true spirited game.

This was a true team effort by all the Hornets players and it shows that a strong bond is starting to develop amongst the squad.

20 Apr 08, Halton F H v's Rylands

After last weekend’s blank fixture date, the HFH U8's got back in action today when they entertained near neighbours Ryland’s.

Today, all the players took to the field with one main objective, and that was to play to their strengths.. As a result, HFH probably played their best all round TEAM performance of the season so far.

The defence on show was outstanding with everyone working so hard to keep Ryland’s out. With the HFH defence on top, Ryland’s only managed to cross for two tries late on in the second half.

In attack HFH scored some cracking tries. The most pleasing today in attack was the way in which the HFH U8’s ran onto the ball and this running caused Ryland’s defence to always be on the back foot.

A special mention must go to Calum O'Neill who crossed for his first try in the HFH colours.

Well done to all concerned.

What a game!

This eagerly awaited game between two strong teams didn’t fail to disappoint. In wet and wild conditions both teams played some brilliant rugby.

From a HFH point of view every player that took to the field can be so proud of their efforts .

With the weather being as it was, HFH u8’s kept their attack's nice and simple hoping to minimise any mistakes.

Both sets of defences worked really hard today. Right across the board all Hornets players contributed to their defensive duties.

The game was an absolute belter. Congratulations go to all involved.

04 May 08, Burtonwood v's Halton F H

HFH U8’s travelled the short distance to Burtonwood for their last away fixture of the season.

Due to holidays and illness, the HFH U8’s only travelled with NINE players.

Yet again, the weather was rotten with the rain pouring down most of the time. The Hornets started nicely and with an emphasis on steadily getting through their sets. As a result, the HFH U8’s crossed for four more tries.

The Hornets defences were water tight and time after time, the HFH U8’s players once again forced Burtonwood to turn the ball over on the last tackle.

At halftime, a decision was made to leave the HFH U8’s team on the field without their coach for the second half.

And oh boy, what a show they put on!

Every single player was well organised with players listening to each other and everyone working brilliantly for one another.

The second half produced five more tries, with Richard Hartley grabbing his first try in HFH colours.

All the parents and coaches were really impressed with what they had witnessed in that illustrious second half.

18 Nov 07, Halton F H v's Thatto Heath

HFH U9`s took on Thatto Heath in an encounter that whetted the appetite of both players and coaches.

Thanks to a night of constant rain, the pitch soon cut up through the middle. This would prove to be an added factor in the efforts and endurance needed by the players in this fixture. In good old fashioned terms, this was going to be a slog.

Considering the conditions however, the standard of rugby produced was brilliant and appreciated by the parents and spectators.

From the kickoff, HFH made good distance with Josh Wainwright making good yards and Kenny Curlett keeping the team straight through the middle. Liam Davies did well to 'dance' around a couple of defenders to keep up the momentum.

It was Thatto that took the lead part way through the first half with a pushover try. HFH though, with vociferous support from their parents, soon evened the score with Jack Gatcliffe going over from close to the line.

With scores even for some time it was clear something had to give, and it was Thatto that put on another score close to half time.

Thatto increased their lead soon after half time but the HFH players never gave up hope and it was Jack Jolley who went over to narrow the gap.

Despite the final score line, this was another top all round team performance by the HFH U9's. The team continues to get better and better week after week, showing massive improvements in each new game.

25 Nov 07, Wigan St Patricks v's Halton F H

The HFH U9`s travelled to Wigan St Patrick`s in the knowledge that they were in for a difficult game.

The game was preceded by a well deserved round of applause for ex Wigan St Patrick`s stalwart Mike Gregory. Both players and parents from HFH enthusiastically took part in this show of respect for one of the games greats.

Both teams started strongly but it was Wigan St Pats who took an eight point lead half way through the first half.

However, with some powerful attacking from Stuart Tyghe and Kenny Curlett, HFH`s efforts were rewarded with a try from Jack Jolley.

A couple of unforced errors from HFH though saw Wigan St Pats extend their lead but it was Jack Jolley again who worked hard to go over to half the lead.

The score remained static for quite some time in the second half before Wigan St Pats, through using their big pack, took hold of the game which was to prove decisive in the long run.

The HFH U9`s gamely battled on with strong runs from Jack Gatcliffe and Jon Gray even when the game was out reach. Josh Wainwright who never gave up running tried to use the width of the pitch only to be brought down just short of the line.

Congratulations to both teams for a fair well played game.

A word of praise also must go to the referee supplied by Wigan St Pats who was fair to both sides.

27 Jan 08, Halton F H v's Shaw

This was the Hornets U9's first game back after the winter break so it was a good occasion to try out some new techniques they'd been working on during indoor training.

The game started brightly with both teams vying for territorial position through the middle of the park. Good yards were made by Charlie McDonnell and Jack Phillips but with a few unforced errors by both teams, this kept the scores even.

Alex Highcock opened up the scoring for the U9's by using the width of the pitch as Shaw bunched together leaving  the right wing un-defended.

Jack Jolley and Jack Gatcliffe both worked hard to increase the lead just before half time.

Just as the game might have turned into a procession, Shaw scored a well worked try down the blind side to cut the deficit. However, with some ne wlegs on for the second half and in the shape of HFH dubutant daniel Munro, the U9's scored in the corner with the first of a brace of tries bagged by Jon Gray.

Josh Wainwright skipped through a tired Shaw defence to increase the lead with the final word going to Jack Gatcliffe who ran almost full length to grab his second.

With some new players in the squad this was a great way for the U9's to start of 2008.

03 Feb 08, Wigan St Patricks v's Halton F H

The Hornets U9's travelled over to Wigan for the second time in three matches in a game that should have been a reversed home fixture but with all home fixtures postponed due to water logged pitches, the only other alternative would have been a cancelled fixture.

The FHF U9's and their supportive parents decided to honour the contest with an early morning kick-off. This team just love their Rugby League!

The game got off to an early scoring start with the St Pats going twelve points up after the first ten minutes. HFH never gave up trying though and were soon rewarded with a well worked try by Alex Highcock.

Some good running by Stuart Tyghe and Jack Phillips kept up the momentum going and with the ball travelling through several pairs of hands; it found Jack Gatcliffe who worked his way over in the corner, to grab his first of two for the day.

HFH put on some new legs for the second half in the shape of Little Alex Curlett who immediately asserted himself with a brilliant covering try saving tackle only for the attacker to reach over the line.

The closing stages of the game saw St. Pats endure some heavy pressure by the HFH pack with Kenny Curlett, Jack Jolley and Charlie McDonnell all going close. The ball was then worked out to Josh Wainwright to touch down out wide.

The game was played in a great-spirit with all credit to the St. Pats team for another hard fought contest. Their coach commented after the match that they'd not come up against tougher opposition this season.

24 Feb 08, Halton F H v's Atherton Dragons

The HFH U9's travelled to Atherton with a strong squad as well as a debutant player in the team.

As it turned out, this fixture resulted in an evenly matched game but it was the HFH U9’s who started the brighter of the two sides, when Jack Gatcliffe went in at the corner.

The Hornets put together a few good moves with Kenny Curlett and his brother little Alex, combining well to set up Jon Gray to work his way over the line.

After Jack Gatcliffe extended the lead further, it was the Dragons turn to show some good moves to narrow the score.

The second half saw some interchanges for HFH with big Danny Munro and James Owens coming on as replacements as well as Cameron Hanley for his first taste of big time Amateur Rugby League.

The ball was used well on the last tackle to see Charlie McDonnell squirm over near the corner to bag two tries for the day. Jack Gatcliffe who worked well all game, grabbed his third soon after.

Josh Wainwright, who was knocking on the try scoring door all game, went over for a well deserved try and it was good to see Stuart Tyghe get back to try scoring ways.

The Dragons to their credit never gave up and it was they who had the final word with a long range effort just in time for the final whistle.

Another great attacking performance by the U9's who just need to work on their defences qualities to shore-up any deficiencies in this area.

Well done lads.

02 Mar 08, Blackbrook v's Halton F H

If you're going to save your best performance of the season (so far), you're going to want to do it against one of the best teams in the league. Today was the day when it all clicked into place.

In bright sunshine but with a strong, biting wind, it was HFH who kicked off. After a few unforced errors by both teams it was Blackbrook who managed to get over the whitewash first only to see the referee cancel out the score through improper grounding of the ball. It was the wake-up call HFH needed to get their game started.

It was the U9's who got the scoring going with a well worked try down the blind side to see Jack Gatcliffe going in for his first of five visits to the try line.

Blackbrook evened up the game only to see HFH go down the other end with JG again proving too strong for the defenders, to barge over. And with fine ball handling by Jack Phillips and forward work from Kenny Curlett, it was inevitable for JG to go in his hat-trick.

Jack Jolley, who proved to be a thorn in the Blackbrook side all game, got himself on the score sheet to extend the HFH lead just before half-time.

The second half saw some clever interchanges by the HFH coaches with Danny Munro and James Owens coming on as well as Thomas Attwood coming back on after a first half injury.

They combined well with Stuart Tyghe, to get the ball out to Alex Highcock who raced half the length of the field only to be felled just short of the line. However, a quick play of the ball saw Jack Phillips crash over.

Josh Wainwright got himself on the score sheet after some neat footwork near the line.

Blackbrook always threatened the HFH line but it was the 100% effort and the demon-like tackling by the U9's that never made anything other than victory a reality.

This was a great all-round team performance that, on this special day, did their parents very proud.

As one parent put it “they did it for their Mums”.

09 Mar 08, Crosfields v's Halton F H

The U9's traveled the short distance to Crosfields Cobras off the back of two fine victories and so were in  confident spirits going into this game.

The game started well with both teams producing some good sets of six but it was Crosfields who went over to open up the scoring.

HFH though replied immediately through a well worked try by Jack Gatcliffe after some strong drives by Josh Wainwright and Jack Phillips.

The HFH U9's enjoyed a purple-patch with Jack Jolley going over and Jack Gatcliffe grabbing his second.

HFH had to withstand some sustained attacking play by Crosfields but held their line well with some classic covering tackles by little Alex Curlett, Jon Gray and Kenny Curlett.

However, Crosfields pulled one back just on half-time with a well worked try out on the blind side.

After some interchanges during half time, which saw the introduction of James Owens, Danny Munro and Charlie McDonnell, the second half saw the two teams trading tries throughout.

Tommy Attwood, scored his first try since returning to the team with a push over try close to the line and Jack Jolley and Jack Gacho added to their totals.

Crosfields always threatened to 'even the game up' but Charlie McDonnell put the game to bed with a scoot on the last tackle to go over.

Danny Simpson and Cameron Hanley came off the bench to put in sterling service with some top tackles as the HFH U9's still had to do some defending on the last set-of-six but were able to hold out to claim a well earned victory.

A two week break due to the SRL Games and the Easter holidays now beckons so let’s hope they can keep up the momentum for the next few crucial games.

A final word of praise must go to the Crosfields set-up. The pitch and spectator area was very well set out (even to the point of setting up mini posts much to the excitement of the boys). Their team were very friendly towards both HFH team and parents, and to the referee who managed a fair game throughout. Well done Crosfields.

13 Apr 08, Halton F H v's Leigh M R

This was the first game back for the HFH U9's after a five week break due to Easter and several postponed matches. Both coaches and spectators were keen to see if they could get straight back to winning ways after the great run of performances they'd been displaying recently.

The game couldn't have started any better with Jack Gatcliffe going in on the first set-of-six to get HFH off to the perfect start. Jack Gatcliffe soon doubled the U9's total when he finished off a smart move which saw some classic forward drives from Kenny Curlett and Alex Highcock.

HFH and LMR then traded tries with Jack Gatcliffe getting his hat-trick after having a previous effort ruled out and Charlie McDonnell scooting under the defenders to score from close range.

The game looked done and dusted when Jack Gatcliffe and Charlie McDonnell again added to their totals for the day to make the score 28 - 16 but LMR had other ideas.

After staging a great comeback to level up the scores, both teams then endured several sets-of-six that saw some of the best attacking and defending Rugby League that can be found at junior level.

Both teams did their utmost best to snatch the game with some strong drives from Tommy Attwood, Danny Munro and James Owens. This was matched by the do-or-die defending by Kenny Curlett and little Alex Curlett, Stu Tyghe and Jack Phillips.

However, both teams were determined not to lose this game, which finally ended up at 28 - 28. A fair, and probably correct, final result in the end.

Well done to both teams.

Thanks also to the Leigh MR referee who managed a fair game throughout.

And just a final word for Stuart Tyghe:

He received a very hard knock to the nose which resulted in a bad nose-bleed. Initial fears were that he'd broken his nose but it was revealed that he had just a bad knock. Keep smiling Stu.

20 Apr 08, Newton v's Halton F Hl

The HFH U9's travelled over to Newton to face a rather depleted opposition who could only field 8 first team players.

The game still went ahead with HFH having the luxury of almost having 'two teams' to play with, given the number of players in the squad.

Jack Gatcliffe continued his prolific try scoring season with another try early in the game. Josh Wainwright doubled the score soon after with a wingers try along the line, and Jack Jolley increased the lead just before half time.

A lot of inter-changes brought on many fresh legs for the second-half, but it was Newton Storm who got on the score sheet first.

Josh Wainwright steadied the ship with another try but it was Storm who again went over to half the deficit.

All players involved in today’s fixture did their respective side credit. There was plenty of fine attacking play and textbook type tackling from both clubs.

Well done to both teams.

27 Apr 08, Halton F H v's Wigan St Cuthberts

For the second week running, the HFH U9's faced a team that could only field eight first team players.

Overnight rain made the conditions sticky but the rugby on show still provided good entertainment.

The HFH U9's opened the scoring with a Josh Wainwright try, which was immediately cancelled out by a Wigan effort.

Jack Gatcliffe saw a gap to break the defensive line to grab his first of three tries for the day.

Danny Simpson added to the score but Wigan always managed to get on the score sheet to make this a close affair.

Stuart Tyghe did a fantastic 'Keiron Cunningham' on the final tackle to grab a rare and well deserved try.

Kenny Curlett did his utmost to keep the advantage in the HFH camp by producing some great textbook tackling and off loads to Jack Phillips, who kept the ball alive.

But St. Cuthbert's to their credit, never let the game get out of reach and with a lapse in the HFH concentration,  it was WSC who clawed themselves back into the game with a match-drawing try on the final set-of-six.

HFH U9's were fantastic for thirty five minutes of this game but need to realise soon that the game lasts right through to the final whistle.

04 May 08, Langworthy v's Halton F H

The HFH U9's travelled over to Salford to play a full strength Langworthy Reds team. Both teams agreed, as a pre-cursor to next season, to play the game as an eleven-a-side game so as to get both teams used to playing with more team members on the pitch.

The conditions and pitch were not the best but the game started well with both teams producing some good sets of six but it was Langworthy who went over first to open up the scoring.

HFH though were knocking on the door with every drive with Josh Wainwright having an effort ruled out, being pushed into touch as he reached over the try line.

However, HFH got on the score sheet with a last tackle crash-over try by Man of the Match Kenny Curlett after some neat drives by Jack Philips and Stuart Tyghe.

After some interchanges during half time which saw the introduction of little Alex Curlett and Thomas Atwood, HFH put together some great ball play but it was the Reds who increased their lead.

Jack Gatcliffe got the HFH U9’s within one score of the Reds total with a great run out to the right flank, going over with Reds defenders closing in.

With the clock running down, Hornets threw everything they had at Langworthy with the U9's going close on many occasions but even after some really great inter-plays by both teams, it was the Reds who held out for a well earned win.

THE CROSFIELDS ARLFC RUGBY LEAGUE INVITATION TOURNAMENT

Hosted by Crosfields arlfc on Sunday 28th June 2008

Invited were the HFH U9’s (season 2007/08)

Game One

HFH U9’s opened their first game with a hard fought victory over Langworthy Reds.
The final score of HFH (U9’s) 04 verses Langworthy Reds (U9’s) 00 reflected on the competitiveness of the game.
Jack Gatcliffe was the try scorer.

Game Two

Opening this game with some conviction, the Hornets continued to strive and improve on their first game, with a neat performance against Warrington side Latchford.
Hornets ended up also winning this game with a score line of HFH (U9’s) 16 verses Latchford (U9’s) 04.
Try scorers were Charlie McDonnell, Jack Gatcliffe (one each), with Josh Wainwright running two tries in.

Game Three

This was the one worth waiting for!
An outstanding effort was contributed by all the players, and which resulted in another victory but this time against the host team Crosfields.
The final score read HFH (U9’s) 12 verses Crosfields (U9’s) 08.
Try scorers were Daniel Simpson, Alex Highcock and Stuart Tyghe.

Game Four

The young Hornets completed their Tournament rout with a convincing win against Culcheth.
The final score was HFH (U9’s) 12 verses Culcheth (U9’s) 00.
There was a superb seventy yard and well deserved try for James Owen. This was his first try for the HFH Club, and hopefully the start of many more to come.
Josh Wainwright scored his hat trick in the tournament, while Jack Gatcliffe also ran up an outstanding hat trick of tries.

HFH U9’s Players:
Jack Gatcliffe, Jack Phillips, Alex Curlett, Kenny Curlett, Josh Wainwright, Daniel Simpson, Charlie McDonnell, Stuart Tyghe, James Owen Alex Highcock.

This was an all round and outstanding effort from all the players who will be stepping up to the HFH U10’s for forthcoming season 2008/2009.

After only returning to training a fortnight ago, the players’ fitness, determination and all round eagerness to win was pretty evident for all to see.

This was a proud day for the HFH Club, the players themselves, the coaching staff and of course all the parents.

It was another close match for the HFH U11`s this Sunday, and like last week, it was a game which ended up with a drawn result once again.

St Cuthbert`s scored early on in the game but the Hornets fought back with Adam Kirby scoring two successive tries.

St Cuthbert`s went on to score another two tries before half time. Not to be out-done, the HFH U11`s in the form of Zac Riley and Adam Kirby, also scored two fine tries to put the Hornets in the lead at half time.

During the second half both teams continued to battle on and matched each other try for try. Jack White steamed rollered over the Cuthbert`s try line to equalise the scores in the last remaining minutes of the game.

04 Nov 07, Oldham St Annes v's Halton F H

HFH U11`s travelled to Oldham in what turned out to be a very well contested game, with both sides playing really well.

Unfortunately, the size of the pitch did not lend itself to open rugby and therefore the Hornets normal game of open rugby was squashed. The low score-line was also attributable to the restricted pitch.

With both sides cancelling each other out in most areas of play, this game could have swung either way but unfortunately, lady luck was on St Anne`s side today.

This was a great team performance from the HFH U11`s and each player gave one hundred percent. In fact both teams participated in a great game of rugby. Well done to you all.

Following last weeks narrow defeat the HFH U11`s bounced back today with an excellent all round team performance. This resulted in a resounding and comfortable victory.

23 Sep 07, Leigh Miners Rangers v's Halton F H

HFH U13`s travelled to Leigh on Sunday for their first match of the season fielding six debutants to go with the remaining nine players who stayed loyal to the club after a summer of turmoil and doubt.

The Hornets opened like a whirlwind and were unlucky to score only the one converted try through Alex Clare.

The Miners gradually clawed their way back into the game and defensive errors from the HFH U13`s allowed the hosts to score two quick fire tries giving them an 08 - 06 interval lead.

HFH U13`s began the second period firing on all cylinders. Great attacking play by the forwards had the Miners defending for long periods. From one such attack the Hornets regained the lead when great hands from Dean Ainsworth and Sam McGrory found Alex Clare who finished superbly. The conversion attempt was missed.

Then came the try of the match when 'Man-of-the-Match', Alex Clare, picked up the ball from the base of the scrum and sprinted 90 metres for a fantastic hat-trick try under the posts.

At 16 - 08 and only ten minutes remaining HFH relaxed their grip on the game and the Miners drew level with another two scores after some woeful tackling.

HFH faced an onslaught from Leigh but tried vainly to hang on. Then Jordan Maddocks was sent to the sin-bin after an alleged punch in the tackle. From the resultant penalty Leigh Miners crossed to make the score 20 - 16.

HFH hit back with determination and almost stole the points with Tom Murtha and Adam Murphy both going close but with two tackles remaining in the set the referee blew the whistle for full time.

30 Sep 07, Halton F H v's Higginshaw

In only their second outing of the season HFH U13`s put on a much improved performance against high flying Higginshaw. With another two new players joining the ranks to add to last weeks six debutants, a lack of cohesion was to be expected but the effort of the players was 100%.

HFH succumbed to a soft try in the 5th minute when the Higginshaw full-back scooted over on the last tackle. HFH hit back on twelve minutes to take the lead with Alex Clare racing the length of the field to score under the posts.

HFH held out a prolonged attack on their line with several attackers being `held-up` over the line by an excellent scrambling defence. The Oldham side persisted and eventually got two further tries.

HFH U13`s suffered a blow when towards half time, Alex Clare left the field with a hand injury. However, the Hornets finished the first half stronger but were unable to improve their tally leaving the score line reading 06 - 14.

Higginshaw registered the first try of the second half when their big centre cut through the middle and finished in style. HFH answered back when Dean Ainsworth put `Man-of-the-match' Tom Murtha over on the left.

Higginshaw`s centre got another try before Sam Osbourne crashed over from an Ainsworth offload. At 16 - 28, the Hornets sniffed a comeback but it was not to be. Despite a valiant effort, Higginshaw ran away with the game in the closing stages.

Sam Osbourne won the Coaches` Award with Sam McGrory the pick of the backs.

07 Oct 07, Chorley Panthers v's Halton F H

Alex Clare was the hero for HFH U13`s with a hat-trick of tries that earned him the `Man-of-the-Match` award.

The general display by the Hornets however was far from a one man show with Sam McGrory (Coaches` Award), Adam Murphy, Dean Ainsworth, Tom Murtha and Joe Kelly constantly tormenting third placed Panthers.

HFH produced the first score on four minutes after a great midfield run by Murphy who offloaded superbly to the supporting McGrory to power his way over the line, the conversion was unsuccessful.

Chorley`s big pack was dominated by the Hornets six who tackled manfully setting up the platform for several sweeping ball movements. One such attack found Alex Clare wide out on the left, and from then on, his speed did the rest for another unconverted try.

A lapse of concentration allowed the Panthers to stay in touch on the last play of the half with Chorley`s Outside Centre being awarded a try despite several tacklers in attendance.

Five minutes into the second period and HFH stretched their lead to 14 - 04 when good hands from Murtha and Ainsworth found Clare who grabbed his second try.

The Hornets, playing without replacements, started to tire and when Chorley brought on fresh legs they started to gain momentum. A few repeat sets and a succession of penalties allowed the Panthers to constantly batter the Hornets line. Despite holding them out on several occasions they eventually cracked as Chorley`s substitute forwards crossed twice to level the scores.

The Hornets dug deep and took the game back to the Panthers. Good runs from Jonny Wood, Ainsworth, Jordan Maddocks and Jay Jones gave HFH the initiative from which Alex Clare struck.

Taking the ball from the base of the scrum on the left, he outpaced the Chorley three quarters, rounded the full back, and finished superbly to the right of the posts to clinch the game.

14 Oct 07, Halton F H v's Thatto Heath Crusaders

HFH U13`s opened this game in style with some entertaining rugby and raced into a 12 - 00 lead in the first ten minutes.

Alex Clare continued his record of scoring in every match with a well taken try on three minutes after fast hands down the line. Sam Osbourne was the next to go over by the posts after he set up the position with a fantastic break earlier in the set.

The game swung Thatto Heath?s way when the Hornets relaxed in defence and invited Thatto back into the contest. Weak tackling allowed the Crusaders to take control with three tries and lead at half-time 12-14.

In the second half, Jordan Maddocks regained the lead for the Hornets when he powered over from short range after another flowing move.
A few mistakes from HFH gave Thatto field position and despite heroic tackling from the home side, the pressure eventually told with a score to the visitors.

The Crusaders onslaught continued as they pressed for the next try. The Hornets however fought back and defended their line superbly. The initiative now belonged to the Hornets and after an excellent clearing run from Alex Clare, it was `Man-of- the-Match`, Dean Ainsworth, who created an opening for Sam McGrory to romp over the try line to take the score to 20 - 18.

Soon after, Tom Murtha reached over to score a try and secured victory in the dying seconds with a stepping run from acting half back.

Great performances from Ainsworth, Clare, McGrory, Tom Murtha and Osbourne crowned another great win for a team still in the rebuilding process. With another four players to join the ranks in the coming weeks, the future looks bright.

LANCASHIRE CUP COMPETITION - First Round

HFH U13`s played hosts to Premier division side Wigan St. Patricks (WSP) in this Lancashire Cup Competition - Round One match, and Hornets marched through to the Second Round with a top notch performance.

The opening exchanges were fairly even but it was the Hornets who took the lead on eight minutes when Sam McGrory put in an astute kick for Jordan Maddocks to score on the right, Tom Murtha added the extra points.

A skirmish between two players ended with both being sent to the sin bin and a penalty being awarded to the visitors ten metres out. Quick thinking from the St Pats stand-off allowed him to grab a try in the corner the goal attempt fell short.

A penalty for offside by WSP enabled the Hornets to push up field and after a great drive from Sam Osbourne, it was Dean Ainsworth who sliced through to score a try the conversion was unsuccessful.

Successive penalties to WSP put them in a good position and with minutes of the first half remaining a great cross-field kick to the winger put them back in the game at 10 - 08.

Playing downhill in the second half, HFH U13`s took the game to Wigan St Pats. The Hornets pack dominated the bigger Wigan outfit and coupled with a great defensive effort, laid the platform for an excellent attacking display, registering five more tries to the visitors nil.

Sam McGrory found Tom Murtha with a deft kick into space and the much improved second rower romped over on the left for a six pointer.

Alex Clare then went over for a brace of tries in the space of five minutes, one after good hands from Ainsworth and Murtha and his second; a fine long range solo effort, both kicks were missed.

The visitors seeing the game slipping away started to lose their discipline and gave away silly penalties, handing the initiative to the Hornets from which they hammered home the victory.

Dean Ainsworth claimed his second dummying his way over from a lovely set piece move. Sam McGrory added the extras.

Sam Osbourne scored the final try in the corner after a powerful run to the line knocking off several defenders. Dean Ainsworth landed the goal.

28 Oct 07, Halton F H v's Shevington Sharks

HFH U13`s escaped from the jaws of defeat to secure their fourth consecutive win on Sunday at Wilmere Lane.

In a game of two halves, it was Shevington Sharks who started in whirlwind fashion and HFH struggled to contain their attack. The visitors` big full-back crossed for two unconverted tries in the opening five minutes as the Hornets looked disorganised in defence.

HFH gradually clawed their way back into the game put couldn`t register any points, frustratingly playing catch up football and pushing the pass in impossible situations.

Adam Murphy was the closest to score with a great charge only to pop out an unexpected offload, which was knocked on after being held up just inches short of the line. A good break from Dean Ainsworth was totally lacking in support and the chance was lost. Alex Clare went on a sixty metre dash as players stood back expecting a score but the Sharks scrambling defence swallowed him up.

Errors from the Hornets took the pressure off Shevington and they responded with a converted try from the scrum half after a missed tackle in midfield, to finish the half leading fourteen points to nil.

The Hornets fight back began when Man-of-the-Match, Tom Murtha, scored a great try out wide but the kick drifted in front of the uprights.

Strong running Alex Clare was the next to score after the Hornets successfully repelled a Shark attack. Taking the ball from the base of the scrum, Alex raced ninety metres to score under the sticks. Dean Ainsworth added the extras.

Terrific tackling, lead superbly by loose forward Dean Ainsworth (Coaches` Award), knocked the fight out of the Sharks, and HFH completely dominated proceedings.

Tom Murtha put the supporting Jonny Wood over after a break down the right to level the scores at fourteen all, before grabbing his second on a similar run to give the Hornets the advantage and lead for the first time.

Shevington tried vainly to rescue the points and a dangerous kick into space was collected gratefully by Wayne Lawless.

The Hornets secured victory with three minutes remaining when Sam McGrory made a strong break and fed Jonny Wood who finished brilliantly under the sticks. Dean Ainsworth was successful with the conversion.

LANCASHIRE CUP COMPETITION - Second Round

The referee surprisingly gave the go ahead for this fixture, as HFH played hosts to Premier Division Pilkington Recs, in thick fog.

Missing four regular players through illness, it proved to be a tough ask for the home side as they went down 12 - 00.

Pilkington Recs scored a try in each half to go through to the next round of the cup, as the Hornets struggled to find their recent form.

Dean Ainsworth (`Man-of-the-Match`), Alex Clare (Coaches' Award), Sam McGrory, Adam Murphy, Tom Murtha and Jonny Wood, all battled bravely in a below par Hornets performance.

11 Nov 07, Halton F H v's Leigh Miners Rangers

A respectful two minutes silence held for Remembrance Sunday was duly honoured by all in attendance before the kick off of this ding-dong battle for third place in the table.

The Hornets were outscored five tries to four and goal kicking was poor from both sides; HFH collected two from four attempts which proved to be vital as the Leigh outfit missed all theirs.

HFH scorched into a first minute lead when Alex Clare made the initial break to clear the danger zone. On the next play, Tom Murtha powered through the middle to score under the sticks and add the extra points.

Two minutes later Jonny Wood came up with a tremendous try saving tackle only to see the visitors score after a mix up by the Hornets when defending a bomb.

LMR took the lead at 06 - 08 when another defensive error led to a try. Unrest within the Hornets camp upset their rhythm as players argued amongst themselves. Luckily LMR couldn`t capitalise.

An error from the Rangers deep in HFH territory, allowed the Hornets to regain the lead with the `try of the match`. From a scrum Dean Ainsworth dummied his way through ten metres from his own line but was eventually caught by a Leigh defender. Alex Clare was on hand to take the ball from acting half and supply the final pass for Tom Murtha to score out wide.

LMR hit back with tries either side of the break when a series of HFH errors and weak defences gave Rangers the lead at 10-16.

Hornets Tom Murtha claimed his hat-trick to peg back the visitors before the LMR loose forward also bagged his third and stretching the LMR lead to six points after another missed tackle.

The Hornets were lucky to escape minutes later when a kick on the last tackle just rolled dead as the centre tried to touch down.

With time running out and the Hornets decided to push hard in one last effort.

Dean Ainsworth attacked the blind side and found Alex Clare with a cut out pass. Alex finished strongly scoring under the sticks. Ainsworth?s conversion just crept over the posts to salvage a draw at twenty all.

Good performances from Murtha, Clare, Ainsworth and Adam Murphy were supported by a steady debut from Mitchell Dyas.

18 Nov 07, Higginshaw v's Halton F H

Bleak wintery conditions greeted HFH U13`s when they travelled to Oldham on Sunday to take on second placed Higginshaw.

Fielding virtually a full strength side, HFH started the game in a confident mood and contested in the arm wrestle for the first score. Errors from both teams were understandable and when Higginshaw dropped the ball twenty metres from their own line, it was Dean Ainsworth who from the base of the scrum dummied his way over the line for the opening score. Tom Murtha slotted over the conversion.

An error from the restart by Higginshaw enabled Hornets to gain possession at the scrum, from which Alex Clare struck. Racing sixty metres, Alex scored a great try under the sticks. Again, Murtha added the extra points.

The home side looked shocked and struggled to cope with the Hornets attack. Jonny Wood looked in the clear but was eventually caught and Alex Clare looked dangerous with every touch.

Higginshaw were the next to score against the run of play. An error by the Hornets allowed the scrum half to score from a blind side run and take the score to 06 - 12 at half time.

The second period began with several HFH players suffering from the severe weather conditions. A series of pedantic penalties and strange decisions by the referee aided Higginshaw`s cause.

The Oldham side drew level from one such penalty and took the lead after 'Man-of-the-Match', Conner Keenan, and scrum half Dean Ainsworth, both left the field unable to function in the sub zero temperatures.

With Sean Freeman, Adam Murphy and Jonny Wood joining the list of casualties, and with only four points in it, the Hornets tried bravely to hit back with Alex Clare, Sam Osbourne, Tom Walters and Matty Freeman to the fore.

The battle was eventually lost in the final minute when Higginshaw hit back with a dubious try in the corner. From the restart and the referee announcing he would blow for the final whistle on the next tackle, the Higginshaw Loose Forward raced seventy metres after breaking through the Hornets line, to score under the sticks.

That final try resulted in a score line which flattered Higginshaw and did not reflect the true nature of the game.

25 Nov 07, Halton F H v's Chorley Panthers

In a must win game, the Hornets completely fell apart due to petty infighting amongst some of the players, which was a complete contrast to last week`s brave and determined effort.

The only positives out of the game were the performances of Alex Clare (Coaches' Award), Tom Murtha, Sam Osbourne, Matty Freeman and `Man-of-the-Match`, Dean Ainsworth.

Chorley were 10 - 00 to the good in the first twelve minutes with two tries that should have been stopped but a combination of errors and weak tackling didn`t help the Hornets cause.

A penalty to HFH for a high tackle gave them the opportunity to strike back on fifteen minute. Good passing from Dean Ainsworth and Sam McGrory found Alex Clare who finished strongly for a try on the right. Tom Murtha added the extras.

That was about as good as it got for the home side; they were only able to completed one set during the whole match.

The Hornets forwards never got going with only Sam Osbourne and Tom Murtha having any effect. Half backs Dean Ainsworth and Alex Clare tried manfully to open up the Panthers defence but with no platform to work from it was all in vain.

Continued dissent amongst the ranks disrupted the Hornets play. Constant errors and panic in defence gave the game to the Panthers and they took advantage racking up a further five tries to win the match easily.

Sam McGrory and Dean Ainsworth shared the `Man-of-the-Match` award, with Alex Clare, Tom Murtha and Sam Osbourne the pick of another great team performance.

Halton Farnworth Hornets U13`s looked to be on for a bit of a stuffing in their first game back after the Christmas break when Oldham`s stand-off raced in with barely fifteen seconds on the clock. The Hornets however kept their heads up and stuck manfully to the task despite Oldham Saint Anne`s having the lion`s share of possession.

The Hornets best chance came after a try saving tackle by Dean Ainsworth denied OSA`s a certain score fifteen metres out. From the resultant scrum, Alex Clare streaked away only for the outstanding OSA stand-off to save the line in similar fashion.

HFH U13`s battled hard but lost the ball at crucial times gifting OSA field position. OSA pounded the Hornets line and the pressure eventually told when they scored two late tries to end the first half at 00 - 18.

Oldham stretched their lead early in the second half before Tom Murtha scored a great try with Dean Ainsworth adding the extra points.
Oldham's stand-off went on another great run to the line only for Alex Clare to halt his progress just three metres out with an excellent rear saving tackle.

HFH went close on a couple of occasions, one after a good cross field kick from Murtha just failed to be touched down by the chasing Hornets attackers. OSA wrapped up the game in the last five minutes with two more tries against a tiring defence, and therefore retaining their 100% unbeaten record intact.

The HFH U13`s player`s efforts could not be faulted with notable performances from forwards Conner Keenan and Alex Clare. Along with the combination of half backs Dean Ainsworth and Tom Murtha, this highlighted the strong spirit of the Hornets team.

First division leaders Higginshaw played hosts to a HFH U13’s side that travelled with only 13 fit players available. Despite coming away without the win, the Hornets produced their most spirited performance of the season.

The Oldham outfit came out in a determined mood knowing victory would increase their lead at the top of the table but came up against a battling Hornets side.

The game ebbed and flowed and despite wet and windy conditions both sides played good rugby.

The first score came on seven minutes against the run of play when Higginshaw scored to the left of the posts. The next try could have been saved after hesitation in the Hornets cover led to an easy score for the big Oldham centre.

HFH were not to be outdone and made inroads into Higginshaw territory with good work from the forwards. The Hornets could not crack open the hosts excellent defence. At just 12 – 00, the Hornets were unlucky to concede another try on the last play of the half.

The second periods began with the Hornets asking all the questions and were justly rewarded when Owen Pettigan scooted over after a fine break from Dean Ainsworth, which had Higginshaw at sixes and sevens. Ainsworth added the extras.

Jonny Wood was next over the line after another good spell of attacking play but was relieved of the ball in the act of scoring with the referee unsighted. Alex Clare took advantage of an error from Higginshaw and scored under the posts only for it to be cancelled out as the referee had already given the knock on.

Higginshaw looked unsettled but survived the onslaught and scored the final try in the dying minutes of the match.

The Hornets knew they had given 100% and it showed as they celebrated a good performance with a team slide in the mud.

Sam Osbourne took the ‘Man of the Match’ award closely followed by Conner Keenan, Dean Ainsworth, Alex Clare, Jonny Wood and Tom Murtha.

North West Counties CHALLENGE CUP, ROUND ONE

If there were medals for bravery, sheer guts and determination in rugby league the North West Counties would be awarding them to the eleven players who turned out in the colours of Halton Farnworth Hornets to contest this cup match against Premier division side Pilkington Recs Pumas.

Pilks big pack came up against a solid defensive wall in the middle of the field and when they tried to use their two man advantage by shifting the ball wide they were met by a superb scrambling defence.

HFH U13`s were unlucky to fall behind in the eighth minute when defending the last play. Pilks went for the line and great tackling forced the ball from the attacker who then fell onto the ball but the referee was unsighted and awarded the try.

Both sides continued to play attractive football with Dean Ainsworth and Tom Murtha prompting from half back in both attack and defence.

Pack leader Alex Clare, Sam Osbourne (Man-of-the-Match) and Tom Walters worked tirelessly with Owen Pettigan and Joe Kelly, to hold the Pilks forwards. This pushed the Pilks attack to the flanks but the outstanding Jonny Wood, Jordan Maddocks, Matty Freeman and Wayne Lawless, were in no mood to let them through.

Alex Clare was brilliant with his cover defence producing some great try saving tackles but with two minutes remaining Pilks scored a try on the last play from a scoot close to the line.

HFH hit back almost immediately when a long pass from Dean Ainsworth found Tom Murtha who burst through the middle and finished superbly. The conversion just missed.

At only 04 - 10 the ‘Hornets Eleven’ had hope for the second half.

From the second half kick-off, the ball went deep from the Pumas only to find the strong running Sam Osbourne who went on a fifty metre barge knocking off several defenders before offloading to Alex Clare to sprint the remaining fifty and score under the sticks. Tom Murtha kicked the conversion to level the scores at 10 – 10.

The Pumas forwards failed to dominate the middle so continued to attack down the left and on one occasion Jordan Maddocks and Dean Ainsworth, combined to produced a terrific tackle in the corner to save the line.

Pilks eventually scored again on the last tackle to go in front but the Hornets fought back. The Pumas then stretched their lead to eight points with just a few minutes remaining but again the Hornets tried to hit back with Dean Ainsworth going close before Tom Murtha had the ball ripped in the act of scoring.

It was a fantastic performance by the Hornets, where all that mattered, was the way they played…….with heart and spirit.

10 Feb 08, Halton F H v's Wigan St Cuthberts

Halton Farnworth Hornets entertained lowly Wigan St Cuthbert’s looking for a win that would take them up the table.

The visitors had the best of the opening exchanges and looked far from the side propping up the division. The Hornets looked slightly unorganised and WSC took advantage and nearly scored as the loose forward raced to the line only to be met by his opposite number Alex Clare, who saved the line for the home side.

This spurred the Hornets into life and Dean Ainsworth put out a great pass for Jonny Wood, who despite being ankle tapped, raced in from forty metres.

WSC were proving difficult to break down but eventually they cracked with two tries in as many minutes when Conner Keenan smashed through on a solo run (goaled by Tom Murtha) and then Alex Clare took the easier route slicing through the gap after another good Ainsworth pass. The conversion attempt was missed to leave the half time score at 14 - 00.

The second half opened much as the first and indeed, it was WSC who scored first after just two minutes. Ill discipline in the Hornets play gifted WSC successive penalties from which they applied the pressure but a good defensive effort kept them at bay.

In the final fifteen minutes, the crowd were entertained by some good attacking rugby which produced eight tries in all.
Alex Clare was the first to go in from the base of the scrum picking up from forty five metres and outpacing the Wigan cover, before Jonny Wood scored from an Ainsworth Murtha move.

WSC hit back after a penalty and with the Hornets defence showing no urgency WSC crossed easily.

Tom Murtha restored the initiative with another try from a scoot before Joe Kelly and Tom Murtha combined to put Dean Ainsworth on a fifty metre run down the right, handing off several defenders to score in the corner.

From the restart the ball fell to Ainsworth who stepped to one side to avoid the oncoming defence, and then raced in from seventy metres to grab a quick brace.

An error from the Hornets at the next restart lead to a try for WSC before Wood registered his hat-trick to wind up the scoring.

Dean Ainsworth claimed the ‘Man-of-the-Match’ award, closely followed by Tom Murtha, Conner Keenan, Alex Clare and Jonny Wood with his hat-trick earning him the ‘Coaches Award’.

Wigan St Cuthbert’s U13’s travelled to Wilmere Lane Sports Ground and faced a HFH U13’s side that was a shadow of the team that beat them convincingly a fortnight earlier.

The Wigner’s looked like a team that practised together and it showed in the way they played the game, whereas the Hornets resembled a team that was thrown together on a Sunday morning and their performance reflected their current attitude to training.

Due to a lack of outside backs, forwards Tom Walters and Mitchell Dyas forced selection out wide, which caused raised eyebrows but out of the five tries WSC registered only one was scored in their channel.

The game started badly for WSC as they knocked on from the kick off. The Hornets applied the pressure but constant errors let WSC off the hook. It wasn’t until the eighth minute that HFH took advantage. Dean Ainsworth put Jonny Wood on a run to the line and he was tackled short but a quick play the ball found Dean Ainsworth who skirted across the WSC defence before cutting through a hole to dive over. Tom Murtha added the extras.

WSC hit back to take the lead with two soft tries from their centre both from kicks which found the Hornets lacking in their defensive organisation.

Dean Ainsworth scored the equaliser with a strong run down the right, with only three minutes of the first half remaining.

The second period began with a try to the WSC loose forward which sparked a mini revival from the Hornets. Tom Murtha was awarded a penalty try under the sticks but Dean Ainsworth failed with the easy conversion.

Ainsworth made amends to restore the lead popping up at acting half back and diving over from short range for his hat-trick. Then Sam Osbourne went on a barnstorming run swatting off several tacklers on his way to the line. Murtha added both goals.

At 26 - 16 HFH looked to have gained the initiative but WSC had other ideas and it was their strong running centre that ensured they shared the spoils with two well taken tries in the last five minutes.

Although the HFH U13’s didn’t click, they were a little unlucky not to take the points after Sam Osbourne crashed over midway through the second half for what looked like a legitimate score, only for it to be ruled out by the referee.

‘Man of the Match’ Dean Ainsworth was ably supported by Sam Osbourne (Coaches’ Award), Alex Clare and Conner Keenan.

02 Mar 08, Oldham St Anne's v's Halton F H

HFH U13’s were totally outclassed by title favourites OSA after travelling with the bare thirteen players.

HFH u13’s had no answer to Oldham’s’ strong running stand-off who had a hand in virtually every score as OSA produced a ten try blitz.

Man of the Match Conner Keenan, Sam Osbourne, Dean Ainsworth and Jonny Wood tried manfully to hold the home side but the Hornets produced an error strewn performance that did them no favours.

Couple with some woeful tackling performances, and the story of the game unfolded for the Hornets.

The HFH U13’s can only learn from the experience of this game.

‘Man of the Match’ Connor Keenan, Sam Osbourne, Dean Ainsworth and Jonny Wood.
