12 Sept 10, Halton F H v's Wigan St Cuthberts

HFH U10’s opened the new season in style with an emphatic victory over Wigan St Cuthbert’s. The Hornets were desperate to get the new season underway after being unable to play any warm ups or festivals, however they adapted to the new rules very confidently.

From the kick off Hornets took possession and the forwards were able to make good yardage up the pitch with each drive, Cuthbert’s were tackling well, with several players in each tackle. However this inspired the Hornets to move wider and exploit the bigger pitch they played on. By half time the Hornets had effectively won the game, however not one of the players switched off, and they carried on with dominating defence and working some exciting attacking moves, with the ball often going through several pairs of hands.

Credit to St Cuthbert’s who never gave up, and grew in confidence as the game went on, and were rewarded with two late tries of their own. The final say however went again to the Hornets, with an exciting try in the corner to round off a great start to the season.

Well done to all the lads, it is looking promising for the season ahead.

STORM IN A TEA CUP

Halton Farnworth Hornets U10s made the short trip to Newton to face the Storm in their second game of the season. Despite the heavy rain, the Hornets were in confident mood after winning last week’s opening game and were hoping to carry this form into the second fixture.

From the kick off it was clear that the Hornets were "up" for this match.  The forward pack were keen to hit the ball hard, and slick distribution from dummy half ensured they ran at some great angles to constantly test the Storm defence.

This set the platform for the backs to ignore the conditions and throw the ball around with accurate passing and handling.  The Storm ran it back hard, kicked well and defended with aggression, but the Hornets went into half time 04 – 16 ahead.

The half time team talk surrounded doing the small things right, and keeping the opponents out with fast defensive line speed. HFH were in no mood to let this lead slip, and kicked on in the second half with a punishing tackling display.

They say defence wins games, and keeping a second half clean sheet set the platform for the Hornets attack.

Newton never gave up however, and their aggression in both attack and defence was a credit to them, with some really big hits as the game drew to a close. Thankfully both teams controlled this passion and HFH finished with a try on the last set.

Special thanks to HFH's Sam Weir and Daniel Miller who both played a half each for Newton Storm, and many thanks to the Storm for their hospitality.

26 Sept 10, Halton F H v's Rylands

SHARK ATTACK

Halton F H U10’s was brought down to earth with a bang following their great start to the season. The Hornets had only 9 out of 14 players available for the match, and gave a below par performance across the park, particularly in the first half where they let their concentration slip in defence far too often.

Things were slightly better after the half time break as the Hornets worked some good try scoring opportunities leading to two further tries, but they failed again at times to make all their chances count thanks to some excellent Ryland’s defence.

A disappointing performance and result for the Hornets, who will learn some valuable lessons from the game, and well done to Rylands for their excellent display.

HORNETS STING BULLDOGS

On a sunny autumn morning, ideal for rugby league, Hornets played host to near neighbours Burtonwood. The Bulldogs started off the better of the two teams regaining the ball from the kick off and putting the Hornets defence to the test straight away. However Hornets have been focussing a lot on defence in recent training sessions and this paid dividends for them, as they were able to hold out Burtonwood for the duration of the whole first half.

In attack Hornets worked hard also to try to win field position, but equally Burtonwood too defended strongly throughout, with Hornets able to only get over the whitewash with a single try.

The second half continued in a similar manner, with strong defence the order of the day. Hornets opened the scoring with a well worked try, and Burtonwood hit back straight away with a try of their own. But the Hornets regrouped, remaining focussed and disciplined, and continued with their game plan. This worked well and they stretched their lead with another well worked try. Hornets were then able to seal an excellent victory with a fourth and final try.

This was a great game of rugby league and many thanks to Burtonwood for their part in it. Hornet’s players should be proud of their performance, and if they keep working hard in training they will go on from strength to strength.

BEAT THE CLOCK

The HFH U10’s travelled the short trip for a match against Clock Face Miners U10’s on a bright sunny Sunday morning.

Following last week’s strong showing, the Hornets again started the game strongly moving into an early lead. However, Clock did not let their heads go down, and hit back with several excellent tries of their own, exposing some lazy defence and some uncharacteristic handling errors by the Hornets. As the half time whistle was blown, only a try separated the two teams.

Following some stern words from their coaches, the second half seen a significant change in the Hornets attitude on both defence and attack.

The line was more aggressive and the ball moved around a lot quicker, resulting in some excellent tries, with Clock being restricted to a single try of their own.

Whilst HFH won quite comfortably in the end, and scored some spectacular tries, it is important that the lads realise there are no easy games and they need to take the same positive attitude into each game from the first whistle to the last.

Well done and thanks to everyone at Clock Face, who never gave up through the game, and pushed Hornets all the way.

24 Oct 10, Atherton Dragons v's Halton F H

HFH U10’s travelled to Atherton on a bright sunny morning for a mouth-watering clash with the Atherton Dragons.

However Hornets were off to a lethargic start and an energetic Atherton hit them for 3 tries in a difficult first half in which Hornets struggled both on attack and defensively.

Hornets did manage to get a converted try just on half time as they worked themselves back into the game.

Questions were asked at half time of the players to cut out the uncharacteristic errors and to try and put 100% effort in and they responded with an improved second half showing. Defence was the name of the game though, on a really boggy pitch, Hornets usually fluent attack failed to make the break through.

Atherton held on for a deserved victory. The Hornets boys will take valuable lessons from this game, and learn from them as they go on through the season.

Thanks also to Atherton for once again being great hosts.

31 Oct 10, Halton F H v's Orrell St James

After last week’s defeat HFH U10’s were keen to get back to winning ways and played host to Orrell St James.

With Orrell slightly short of players, the Hornets coaches decided to experiment a little, loaning players to Orrell and allowing some of the new comers to the team to get some more game time in different positions.

This worked really well and made for an excellent first half of end to end rugby, with the Orrell players stepping up to the challenge and going in at half time slightly ahead. Credit goes to the Hornets players who adapted quickly to their new roles.

In the second half, the Hornets stepped it up considerably and were able to run out convincing winners with a clinical display of rugby league, with the forwards and backs working well together.

Credit goes to Orrell who never threw the towel in, and kept going right to the final whistle. This truly was a great advert for junior rugby league, played in the right spirit from the first kick off.

Thanks in particular to the Hornets lads who pulled on the Orrell shirts and did their club proud.
