14 Sept 08, Pilkington Recs v's Halton F H

Both sides contributed to an entertaining opening match of the season with the result in doubt until the final few minute.

Debutant Josh Steadman crossed twice to give the HFH U12’s victory.

HFH opened the scoring when Callum Edwards squeezed in at the corner.

However, Pilks replied almost immediately, only to be out shone by the impressive teamwork of the HFH U12’s players.

Quick hands saw Adam Kirkby cross the opposition’s line unopposed.  Then Callum Edwards, who was in a good position, scooted over for another four points in the second half.

05 Oct 08, Golborne v's Halton F H

After last weekend’s defeat the HFH U12’s showed a determined team effort today with awesome defence and some great runs, which put Golborne under pressure and consequently forcing the errors.

There was great running from Zac Riley and Adam Kirby who scored a full length try in the second half, which was successfully converted by Michael Parsons.

In defence there was tremendous tackling by Adam Paul, Stephen Fenney and Sam Horabin.

Despite some great efforts by Golborne they failed to cross the Hornets line. On one occasion, when the ball was kicked high, it was Aidan Hyland who was on hand to make a safe and clean catch under his own posts, to save the Hornets from conceding a try.

12 Oct 08,, Halton F H v's Oldham St Annes

The HFH U12’s put in a superb team performance to leave a well drilled OSA scoreless and record what is their first victory against OSA for two seasons.

This result was built upon a solid defence with the forward six of Roberts, Johnson, Steadman, Riley & Paul, being superbly led by captain Callum Edwards. However, it was Josh Steadman who’s all round game claimed the Man-of-the-Match award.

The Hornets backs were all well marshalled by jack Mason at scrum half. They were aided by centre Sam Horabin who was outstanding in the tackling department and gave a great performance.

The Hornets were always keeping OSA on the back foot, ably supported in defence by Stanley, Tyrer, and Fox.

At full back, Michael Parsons put in a flawless display and his astute goal kicking provided a one hundred percent record with three conversions. Two were from forceful runs by Callum Edwards, and one from the ever dangerous Adam Kirby.

Substitutes, Caleb Salisbury, Aiden Hyland and Matthew Avery all contributed well once brought onto the field, with Avery catching the eye.

19 Oct 08, Oldham St Annes v's Halton F H [LANCASHIRE CUP ROUND ONE]

Lancashire Cup Competition -  Round One

The HFH U12’s completed a memorable league and cup double over OSA on consecutive weekends.

OSA had made three changes to the previous weekend’s team and this resulted in a tense first half period with only a try from Callum Edwards and conversion by Michael Parsons dividing the two teams.

The Hornets at times made several unforced errors, resulting in unnecessary pressure which told when OSA reduced the arrears to two points following a try early in the second half.

However this spurred on the hornets who started playing some good attacking rugby with Tom Johnson providing a good platform for Chris Roberts, Adam Paul and Sam Horabin to run off.

Fine line breaking runs from Zac Riley and Adam Kirby led to an attack where Josh Steadman latched onto a Stephen Fenney pass to go in for Hornets second try which was unconverted.

Adam Gallagher, a second half substitute, marshalled the defence well and was ably supported by fellow substitutes Matthew Avery, Caleb Salisbury and Aiden Hyland.

The closeness of the game resulted in very few scoring chances for wingmen Matthew Tyrer and George Fox, but both made up for this with a flawless defensive display.

As the game neared the end, good ground was made by Adam Kirby, Zac Riley, Stephen Fenney and Josh Steadman to produce a good attacking platform. From this Callum Edwards received the ball and outpaced the OSA defence to score his second try wide out, thus clinching the game.

26 Oct 08, Halton F H v's West Houghton Lions

The opening five minutes of this game saw West Houghton take the lead with a fine try following a dummy break through the centres. Good movement of the ball to the right wing allowed the winger to outpace the Hornets defence and post the first points.

However after this Hornets displayed a composure which has served them well this season and resulted in two tries being scored by the home side before half time. The first saw Adam Kirby collect a fine Adam Gallagher pass to use pace and power to go over.

Following on from this Callum Edwards latched onto an astute ball from Stephen Fenney and the Hornets skipper proved too powerful for the outstretched West Houghton’s defence. Michael Parsons converted the first of his afternoon’s two conversions. This left a half time score line of 10 – 04 in Hornets favour.

In the second half Daniel Meadows made his season debut on the right wing and contributed well to the team.

The Hornets produced some excellent rugby during the second half, great build up work by forwards Chris Roberts and Caleb Salisbury provided an attacking platform forty metres out. From a run around move from dummy half, the ball was moved wide to Adam Kirby who linked well with full back Michael Parsons who outpaced the defence over a twenty five metre dash to the line.

For the next try Josh Steadman supported well and then showed balance, pace and power to receive his rewards for a fine mornings effort in both attack and defence.

The three quarters quartet of Matthew Tyrer, Zac Riley, Sam Horabin and Matthew Avery, had looked dangerous all game with both Riley and Horabin making excellent bursts into the opposition territory. It was only fair then, when the next try was scored by Sam Horabin who showed a clean pair of heels to race forty metres to the try line, this followed on from a fine passing movement by both Adam Gallagher and Stephen Fenney who distributed well all game.

In the final few minutes, West Houghton lost the ball which was pounced on by Adam Kirby how showed great hands and agility to pick the ball from ground then accelerate to the line to collect the second of his brace of tries.

This capped off a good team performance where the combinations which are being worked on in training are starting to pay dividends.

02 Nov 08, Leigh Miners Rangers v's Halton F H

The HFH U12’s came away from Leigh with a hard earned victory. However, it was the home side that had the lead in the match right until the final five minutes of full time, when a break from acting half by Johnson saw him draw the defence and release a well timed pass to Edwards to score near the posts. Parsons calmly added the winning conversion to get the Hornets out of jail.

This game was not vintage Hornets as numerous errors and unforced mistakes gave Leigh the majority of the possession. Hornets found themselves 10 - 00 down after ten minutes following consecutive errors on the first three sets of six. However, on the few occasions Hornets retained the ball they profited with well taken tries.

The first of two scored by Horabin, came following a fine inside move between Fenney and Edwards. From the resulting tackle the ball was moved left where Kirby drew the defence and Horabin powered over leaving a 10 – 06 half time score.

The second half started better for the Hornets with Steadman and Paul to the fore defensively. This pressure helped when Horabin again found himself in the clear and a forty metre sprint to the line resulted in a try wide out. Kirby was just short with the conversion but this made the score 10 – 10.

Hornets tried to build momentum however for the fourth and fifth occasion in the game, Hornets tried to force the pass on the first tackle, and again fell behind 14 – 10, as Leigh capitalised on the mistakes.
In the final ten minutes Hornets increased intensity with Fenney, Kirby, Riley and Gallagher all pressing hard. This pressure resulted in a penalty being awarded and from this the Hornets scored the winning try and conversion.

09 Nov08, Halton F H v's Golborne Parkside [LANCASHIRE CUP ROUND TWO]

Lancashire Cup Competition - Round Two

The HFH U12’s Lancashire Cup campaign 2008/09 ended by the narrowest of defeats with only one try being scored by the visitors.

This was a game of rugby where no quarter was asked or given by either team and despite the low score line, it provided a superb spectacle of U12’s Rugby League.

Despite the disappointment the full Hornets squad should hold their heads high as their never say die attitude could have easily seen them clinch a vital try, even right up to the final whistle, but it was not to be.

16 Nov 08, Folly Lane v's Halton F H

HFH U12’s returned from Folly Lane with a fine victory which included first tries for the HFH Club from both Collins and Paul in their debut season.

Collins showed pace and power to take four Folly Lane defenders over the line with him to score, whilst Paul produced a blistering length of the field effort when he displayed pace, power and agility to go over.

Kirby who started the game at fullback was always dangerous producing a hat trick of tries, the pick of which saw him collect a ball from kick off, beat the defence wide out then cut back inside to score under the posts.

Riley showed good support play for his try by following up and collecting a high kick from Parsons to go over.

Gallagher wrong footed the defence with an excellent dummy and showed good strength to force his way over for a well taken try.

Horabin who switched to the Stand-Off role also supported well and latched onto the end of a fine passing movement to score wide out.

The game provided a good opportunity for squad players Salisbury, Amson, Meadows and Hyland to have a full run out and they performed well, with Hyland standing out with excellent probing runs.

Praise should also be given to all senior squad members, who were content to be substituted and whilst on the field guided the newer squad members well.

23 Nov 08, Accrington Wild Cats v's Halton F H

HFH U12’s overcame extremely wet pitch conditions to record an emphatic victory over a developing Accrington side.

It was the way in which Hornets played as a team from start to finish which was the most satisfying aspect. This resulted in eight different players crossing the try line and all but one try involved several players.

Edwards opened the scoring when a drop off move wrong footed the defence and a fine burst of speed opened the scoring. It was Edwards again who was on hand to follow up a break from Fenney and clinch the second score.

Kirby starting in the full back position repeated his performance from the previous week when he collected a ball from an opposition kick and skirted round the outstretched defence to go over.

Paul, who is also in a rich scoring vein, notched up the next try wide out. Following this, Tyrer raced under the posts after excellent passing skills saw the ball go through six pairs of hands for the speedster to profit.

Avery opened Hornets account in the second half when he received the ball wide out on the left wing and showed great strength and pace to beat off several defenders, then intelligently cutting inside to score under the posts, for a fifty meter effort.

Fenney profited next, a dummy out of acting half opened a gap and the Hornets Prop showed good pace up the hill to cross under the posts. Following this Mason crossed over after an excellent break by substitute Collins and a fine pass saw the hooker Mason in support to go over.

The final score proved to be the try of the match when several Hornets players all combined to keep the ball alive, with a key offload from Gallagher which left Steadman simply to put on the after burners and race under the posts.

This capped off a superb team performance and a man of the match display for Steadman whose efforts in defence were outstanding.

14 Dec 08, Halton F H v's West Bank Bears

The HFH U12’s completed an excellent first half to the season with a hard earned victory over derby rivals West Bank Bears.

But it was West Bank bears who opened the scoring first with a barge over try when their bigger forwards made good yards downhill.

Hornets then replied and took the lead when they played to their strengths and moved the ball wide for Edwards to race seventy metres to score. This feat was then repeated by the impressive Kirby who raced sixty metres after good approach work by the whole team. Both tries were converted by Parsons and then Gallagher respectively.

West Bank Bears then replied with a further close range try, leaving the half time score 12 – 10 to the Hornets.

In the second half the Hornets pack started closing down the opposition with Fenney, Steadman, Edwards and Collins to the fore. This provided a platform for the Hornets to start playing some great rugby with the ball going through several sets of hands for Kirby to race in for his second score.

Avery saved a certain try when his cool thinking saw him safely diffuse an astute kick into the Hornets in-goal area.

Surging runs by Riley, Gallagher, Parsons and Steadman left the Hornets with good field position. The ball was then moved to the right and Horabin showed both agility and strength to power over for a well deserved try by the centre. Parsons was successful with the conversion.

The next and final score for the Hornets resulted in Kirby completing a well earned hat-trick of tries, which again saw the Hornets Full Back on the end of a sweeping move involving several Hornets players.

It is fair to say that the whole Hornets squad played their part in this victory and overcame heavy conditions, a larger intimidating opposition and where able to produce some superb Rugby League to boot.

18 Jan 09, Pilkington Recs v's Halton F H [NWC DEVELOPMENT CUP COMPETITION - PRELIMINARY ROUND]

NORTH WEST COUNTIES DEVELOPMENT CUP COMPETITION – PRELIMINARY ROUND

The month long Christmas break had no effect on the HFH U12’s as they emphatically defeated Pilks Recs in the Preliminary Round of the NWC Cup Competition.

This was a fine team effort which resulted in eleven tries being scored by seven different players, through excellent rugby and support play.

Salisbury produced his best display for the Hornets to date, his strong running and hard work in defence earned him Top Trainer Award.

Tyrer also showed his growing confidence in both attack and defence earning him the Coaches’ Award.

Several players combined to produce a solid defence with Steadman outstanding picking up top tackler, whilst other contenders where Kirby, Stanley, Fenney, Gallagher and Edwards.

But it was the half back pairing of Parsons and Horabin who proved to be a thorn in Pilks side all game. Excellent distribution skills from Parsons combined well with Horabin’s ability to move the play wide. This stretched the opposition defence who could not hold out as Hornets teamwork resulted in several tries being scored from multiple player moves.

Riley and Paul both had fine attacking games and Avery was always in support when needed. Amson and Meadows both came on as substitutes and performed well in a great team effort.

25 Jan 09, Wigan St Cuthberts v's Halton F H

Hornets powered to a victory against a determined Wigan St Cuthbert’s side with some excellent teamwork and speed.

In the first half Captain Edwards led by example with strong running, defence and support play, and it was this support play which opened Hornets account as Edwards latched onto a pinpoint grubber kick from Parsons to score. Gallagher converted.

The next score fell to Kirby, when a typical burst from his full back berth saw him sidestep through several defenders, finally launching the final defender backwards to cross over the line. Parsons converted.

The next try came from MOM Paul, who is starting to develop well in his loose forward role; he took the ball from the base of the scrum and went through several opposition players to cross the try line.
Riley rounded off the first half scoring with a typical searing run from excellent support play, resulting in a try under the posts. Parsons converted.

The half time score line of 10 – 22 was a fair reflection with St Cuthbert’s scoring two well constructed tries.

In the second half debutant Foster replaced Salisbury and made an immediate impact in both attack and defence. From within his own half he took up the ball and powered through several lacklustre defenders to notch up his first try for the club and on this showing it will not be long before others follow. Gallagher converted.

The final score of the game came from a well worked move as Horabin, Steadman, Avery, Stanley, Tyrer combined to provide good field position. Fenney took the ball at first receiver, took on the defence drawing in several players and releasing an astute pass to Kirby who had too much pace for the stretched outfield.

Hornets kept the home side out, for the hole of the second half, and showed good composure in a testing last quarter, which is testament to the discipline and team spirit within the camp.

01 Feb 09, Halton F H v's Hindley

The HFH U12’s virtually fielded two teams against Hindley who travelled with nine players. To compensate for the Hindley reduced team numbers, the Hornets only selected nine players to start the game, with the remainder all named as substitutes.

It was soon evident that Hindley had no answer to Hornets pace and strength in depth. Paul was the first to shine, playing in a centre role he cut through a flat footed defence to score a brace of tries and would have certainly improved on this except for leaving the field early with an injury.

White, Johnson and Mason all returned from injury and it was White who had a barnstorming ten minutes before his fitness told. Salisbury played a real supporting. Johnson showed great ability when a superb dummy which nearly resulted in a try, but it was Mason who picked up the Top Trainer Award with a solid second half performance in both attack and defence.

Next on the scoreboard was Horabin who covered sixty metres on a touch line hugging run to cut inside and score near to the posts. Foster then entered the fray and from his first touch of the ball he emulated Horabin and showed blistering pace to score. Kirby was next to provide a long range effort, when he fielded a kick and rounded the defence thus ending in a half time score line of 30 – 12 to the home side.

During half time interval, several Hornets substitutions where made and Hornets started to distribute the ball well. Foster crossed for his second try, and then Parsons supported a fine break from Fenney to go over for a try and take his personal points tally for the game to eighteen, (which included seven conversions).

Top Tackler Stanley, has been in superb form during the last month and was impressive again in both attack and defence, ably supported by Tyrer, Meadows and Amson.

Kirby picked up his second try from good support play before Man-of-the Match Riley, also showed strength and determination to shake off would be tacklers and then cover sixty metres for his try.
Steadman completed the scoring when the ball was moved from right to left and he outpaced the defence to score near the corner.

The victory was never in doubt for Hornets, but Hindley should be complemented when their never say die attitude resulted in a consolation try at the end.

08 Feb 09, Halton F H v's Manchester Storm [NWC DEVELOPMENT CUP COMPETITION]

NORTH WEST COUNTIES DEVELOPMENT CUP COMPETITION

The HFH U12’s produced one of their best performances of the year to record ten unanswered tries and move into the Quarter Finals of the NWC Cup.

Kirby opened up the scoring after supporting a fine break by Paul. Man-of-the –Match, Edwards was next to score, after a burst from acting half proved too powerful for Storm to keep out.

This lead settled Hornets nerves and resulted in a purple patch of open rugby when Steadman, Horabin, Avery and Kirby all scored tries. Top tackler Fenney played a pivotal role in many of the Hornets attacking play which left the halftime score line 26 – 00.

In the second half Hornets never let up and this determination to succeed was highlighted when Paul chased down a fine break by the Storm Full Back to keep the visitors scoreless.

Top Trainer – Gallagher, (who had switched to the centre position), was next to score and then Paul had his afternoons efforts rewarded, after a fine break from the base of the scrum saw the loose forward cover fifty metres to the try line.

Kirby collected his hat trick try and the Coaches Award, after a trademark collection of the ball in the deep, saw the Full Back race sixty metres in a touchline hugging run.

It was left to the improving Foster to burst through the defence and pick up the final score of the day.
Credit should go to all the Hornets players for this total team performance, with Stanley, Tyrer, Meadows, Riley, Parsons and Mason all contributing well.

22 Feb 09, Halton F H v's Langworthy

Langworthy Reds proved to be the toughest opponents the HFH U12’s have faced for a few weeks. This showed when Langworthy opened up lead of ten points in the first quarter of the game, this on the back of some good tactical kicking and errors made by the home side.

It took the forwards White, (Top Tackler), Edwards, Steadman, Fenney and Foster to develop field position with some strong defence. Then after some settled drives, Foster opened Hornets account with a powerful burst which Parsons produced a good conversion from when kicking into a strong wind.

This score rallied the home side and shortly afterwards ‘Top Trainer’ Paul, evaded several defenders on a run to the try line which started on the left wing and ended up with a try on the right wing. This left a halftime score of ten points each.

The second half proved to be even tighter and only saw one further try when Kirby burst through from fullback to race forty metres to the Langworthy try line. Although Hornets had several more breaks, they could not extend the lead and credit should be extended to Langworthy who never gave up the game. They displayed this by tracking down several breakaway Hornets players.

Horabin took the ‘Man-of-the-Match’ award with an outstanding defensive display, with Tyrer also putting in a good performance to pick up the ‘Coaches Award’.

The effort was never in doubt for Hornets and the whole team contributed to the victory, however, a return to set play patterns with multiple players in attack is a must for progression.
