01 Mar 09, Leigh East v's Halton F H

The HFH U12’s had to overcome a ten point deficit in the opening quarter of this match and ultimately this slow start proved costly as Leigh run out winners.

However, the game finished up five tries each and it was only conversions which separated the teams in the end, with Hornets going from strength to strength in the second half.

The Hornets struggled to defend Leigh’s tactical kicks and trailed 22 – 10 at halftime, with a brace of tries coming from Riley keeping the Hornets in the game. Parsons was successful with one conversion.

In the second half, the Hornets showed greater composure with Kirby emulating Riley for a brace of tries before the try of the match saw Avery finish off a sweeping move, where the ball passed along the whole back line for the winger to score.

The whole team contributed to what was an enthralling game of U12’s Rugby League, providing a great entertainment spectacle for all present, even though the Hornets spectators were on the losing side.

08 Mar 09, Langworthy v's Halton F H [NWC DEVELOPMENT CUP COMPETITION - QUARTER FINAL]

HHF U12’s progressed through to the Semi Final stages of the NWC Development Cup with a hard fought victory over a tough Langworthy team.

In the first half Hornets played downhill and opened their account quickly when Foster scored the first of what was to be a hat trick with a powerful burst down the left flank.

The next try followed good build up work by ‘Top Trainer’ Collins then Steadman and Fenney, who turned provider when he drew several defenders and then got a pass out for Foster to go in for his second.

Hornets continued to apply pressure and forced a turnover ball with Gallagher, Stanley, Tyrer and Avery to the fore. From this Foster completed his hat trick when he evaded several tacklers on a forty metre run to the line. This left a half time score of 00 – 12 in Hornets favour.

In the second half the Hornets had the hill to contend with and Langworthy responded scoring two well taken converted tries, thus levelling the score 12 – 12 each.

‘Top Tackler’ Kirby, returned to the field following a dead arm and this galvanised the Hornets. ‘Coaches Award’ winner Paul, along with Horabin made fine breaks resulting in a good field position such that Riley was able to capitalise on an astute kick to score.

Hornets defence stayed resolute with Salisbury developing well. The closing minutes saw Hornets put the ball through several pairs of hands for Parsons to clinch the match with a well taken try in the corner.

15 Mar 09, Oldham St Annes v's Halton F H

The HFH U12’s secured a victory over Oldham St Anne’s with what turned out to be a game of two different halves.

In the first half, the Hornets were almost flawless and this type of play resulted in a half time score line of 06 - 18 in the Hornets favour.

The last try of the half came from Paul who profited when a fine inside ball stood the defence up and the Loose Forward raced forty metres to the try line, outpacing the opposition. Man-of-the-Match Kirby kicked a fine touchline conversion.

Steadman had earlier showed great pace and power to score and this followed up from the opening try from Foster, Coaches Award winner Parsons, converting both scores.

In the second half, the Hornets concentration lapsed at times and to Oldham’s credit they took advantage of this and rallied to score four tries.

Positional changes due to an injury to Riley did not help the Hornets shape, with top tackler Gallagher, having to move out to centre and Mason coming on as hooker.

However when the Hornets retained the ball, it was Foster who notched up a second half hat trick. This followed on from great approach play from Collins, Horabin and Stanley.

Fenney had a fine all round game with a hand in several of the Hornets scores and equally Avery, Tyrer and Salisbury all contributed well in a defensive effort which always kept Oldham at bay.

22 Mar 09, Halton F H v's Blackpool

The HFH U12’s produced an accomplished display to post ten tries against a Blackpool side which although outgunned, never gave up and the spirit shown by Blackpool and willingness to carry on was a lesson for all to learn.

Hornets however where relentless in the way they went about this game and produced some great open rugby with several players offloading passes to teammates when in try scoring positions.

One such player was ‘Man-of-the-Match’ Steadman, who passed to Tyrer to score with the line open. Hat trick scorer Foster nearly made it two for the winger Tyrer, had his pass not been knocked on in a similar move.

Horabin showed both pace and power for his double score and it was fitting that the other four tries came from individuals.

‘Top Trainer’ award winner Riley opened the scoring with a fifty metre burst, and then Fenney powered over form close range as did Steadman a few minutes later. Paul completed the single try scoring with a forty metre effort.

Edwards who had missed the last couple of fixtures returned to good form and picked up the ‘Top Tackler’ award with some impressive defence, whilst Stanley won the ‘Coaches Award’, which was justly deserved after some fine performances in recent matches.

The whole squad had a good run out during this game with several interchanges taking place.

29 Mar 09, Halton F H v's Bank Quay Bulls [NWC DEVELOPMENT CUP COMPETITION - SEMI FINAL]

NWC DEVELOPMENT CUP COMPETITION – SEMI FINAL

The HFH U12’s produced their finest performance of the season to reach the ‘Final’ of the NWC Development Cup with a whole team effort which fully deserved the victory over a determined Bank Quay Bulls side.

From the opening attack, the Hornets showed their intent when the ball was swept to the right for winger Avery to go close. A similar move saw Foster score the first of three tries with a burst down the left flank.

Kirby was next to score when the Fullback received the ball on the right and beat three defenders in a powerful burst to the posts. Bank Quay responded with tries after both of these scores and it was only a second try from Kirby before half time, which gave the Hornets some breathing space at 14 – 08.

In the second half, the Hornets controlled the ball well and looked to use sets of six plays to attack, while the forwards pack started to make inroads into the Bulls defence, with Fenney and Steadman to the fore.

Ball distribution worked well from Mason to Gallagher. Skipper Edwards hit top form with astute passing which assisted in two further scores for the impressive Foster, and also accumulated in Edwards claiming a brace for himself.

The back line, from Scrum Half Parsons through the Centres Horabin and Stanley, then Wingers Tyrer and Avery, all played a major part. Whenever Bank Quay Bulls started to look dangerous, Loose Forward Paul always had an answer with an awesome all round defensive display.

Substitute Collins added real power from the bench and Johnson deputised really well for Mason, in a ‘like for like’ positional change.

If the Hornets team continue to play in this manner, they will be an awesome encounter for any opposition team.

Well done lads - only one to go!!!!!
