12 Sept 10, HALton F H v's Wigan St Judes

The Hornets Under 11’s got their season underway with the eagerly anticipated visit of Wigan St Jude’s. Last season these two teams produced one of the matches of the season but this encounter didn’t quite reach the same heights.

The Hornets were very slow out of the blocks and were two tries down before they started to get into any sort of rhythm. St Jude’s capitalised on poor handling and broke away down the flanks to cross twice early on. Great credit must go to the Hornets who did not allow their heads to drop. They fought hard to get a foothold in the game and eventually got on the scoreboard, after a sweeping move, through Ben Davies.

At this point both sides were playing entertaining rugby and moving the ball well. The Hornets drew level just before half time making it all to play for in the second half.

As the second half progressed the sides traded tries in this end to end encounter. The Hornets dominated possession but St Jude’s were very dangerous on the break. As the final minute approached the Hornets found themselves trailing by a try but they were camped out on the visitor’s line. It was at this point that Will Tilleke was put through on the end of a short ball. Despite the desperate attempts of at least three defenders, he managed to ground the ball over the line.

As a season opener this was a good encounter but the Hornets need to realise they can’t afford to give teams like St Jude’s a two try start and expect to win.

Having played three matches already, St Jude’s were sharper and started really well. The Hornets were a little rusty and did well to claw themselves back into a match; both teams scored four tries each.

19 Sept 10, Wigan St Cuthberts v's Halton F H

The Hornets Under 11’s got back to winning ways this weekend with a hard fought win at Wigan St Cuthbert’s.

Like last week, the Hornets started slowly, allowing the opposition to retain possession from the kick off. This meant they were under pressure from the start. The home team got a repeat set but again the Hornets’ defence held firm.

Eventually, with the ball in hand, the Hornets started to cause some problems for the home team and went ahead with their first real attack.

However, the lead was short lived as some slack defending allowed St Cuthbert’s to cross on the next play.

Credit must go to the Hornets who responded by increasing the intensity levels and St Cuthbert’s couldn’t match them. This dominant display led to more Hornets tries being scored with the home side struggling to get out of their own half.

After a rusty performance last week, this was a much better team performance from the Hornets but further improvement will be expected from the coaching staff.
