06 Spet 09, Leigh East v's Halton F H

Halton Farnworth Hornets U10’s made their first visit to the very impressive facilities at Leigh Sports Village, where they were entertained by Leigh East.

This match was a very entertaining, hard fought encounter and produced a great advert for junior rugby league. It was the first game of the season so both teams were playing under the Mod rules for the first time.

Hornets started strongly both in attack and defence. They were passing the ball confidently along the line searching for gaps in a resolute Leigh East defensive line. Hornets’ completion rate was good and mistakes from either team were at a premium. Eventually, Leigh’s defence gave a glimmer of a gap, and the ever alert Harry Smith exploited the hesitation and dived over in the corner.

At the start of the second half it was Hornets defences’ turn to show their mettle. Leigh pushed hard to get on level terms but couldn’t find a way through, or around, the determined well organised Hornets defence. They ended up falling further behind, to a well worked Hornets team try, scored by Lewis Bates. After the ball had passed through many pairs of Hornets hands Bates got space to go over in the corner.

Again, to their credit, Leigh came back stronger and earned four repeat sets through their kick chase game. The Hornets defended their line valiantly, but eventually were breached after the 22nd consecutive tackle.

The match was finely balanced with both sets of players giving their all. The action ebbed and flowed, from end to end, with both teams going close to scoring.

However, with the last play of the last set, Hornets scored again to put the result beyond doubt. Jayden Hatton ran it, on the last tackle, after a blistering Hornets break, and barged over from close range to seal a hard earned victory.

All in all, this was a great start to the season and much credit must go to Leigh East, who pushed the Hornets all the way. Their facilities were state of the art and went a long way to providing the spectators and players with a really enjoyable experience. Top quality junior rugby league, played in a great spirit, with high quality changing and after match social facilities. If only the Hornets had access to similar at Wilmere Lane!!!

13 Sept 09, Halton F H v's Newton Storm

Following on from last week’s hard fought victory (and the excellent facilities) at Leigh East, the Hornets were back down to earth at Wilmere Lane Sports Ground to entertain Newton Storm.

Over the last couple of seasons, these have proved to be close fought encounters between two of the North-West’s best teams, and this match was no exception.

The HFH U10’s started well, earning three repeat sets, which put the Storm defence under great pressure. However, Newton’s try line stayed intact thanks to some resolute, stout goal-line tackling.

Much of the first period was played in Newton’s half of the pitch and great credit must go to their defence for holding the Hornets at bay. Time and time again they repelled the Hornets’ attacks, tackling like demons!

Eventually, the pressure told and Hornets found a way to cross the line. It came from a long kick through by Harry Smith that the Storm defence failed to deal with. The ball bobbled about and was grounded over the line by Lewis Bates, who had timed his run to perfection.

Another try was needed if the Hornets were to ensure victory, as Newton was always dangerous going forward. The visitors started to come back into the game towards half time. The standard of defence on display from both sides was immense and credit must go to both sets of players. Neither side could find gaps in the opposition’s line.

The Hornets weren’t allowed to give the ball as much air this week, as the Newton defence was in their faces very quickly. This led to some mistakes that the players will learn from.

At the start of the second half, Newton started to show more in attack and this time it was the Hornets who were pegged back close to their own line. Under pressure, both sides made handling errors that handed the initiative to the opposition.

Five minutes from time, Newton got back on level terms, by earning a repeat set from a kick through that Ellis Smith had to ground behind his own line. They attacked down the short side and managed to barge over in the corner.

The Hornets responded well and went in search of the winner. They pummelled the Newton line with attack after attack and were in a great position when the game had to be curtailed slightly early due to a serious injury.

One of the Newton players suffered a facial injury whilst tackling Ben Davies. The injury was deemed serious enough for an ambulance to be called. All staff, players and supporters of Halton Farnworth Hornets hope that the player wasn’t seriously hurt and will back on a rugby field very soon.  After all, it was a great tackle and forced a knock on!!

In conclusion, this was another great advert for junior Rugby League. The Hornets should be a little disappointed, not having won the match, after leading for so long but they needed a second score to put themselves out of reach. This didn’t come because of the standard of Newton’s defence that kept them in the game for long periods. When Newton had their chance to score, they took it. The Hornets need to learn from today and move on to next week with confidence.

20 Sept 09, Saddleworth Rangers v's Halton F H

There was a hint of autumn in the air as HFH U10’s made the long trip to Saddleworth. The sun was shining when the Hornets got to the other side of Oldham where, nestled between the peaks of Saddleworth Moor, the Rangers play their home games.

The match was a demonstration of how professional and ruthless, both when attacking and defending their own line, the HFH U10’s are.

The resulting score line of Saddleworth Rangers 00 HFH 09 wasn’t really the most important factor from the day. More important was the performance.

The match was played on a large pitch, which allowed the Hornets to practice some drills from the training ground. They threw the ball around with increasing confidence and soon made indentations in the home defence for a number of Hornets players to cross.

Saddleworth tried to respond but had to really work hard for each metre as the Hornets’ defence was uncompromising and well drilled. When in possession, the Hornets made ground and always looked dangerous.

The match, as a contest, was over by half-time with the Hornets leading 00 - 04.

The second half brought some pressure from Saddleworth, who broke the Hornet’s line and looked destined to score but a great cover tackle by Jayden Hatton averted the danger. It was tantamount to the Hornets’ love of tackling and defence that they would not allow Rangers to score any points. Their determination must dishearten the opposition on a weekly basis.

In the second period the Hornets ran in five more unanswered tries.

There were plenty of positives from today’s team performance but a special mention must go to Callum Tollitt. He is really improving as a player each week. This morning he beat two defenders on a barn-storming run, and then had the presence of mind to offload the ball to Thomas Craig who slipped through the hole to score. It was great to see the pride on Callum’s dad’s face!!

27 Sept 09, Halton F H v's Thatto Heath Crusaders

Today saw the HFH U10’s return home to Wilmere Lane Sports Ground after their enjoyable expedition to Saddleworth last week.

Conditions were perfect for rugby league and the supporters of both teams turned up in force.

The Hornets started brightly and scored a well worked try on the first set with Calum O’Neill bursting through a gap, after evading two would be tacklers. This set the tone for the rest of the match, with Thatto Heath trying desperately to contain the rampant Hornets’ attackers.

When they did get the ball, the visitors found it very difficult to make ground against a tenacious Hornets defence. The Crusaders repeatedly handed the initiative to the Hornets through knocking the ball on, in the face of some fearsome tackling.

As last week, the Hornets played some great free flowing rugby, with all players standing up to the plate and grafting for the team. This resulted in a great win.

Tries came from all areas of the field, but special mentions need to go to Ellis Smith and Jayden Hatton who both scored hat-tricks in an emphatic team performance.

11 Oct 09, Halton F H v's Widnes Moorfield

In this eagerly awaited local derby, both teams played their part in an entertaining hard fought encounter.

Conditions were poor with a light drizzle, the type that soaks you, falling incessantly from the autumn sky. Taking this into consideration, there were very few handling errors in a match where both teams tried to pass the ball along the line when in the attacking mode.

However, it was the Hornets who managed the conditions better and eventually came out on top.

Ben Davies set the tone of the game by going over in the corner after a great solo effort early on.

Again and again, the Hornets meagre defence would not allow the Moorfield pack to make any easy yards and consequently most of the action was close to the Moorfield try line.

Inevitably gaps began to appear and the Hornets took full advantage with Jayden Hatton crossing twice, Will Tilleke barging over from close range and Lewis Bates adding another in the second half.

The match was played in a great spirit and it was obvious local pride was at stake. There were some big hits, by both sets of forwards, that made the crowd wince but all players took them in the right spirit and got on with the game.

Credit must go to the Moorfield team, and their coaching staff, who played some good rugby when in possession. Unfortunately for Moorfield, the Hornets defence was to strong and held them at bay.

The final outcome resulted in the Hornets securing a fourth consecutive ‘nilling’ of the opposition, which is a great achievement at any standard of rugby league, let alone an U10’s side.

18 Oct 09, Halton F H v's Westhoughton

Hornets under 10s welcomed the newly formed Westhoughton team to Wilmere Lane Sports Ground this week. The visitors didn't lack enthusiasm or courage but this was a one-sided match and the result was never in doubt.

Scoring with their first possession of the ball, the Hornets set the tone for the morning. It was obvious to the freezing spectators that one team had played together for three years and the other had only just started out.

The Hornets ran on to the ball and made ground quickly, scoring try after try in the first half, even without employing any of the moves practised in training. In truth, this led to a dropping of standards in the Hornets performance. Instead of drawing the man and passing, it was easier to score individual tries.

Westhoughton persisted and improved in the second half. They had the benefit of three Hornets players (Jayden Hatton, Harry Smith and Calum O’Neill) to help organise their team and make more of a game of it.

At one stage they even had fourteen players on the pitch against the eleven Hornets! This was soon spotted by the vigilant referee and sorted out.

Westhoughton actually came close to scoring in the latter stages of the match but a great cover tackle by Thomas Craig prevented Jayden Hatton scoring against his own team!! This meant that for the fifth week running the Hornets defence had not been breached.

15 Nov 09, Rylands v's Halton F H

This week the HFH U10’s made the relatively short trip to Warrington to face Ryland’s.

The Hornets boys put in a great first half display and scored freely in the opening part of the match to take a commanding lead by half time.

Again the defence was outstanding with Ryland’s really struggling to make any ground forward. The Hornets protected their record of not conceding a try in any of the last six matches and it was going to take something special for the opposition to break through.

However, midway through the second half, when the match was over as a contest, the moment arrived! Ryland’s scored a great individual try when the scrum half chipped over the defence and was able to gather the ball, and go on to score. This was a bit of individual brilliance that was appreciated by both sets of supporters.

As a result, the Hornets were stung back into offensive action and then went on to score three more tries themselves without reply.

29 Nov 09, Halton F H v's Woolston

The HFH U10’s returned to action this week after last week’s fixture was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. The visitors to Wilmere Lane Sports Ground were a much improved Woolston team.

Conditions were awful as the players took to the field but both teams contributed to an entertaining match. Woolston ran hard and quickly onto the ball. They defended much more like a unit, rather than like last time when the Hornets played them.

However, the Hornets were running hot; despite the sub-zero temperatures and driving rain, they started the game strongly. The Hornet’s coaching staff used the full squad in this encounter, and moved players about, giving them the opportunity to shine in different positions.

The team’s performance demonstrated real strength in depth, as another great defensive display frustrated a determined and hard working Woolston outfit. The HFH U10’s tackled like demons and ensured a clean sheet for the eighth time in nine games. A fantastic achievement for any team!!

At the offensive end of the pitch, tries flowed regularly but the Hornets had to work hard for them. There were a couple of players that stood out. Lewis Bates finished a great team move when the ball had passed through many pairs of hands from one side of the pitch to the other. This was great to watch in such poor conditions!

Harry Smith scored a marvellous individual try when he ran from his own try line and beat each of the opposition players, showing phenomenal balance and speed.

Despite the conditions, this was a match that was enjoyed by all players and spectators. Woolston should take heart from a very spirited performance and their improvement from last season was very obvious. They will be a force to be reckoned with in seasons to come.

However, today was all about the Hornets!!

06 Dec 09, Wigan St Judes v's Halton F H

Combative, cohesive, clinical and classy are four words that could be used to describe the HFH U10’s great display this weekend at Wigan St. Jude’s. This was an eagerly awaited fixture for the HFH U10s because St Jude’s were the only team that the Hornets hadn’t beaten after two previous encounters.

Combative, because the Hornets had to fight for the right to play in this hard fought encounter. As is typical of Wigan sides, St. Jude’s ran on to the ball hard and fast but each of the Hornet’s defenders stood their ground and repelled their counterparts time and again.

Cohesive, because the Hornets grew and bonded as a team when times got hard. Inevitably, mistakes were made in this high octane encounter, but the Hornets players rallied round and supported each other magnificently, learning the true meaning of team work and the strength that comes from unity.

Clinical, because just as the Hornets made the odd mistake, they discovered that if you build enough pressure on the opposition, the opposition will make mistakes and the dyke will collapse. Time and again, well placed kicks and ‘in the face’ defence forced errors which the Hornets capitalised upon to race into a 00 - 03 lead.

Credit must go to St Jude’s, as they showed what a good side they are, to come back into the match. Their never say die attitude made this an enthralling encounter for the spectators. Half-time came with the score at 01 - 03 but it could have been closer if a St Jude’s player hadn’t knocked on over the line. This was well spotted by the official and honestly admitted by the player himself.

The home side did get to within a score straight after half-time but the Hornets didn’t panic. They realised they were in a battle, stepped up the work-rate another notch and took control of the match again. Each side celebrated a forced error as if they had scored a try because they knew the importance of possession. However, it was the Hornets who turned possession into points!

Classy, because in such a great team performance, one player stood out, scoring four tries. There is no substitute for pace at any level in the game, and Jayden Hatton used his pace to devastating effect. Each time he saw a gap, he was through it and St Jude’s defence couldn’t prevent the tries that inevitably followed. Ben Davies added another score to make the final score a fair reflection of the match.

To sum up, this was a weekend when the Hornets U10’s put a marker in the sand. If they continue their development, and work together, as they did to overcome St Jude’s, they will be a very difficult team to beat!! Lessons have been learnt, i.e. when the going got tough, each and every one of the Hornets players stood together, encouraged and supported each other and came through a tough encounter with flying colours.

07 Feb 10, Halton F H v's Clock Face

The HFH U10’s resumed their season in ruthless fashion after a long winters break. The visitors to Wilmere Lane Sports Ground were a gallant Clock Face team but they had a difficult task trying to contain an eager Hornets side, which was more than ready for a competitive match.

Clock Face found it very difficult to make ground early on and the incessant Hornets pressure finally told when Lewis Bates went over in the corner. Tries began to flow at regular intervals for the Hornets once the initial resistance had been broken down.

Special mention must be given to Alex Jones who made his Hornets debut on Sunday. Alex ran the ball in strongly and had the confidence to offload when appropriate. He looks like a valuable addition to the team.

To their credit, Clock Face never gave up and kept running the ball in against a solid and well organised Hornets defence.

This is now a reversed fixture - playing at WLSG.

The HFH U10’s had a disrupted preparation for this match. Training, and last week’s fixture had to be postponed due to adverse weather conditions, and that disruption led to a frustrating and below par performance on the pitch. The boys didn't defend well in the early stages of the game, giving up possession cheaply and this gave encouragement to the visitors.

However, after Alex Jones scored a fine individual try, the floodgates opened.

The Hornets scored whenever in possession but they didn't throw the ball around as well as they could have. This was a great opportunity to practise set moves in a match situation but the opportunity wasn't capitalised upon.

Credit must go the St Anne's who never gave up, and showed courage and determination in the face of some fearsome tackling. They will improve with time!

07 Mar 10, Halton F H v's Shevington

After last week’s disappointing team performance, the HFH U10’s got back on track against a spirited Shevington Sharks outfit.

The Hornets were more incisive in attack, giving the ball plenty of air at every opportunity, which resulted in some great team tries. There were also a couple of good individual scores but the coaches were more delighted with the better team display.

The ball was passed along the line regularly and runners from deep found holes in Shevington’s rearguard, resulting in numerous scores.

Defensively, the Hornets were more organised this week and would have kept another clean sheet were it not for a controversial try given to the visitors with the last play of the match.

However, in the big scheme of things, Shevington Sharks deserved some joy for the efforts that their players had put into a difficult fixture for them.

14 Mar 10, Wigan St Cuthberts v's Halton F H

A lot of debate took place after this close encounter as to who had actually won the match! This was because the Hornets outscored the opposition by 5 tries to 4 but had missed three of their five conversions, whereas Wigan St Cuthbert’s converted four from four.

The conditions played a big part in a disjointed Hornets performance. The wind in particular was making passing difficult and causing knock-on’s a plenty from both sets of players.

The Hornets started with the wind and hill in their favour, but it was the home side that scored first after a great ball out wide exposed a gap in the HFH U10’s rearguard.

This fired the Hornets into action and they scored four unanswered scores before half time to take control of the game.

However, the second half was a different story.

Wigan St. Cuthbert’s scored straight from the kick off and gained the momentum. Their tactic of kicking early in the tackle count meant that the Hornets were playing most of the second half close to their own line.

Two more tries followed for the home side after dubious refereeing decisions.

The Hornets hit back with another try of their own to outscore the home team.

On reflection, the Hornets won’t be pleased with the way they defended. They weren’t their usual terrier-like tacklers and the defensive line didn’t move up as one.

This allowed a very pacey Wigan St Cuthbert’s Winger to round the outside of the Hornets defensive line on a couple of occasions, and which resulted in tries.

Hopefully the HFH U10’s players will learn from the experience of today’s game and that they’ll come back even stronger.

28 Mar 10, West Bank Bears v's Halton F H

The Hornets Under 10’s made the short trip to the Widnes Recreation Ground where they faced a much improved West Bank Bears outfit.

As you'd expect in a local derby, the tackling was ferocious but fair. The Hornets defence was much tighter than their last outing and West Bank Bears found making progress hard work.

However, due to numerous handling errors from kicks, West Bank Bears controlled possession in the early exchanges.

Eventually, when the Hornets gained possession, and held onto it, the tries began to flow.

Credit must go to West Bank Bears who have improved beyond recognition since the last time the Hornets played them. They had a couple of standout players who tried to pass the ball and ran hard in search of gaps in the Hornets’ defence.

Just before the end of the match, WBB got the try their efforts warranted! Unfortunately for them, it was too little too late, as the Hornets were too far ahead on the scoreboard.

18 Apr 10, Halton F H v's Hindley

After a couple of inactive weeks the HFH U10’s got back to winning ways this week against an enthusiastic but emerging Hindley team.

At the start of the match Hindley could only field 9 players so the Hornets did the same. However, as a contest the match was won by half time with the Hornets leading 30 - 00.

The second half was a more entertaining affair as the Hornets coaches decided to assist the visitors by giving them four of the Hornets team, and play 13 against 13.

This gave the Hindley team more go forward and better defence.

The players enjoyed tackling their team mates and made a real effort to upset the Hornets performance. In fact, they scored the visitors only try through Ellis Smith. However, the Hornets just stepped up a gear and ran in some great second half tries.

Special mention must go out to Evan Purvis, Ellis Smith, Kane Fletcher and Harry Smith who helped make the match a much closer affair than it would have been by playing the second half for the visitors!

25 Apr 10, Halton F H v's Waterhead

Ruthless defence was the key as the HFH U10’s earned a hard fought victory against Waterhead.

The visitors tried valiantly to get through or around the Hornets defence but uncompromising tackling meant they made little progress. This led to frustration which some found hard to contain.

The Hornets’ defence laid the platform for some great passing movements which resulted in quality tries. They showed a maturity in the way they executed the plays and each player made a valuable contribution to a great team display.

02 May 10, Latchford v's Halton F H

The HFH U10’s travelled to Warrington to play against a much improved Latchford outfit.

Latchford had some large, imposing forwards who physically were much bigger than the Hornets.

However, not for the first time this season, the opposition found it very difficult to make any clean breaks against a resolute, well organised defence. Even when the Latchford forwards managed to offload the ball in the tackle, there was always cover tackles made by the enthusiastic Hornets defenders.

As a result, the Hornets were gaining possession in areas of the field where they could hurt the opposition. Building on the solid defence, the Hornets gained confidence when throwing the ball around, and scored some really good tries.

The Hornets players are realising that it doesn’t matter who scores, and they are playing some great entertaining rugby. They are solid in defence and inventive going forward. Both of these attributes bode well for the future!

09 May 10, Blackbrook Royals v's Halton F H

This is an eagerly anticipated fixture each season between two of the strongest teams in the age group. This encounter was a tight affair with the Hornets eventually coming out on top.

The Hornets started brightly and took the lead after a lofted kick out wide was gathered in by Calum O’Neil.  Both sides had to fight for every yard, as the standard of tackling was exceptional. The game was played in a great spirit by both sets of players.

As the first half progressed, Blackbrook gained possession close to the Hornets’ line and after a rare missed tackle, managed to go over in the corner.

However, conceding a try stung the Hornets into attack and they went ahead again on the next set. Jayden Hatton scored a great try under the sticks after a typically mazy run.

Half Time:
Blackbrook 04 verses Halton Farnworth Hornets 10.

The second half started badly for the Hornets with Blackbrook gaining possession from their own kick off. This was to be the start of what can only be described as a siege on the Hornets’ line. The home team had four sets camped on the visitors’ line. Blackbrook threw the ball around skilfully probing for an opening but time and again the Hornets put their bodies on the line and kept their line intact.

On one occasion, Blackbrook looked certain to score in the corner. One of their stronger players only had to put the ball down, but a combination tackle by two much smaller Hornets players somehow kept him out. The Hornets’ defence for those five minutes was simply awesome, everyone in a black shirt learnt about themselves and their team mates during that Blackbrook onslaught. It was this period of the game that was to prove decisive.

After weathering the storm, the Hornets fought their way back into the game and eventually started to get possession further from their own line. This gave them the opportunity to score again and put the game beyond a determined Blackbrook outfit.

The match was a scrappy affair with not much free flowing rugby on view but that was because the defences of both teams were very much on top. The tackling was of an exceptionally high standard from both teams.

If next seasons match is like this one, the HFH U10’s players are eagerly anticipating it already!!

16 May 10, Halton F H v's Burtonwood

A spirited Burtonwood team were the visitors to Wilmere Lane Sports Ground on Sunday, where they played their part in quite an entertaining match.

Both sides used the ball to good effect, trying to pass it out wide in blustery conditions. However, it was the Hornets who were the only side to cross the opponents’ line.

The Hornets’ defence was again outstanding and forced turnover after turnover. This possession was inevitably turned into points.

However, Burtonwood emerged from the fixture with great credit. As the game slipped away from them, their heads never went down and they continued to play the game in the right spirit. They tried to pass the ball and find gaps, but the Hornets ensured there were no gaps to find!

This was the twelfth time this season that the HFH Under 10’s haven’t conceded a single point in a match; a remarkable record!  Defence is definitely the bedrock of a successful side, and the HFH U10’s have a formidable record in this department.

23 May 10, Chorley v's Halton F H

The Hornets played their penultimate game of the season away to Chorley Panthers on Sunday.

This was always going to be a difficult fixture due to the extremely hot conditions. Before the game started, the coaches agreed to allow the players a short break in either half to take on fluids.

Both teams started brightly, tackling hard and throwing the ball about when in possession. When the Hornets had the ball they made real progress towards their opponent’s line, whereas the Panthers found making ground difficult, against a characteristically dominant defensive display by the Hornets.

The field position gained gave the Hornets opportunities to score points, and that is what they did with regularity.

Great credit must go to Chorley who never gave up, they continued to tackle and run hard, but today belonged to the Hornets.

30 May 10, Halton F H v's Wigan St Patricks

Wigan St. Patrick’s were the visitors to Wilmere Lane Sports Ground and they produced a thrilling encounter between two very well organised and determined teams.

A victory for the Hornets would ensure they would remain unbeaten throughout the season for the first time. However, despite dominating possession, the Hornets fell behind to a great breakaway try early in the first half. This seemed to galvanise the resolve of the home team and they pressed hard for an equalising try.

Solid defence from St. Patrick’s kept the Hornets at bay but eventually the pressure told. Ellis Smith brilliantly grounding the ball from a Harry Smith kick through.

The Hornets notched up another gear in the second half and forced the visitors back behind their own line on three separate occasions. This eagerness in defence led to a domination of possession and field position, which resulted in a couple more tries for the Hornets.

However, St Patrick’s were good opponents. They tackled hard and played some great rugby with the ball. The deciding factor in this match, as has so often been the case, was the quality of the Hornets defence. They simply buzzed all around the player with the ball and made gaining yards very difficult.

This was a hard fought victory and was rightly celebrated by the boys at the final whistle. To go a whole season undefeated is a great achievement at any level and credit must go to the coaching staff and players whose dedication and determination is valued and applauded by all parents.
