12 Sept 10, West Bank Bears v's Halton F H

The HFH U12’s played the first game of the season against local rivals West Bank Bears.

Both sides started off at a frantic pace, which resulted in both sides spilling a lot of ball early on. Scores were level for most of the first half until HFH finally broke the deadlock with a try from Jack Jolly, which he then converted to make the score 06 - 00.

HFH continued to press and should have gone further ahead after missed tries from Jack Phillips and Daniel Simpson as they both dropped the ball over the line. Just before half time, West Bank got back in to the game with a try to make it 04 - 06.

In the second half, both sides continued to drop the ball, but HFH continued to plug away with great defensive efforts from Dominic Droogan, Kenny Curlett, Jack Jolly, and Charlie McDonnell.

West Bank finally sealed the game with 10 minutes to go with a dubious try in the corner in which the touch judge raised his flag but the referee signalled for a try to clinch the game.

Special mention goes to Liam Walsh in making his debut with some barn storming runs.

Going forward HFH need to work on their attacking play, however a great team effort and a positive start to the season. A big well done goes to all the lads.

19 Sept 10, Halton F H v's Latchford Albion

HFH U12’s welcomed Latchford for their first home game of the season in horrible wet and windy conditions, but both sides tested each other early on with bone crunching tackles going in from both sets of forwards.

Latchford finally broke the deadlock when their Full Back stormed through for a 00 - 06 lead. HFH would not lie down for long and put pressure on Latchford with a good kicking game and strong defence. Latchford resolve finally broke when Jack Jolly found a gap in their defence and sprinted in for a try to reduce the deficit to make the score line 04 - 06.

In the second half HFH made some changes and introduced Liam Walsh and Evan Bullen who soon made an impact. Latchford then scored another try to lead 04 - 10 but to Hornets credit they never panicked and continued to pressure the Latchford line with some strong runs from Liam Walsh and Thomas Attwood, backed up by Jack Jolly and Andrew Clarke.

The Hornets got their reward for constant pressure when Jack Phillips scooted in from close range to level up the score line at 10 apiece.

The Hornets were now relentless in attack and with just 5 minutes to go and with some fast line passing, Jack Jolly found a gap to score and clinched the game for HFH.

This was another good performance from the Hornets who are working really hard in defence and are cutting their errors down in attack to produce a near faultless display in bad weather conditions.

The Hornets were really served well by backs Daniel Simpson, Andrew Clarke and Jack Jolly, not forgetting the strong running forwards of Kenny Curlett, Liam Walsh, Dom Droogan and Stuart Tyghe.

This performance really does deserve a big ‘well done’ to all the lads.

26 Sept 10, Ince Rosebridge v's Halton F H

The Hornets U12’s hit the road this week after a great win against Latchford last week with a trip to a Group A side Ince Rosebridge for what would be a tough encounter.

Both sides tested each other early on but Rosebridge took control early on and raced into a 16 - 00 lead after HFH were punished for non competition of sets and mistakes.

In the second half HFH regrouped with Jack Jolly, Charlie McDonnell and James Owen leading all the way. HFH were now starting to get on top with strong running forwards Liam Walsh, Dom Droogan, Thomas Attwood and Kenny Curlett punching holes into the Rosebridge defence.

HFH finally got there reward when Liam Walsh knocked off several defenders to score out wide to make it 16 - 04. HFH became more confident with Jack Jolly getting repeat sets from kicks with some great defensive work from the Hornets.

Rosebridge finally had the last say with a late try to seal the game for the home team.

This was a great team effort from the Hornets lads who will take a lot of positives from the game.

Stand out players for HFH were Andrew Clarke, Jack Jolly, Kenny Curlett and Liam Walsh.

03 Oct 10, Halton F H v's Leigh East

HFH U12’s produced a fantastic performance in wet and atrocious conditions to overcome a physical Leigh East side with a near faultless display of attacking rugby and solid defence to the spoils.

Both sides tested each other early on but Hornets had to withstand early Leigh East pressure with some outstanding defence. Hornets finally started to turn the screw with forwards Liam Walsh, Stuart Tyghe, Dom Droogan and Thomas Attwood punching holes in the Leigh East defence.

HFH soon scored after a barn stopping run from Liam Walsh to lead 06 - 00.

Hornets continued to throw everything at Leigh East with half backs Jack Jolly and Charlie McDonnell orchestrating things, ably supported by Jack Phillips.

Just before half time, Liam Walsh scored again to go in at 12 - 00 at the break.

HFH continued to apply the pressure in the second period getting on top with fast play the balls and a good kicking game from Jack Jolly.

Hornets soon scored further tries from Joe Purcell who managed to put two behind the line. Andrew Clarke, Jack Jolly and Charlie McDonnell were pick of the punch with forwards Liam Walsh, Thomas Attwood, James Owen, Stuart Tyghe and Dom Droogan running and tackling superbly all game.

This was a faultless display of rugby league at its best by the Hornets with a master class display in defence.

10 Oct 10, Crosfields v's Halton F H [LANCS CUP COMPETITION RND 1]

[Original fixture had been Halton F H v's Blackbrook Royals]

LANCASHIRE CUP – Round One

The HFH U12’s travelled the short distance to near neighbours Crosfields for the opening round of the Lancashire cup with expectations high after a crushing win against Leigh East the week before.

From the start, the HFH U12’s made their first mistake to which Crosfields gained the upper hand which meant Hornets struggled to get in to the game early on. Crosfields were the first to score from a lucky kick which bounced back inside for their winger to score wide out to make it 06 - 00 to the home side.

Hornets slowly started to get some rhythm and complete sets, which gained them some momentum. From an attack close to the Crosfields line, Jack Phillips found himself in some space and his run found a good pass to Jack Jolly who forced his way over to pull the scores back to 06 - 04 at half time.

In the second half, the Hornets early errors cost them dearly and they found themselves under severe pressure which resulted in another try close to the post which put Crosfields ahead by 10 - 04.

Hornet’s forwards finally started to gain some control in midfield to put Crosfields under some returned pressure, with strong running from Kenny Curlett, Liam Walsh, Stuart Tyghe and Dom Droogan, all working their socks off. Hornets came close to scoring when Evan Bullen went close and Joe Purcell and the probing of Charlie McDonnell and Daniel Simpson were stopped short of the try line.

Crosfields again came roaring back and another kick to the corner was fumbled which left Crosfields in front by 14 - 04.

Hornets now had to work hard with time running out and some strong carries from Thomas Attwood, James Owen, and Evan Bullen forced Hornets up field. From this position, the next score was to come from HFH when Jack Jolly’s delicate kick was pounced on by speedy centre Joe Purcell to score wide to make the score 14 - 08.

With minutes to go Hornets were awarded a penalty 25 metres out from the Crosfields line. A grand stand finish to this game was on the cards but for the referee blowing up on the second tackle for full time, and the exit of the Hornets from the Lancashire Cup Competition.

Hornets tried in vain, with hard work and commitment but were undone by too many mistakes to win this tie.
