06 Sept 09, Shevington Sharks v's Halton F H
The HFH U13’s produced a very disciplined performance to claim two points in the opening encounter of this NWC U13’s League One match.
Throughout the game, the Hornets defence was dominant and this was rewarded with a nil score line from the home side, which is a credit to the whole of the HFH team.
The Hornets pack laid a great platform with Mannion and Jacks on debut following the lead of Edwards, Fenney and Paul. Steadman opened the scoring in the first half when he showed excellent pace and confidence to take on and round the fullback for a fine try.
For the second try Kirby put up a high kick which Richardson, (also on debut), latched onto and beat the covering defence to cross the whitewash. This left Hornets with a half time lead of eight points.
Second half subs Collins, Foster, Gallagher and Mason boosted Hornets defensive and attacking attributes and Foster was unlucky not to get on the score sheet when a searing break ended when a last grasp tackle prevented a certain try.
Several attacks by Riley, Horabin & Paul gained good ground and following a scrum, Edwards who had moved out to centre stretched the defence to create sufficient room for the ever present Kirby to claim the final score of the game.
Man of the match was awarded to Richardson whose overall game was excellent, but in fairness all seventeen Hornets players contributed to a well earned victory.

13 Sept 09, Halton F H v's Wigan St Judes
HFH U13’s ground out a hard fought victory against a determined Wigan St Jude’s side and only claimed the points in the last five minutes of the game when a powerful burst and pass from Fenney laid the platform for Edwards to go in near to the left hand touchline.
Prior to this several unforced handling errors from both sides led to a stop/start encounter which left both sets of supporters anxious as the game see - sawed.
The Hornets pack, well led by Mannion, Collins, Foster & Steadman, contributed to the victory as did centres Riley and Horabin who stuck well to a tough task of dealing with Jude’s three quarter line. However, the Hornets need to work on field organisation and speed of passing from the play the ball, as both of these areas where lacking.
Richardson on his home debut for the Hornets claimed a brace of tries the second of which followed on from an excellently weighted kick from Kirby which saw the Standoff chase down the ball and make a superb one handed catch and race 40 metres to the try line.
Man-of-the-Match was awarded to Edwards who contributed in both defence and attack and sealed victory with a well taken try.

20 Sept 09, Waterhead v's Halton F H
The HFH U13’s produced an error free first half display of rugby league excellence to take control of this league fixture, the result hitting 00 - 32 points by half time.
The ball control and retention was superb. This backed up with some very powerful running by the forwards Mannion, Steadman, Fenney, Jacks, Edwards & Foster, who all laid a platform for halfbacks Parsons and Richardson to run some excellent plays.
Fullback Kirby along with centres Horabin & Riley and wingers Tyrer & Stanley always looked dangerous with two out of the five getting on the score sheet.
Substitutes Johnson, Mason & Gallagher all contributed well with Geraghty making his debut for the Hornets with a solid performance.
In the second half Waterhead raised their game and should take credit for posting sixteen points in reply to a further ten points for the Hornets.
Man-of-the-Match was awarded to Foster, whose strength and speed earned two tries and his overall defensive effort was very good.

27 Sept 09, Halton F H v's Thatto Heath Crusaders
At the start of this match both the Hornets and Thatto were unbeaten in the league with this game promising to be a close encounter and for the opening stanza both sides competed evenly.
Hornets then started to control their attacking sets and Richardson scored the first of a hat trick of tries when he followed up a kick to reclaim the ball and race under the posts. The second of his tries came from a Kirby kick when Foster showed blistering pace to chase down the kick, scoop the ball up at pace and offload to the supporting Richardson.
Prior to this Edwards, (who moved to centre to cover for injured Horabin), collected a couple of tries, the pick of these saw the Hornets skipper latch onto a ball 40 metres out and back himself as he raced through a gap in the Thatto defence to score under the posts. This resulted in a half time score line of 22 points to 0 in the Hornets favour.
The Hornets front six started to dominate and a typically strong drive from Fenney put Thatto on the back foot, from the play the ball Foster powered through several defenders on a 60 metre run to the line and effectively closing out the game for the Hornets. All that was left was for Richardson to complete his hat trick when he jinked over from close range.
It is a testament of the whole teams’ efforts that Thatto could only post a consolation try in the closing minute of the game.
‘Man-of-the-Match’ was awarded to Mannion who started the game strongly and laid a good platform for the whole game, Avery was very strong in defence and Steadman got through a tremendous amount of work in attack and defence.

04 Oct 09, Chorley Panthers v's Halton F H
At the start of this match only two points separated both teams in the league standings and when Hornets went behind after five minutes to a well taken Chorley try; everyone knew a tough encounter was unfolding. Hornets however showed great resilience and applied pressure for a fifteen minute period during which time Edwards and then Horabin scored leaving the half time score 04 – 08 in the Hornets favour.
Hornets started the second half brightly and when a speculative attack was kicked on by Mannion, Edwards reacted first to pounce for his second try, Richardson converted under the posts. At 04 – 14 a further score for Hornets would have secured the game but Chorley came back in fine style with two tries to draw the game level at 14 – 14 apiece.
Some superb running from the Hornets pack of Fenney, Mannion, Steadman, Foster, Gallagher and Paul gained field position and an intelligent kicking game from Richardson caused havoc in the Chorley defence. This allowed the Stand Off to dart over swinging the game back in Hornets favour.
From the next attack Jacks was caught agonisingly short of the Chorley try line but the victory was secured when Foster outpaced all the Chorley defence with an intelligent run to score wide out and seal the victory.
All the Hornets team played well with special mention to Mason who deputised at scrum half when Parsons went off injured early in the game, and Kirby whose defence at fullback has been excellent all season and was unlucky to have a try ruled out for a 50/50 offside decision.
Man-of-the-Match was awarded to Fenney who never took a backward step throughout the whole match and led the pack by example. Foster was very strong in both defence and attack, and Horabin had a great game returning from injury and scoring a well taken try.

11 Oct 09, Halton F H v's Crosfields
As the rain lashed down over Wilmere Lane Sports Ground, the HFH U13’s produced a superbly controlled team performance to run out worthy winners in this Division One League match.
First on the score sheet was Foster (who is in a rich vein of scoring), when he powered over for the first of his two tries. The second try came from Richardson, when the Stand Off raced after an up field kick and displayed superb ball control kicking the rugby ball on a number of times before collecting to post the second score. This left the half time score 08 – 00 in the Hornets favour.
In the second half the Hornets power and strength began to take toll, with several attacking runs by Mannion, Steadman, Fenney, Edwards and Horabin all gaining good field position. From these positions Foster, Riley and Kirby all profited with well taken tries.
Prior to this, Jacks Parsons and Richardson had all distributed the ball excellently, in consideration of the conditions. Gallagher tackled like a Trojan when he entered the fray and Paul also stood out in both attack and defence.
Special mention must go to all the Hornets squad players namely Salisbury, Geraghty, Johnson, Hughes and Meadows whose contribution to the overall team in invaluable.
Man- of-the-Match was awarded to Edwards for a combination of unselfish running, potent attacks and strong defence. Riley had a particularly good game returning the ball and took a well taken try, and Stanley contributed with a great effort in both attack and defence.

18 Oct 09, Halton F H v's Leigh East
The HFH U13’s fixture against opponents Leigh East continued on from last season’s games as both sides had been promoted into Division One and as such great rivalry existed between the two teams.
It was the Hornets who started well, when Foster burst through the Leigh defence to go under the posts and score. Leigh responded with two well taken tries before Edwards replied for the Hornets, when the ball was moved through several hands. However, Leigh had the final say in the first half leaving the half time score 12 – 14 to the visitors.
Following the half time break, the Hornets regrouped their efforts and following some strong drives by the Forwards with Mannion, Fenney and Geraghty to the fore, the ball was distributed to the left with Kirby linking well from Fullback to make a try scoring pass for Fosters second try.
The Hornets were never allowed to settle into a rhythm with Leigh’s tactics being to interrupt and spoil at every opportunity, thus creating frustration for both players and spectators. Fortunately, when a reefed ball was scooped up and passed onto Edwards, the Hornets skipper raced over the try line putting the Hornets six points in front at 20 – 14.
A final twist in the tale of this game occurred when a ball steal resulted in Leigh gaining position close to the Hornets line, and a try and conversion for the visitors left the game drawn at 20 - 20
‘Man-of-the-Match’ was awarded to Jacks whose running from acting half was superb and his overall contribution to the game was good. Foster was always dangerous in attack and Geraghty showed up well in his first full game for the Hornets.

25 Oct 09, Halton F H v's Orrell St James
The seventeen players representing the HFH U13’s this week can all hold their heads high in the knowledge that even in defeat they performed admirably and this game could have gone either way, even right up to the final whistle.
However at times it was the individual desire of each player to win that left players taking the ball in isolation. This made it easier for Orrell to defend and as such, once the Hornets understand this and worked as a unit, their efforts will no doubt be rewarded.
The effort of every player was good and none more so than Edwards who opened the scoring from a fine move. This involved a dummy drop-off which opened a gap for the Stand Off to score.
Nothing should be taken away from Orrell side though who performed superbly with their Prop Forward outstanding, scoring two tries, one either side of half time.
The Hornets led at half time 04 – 06 but playing uphill in the second half was always going to be a tough ask for the Hornets. When Orrell took a lead of 12 – 06 it showed great team spirit to come back and score, unfortunately Kirby could not convert his own try which was wide out and the game ended 12 – 10.
‘Man- of- the- Match’ was awarded to Kirby who took a well taken try, positioned himself well and has contributed at a high standard all season. Foster’s cover tackling was outstanding and Gallagher showed superb tackling technique, and apart from missing part of the game through injury, would have no doubt pressed hard for the main award.

01 Nov 09, Wigan St Judes v's Halton F H
The HFH U13’s returned to winning ways in the league with a solid performance over a well drilled St Jude’s side. However, a half time score line of four points to six in Hornets favour showed how close this contest was and it was only in the last ten minutes of the game that the Hornets pulled away to post a 04 – 20 final score.
To be fair though, early decisions did not go Hornets way and credit must be given to the team for keeping composure and grinding out a win. A win which was laid on by hard work from the forwards of Fenney, Johnson, Jacks, Mannion, Foster, Steadman, Gallagher, Collins & Geraghty, and the guile of the backs in Kirby, Paul, Horabin, Riley, Avery, Edwards, Richardson & Parsons.
The scores came from Foster who continued his rich vein of scoring with two well taken tries. Edwards settled the spectator’s nerves when he outpaced the St Jude’s defence to score wide out and a kick combination between Kirby and Richardson saw the scrum half make up for his earlier disallowed try.
Considering the conditions, the Hornets set completion rate was excellent during this match and all seventeen players contributed to a well controlled and deserved victory.
‘Man-of-the-Match’ was awarded to Mannion who laid a solid platform in both defence and attack throughout the whole of the game. Richardson, returning from a three week injury layoff, marshalled the team well and completed some good tactical kicks. Steadman showed both strength and speed down the right flank and was always a threat when the Hornets attacked.

NORTH WEST COUNTIES Cup Competition – Round 1
The HFH U13’s travelled to Rochdale in the first round of the North West Counties U13’s Cup and matched their Premiership opponents for all but the final five minutes of this game, when Rochdale ran in three tries to seal a comfortable win.
Nevertheless, the score line did not reflect the effort put in by the Hornets and none more so than Man-of-the-Match, Daniel Richardson. Daniel’s never say die spirit kept the Rochdale Mayfield Stand-off battling to the end of the game, both in attack and defence.
The Hornets had their moments in this game when Foster scored a breath taking try from within his own half, followed by Fenney who took three defenders with him as the Prop-forward posted his first try for the Hornets this season.
Once this try was scored, the next play resulted in a disallowed double movement try against the Hornets. Had this been given, a different result may have occurred.
A key injury to Riley (who was having a fine game in defence), resulted in Edwards moving to the centre with the versatile skipper always available to play to the best of his ability for the Hornets. Jacks and Mannion worked tirelessly but in the end, the Hornets ran out of steam and Rochdale proved to be worthy winners.

07 Feb 10, Halton F H v's Shevington Sharks
10:30am KICK-OFF.
The HFH U13’s got their league performances back on track with this well executed win over Shevington. This followed a frustrating period before and after the Christmas break.
Man-of-the-Match Jacks, was moved out of his usual role as Hooker into Scrumhalf and this proved pivotal to getting the ball wider for the Hornets pack to run off. Jacks overall unselfish work rate being exemplary.
Also, the contribution made by both Johnson and then Mason should not be overlooked, with good energy being shown by both players to full fill the acting half role.
Foster gave the Hornets the kick start they needed, when he powered through the Shevington defensive line to score, with Edwards emulating this on the right hand side flank soon afterwards.
As a team, the Hornets controlled their sets of six much better than recent games with the forwards of Mannion, Fenney, Steadman and Collins providing a vital platform to build upon. From one such platform, Richardson attacked down the right hand side and timed a perfect pass for Foster to collect, and tally a total of four tries. This resulted in a well earned second place M-o-M Award.
Fullback Kirby bounced back to form and was always a threat to Shevington, with ball in hand, and gained a well deserved third place M-o-M.
Overall, this was a good team performance with positive signs of repeating early season form.

14 Feb 10, Thatto Heath Crusaders v's Halton F H
The final score line in this game did not reflect how tough this encounter with Thatto Heath really was. It is a credit to the whole Hornets defensive effort to keep the home side down to two scores, with the first ten minutes of the game remaining even with both sides posting a score and conversion.
Foster opened the Hornets account, which proved to be the first of four touchdowns for the Second Rower, as he continued his prolific try scoring run. What has also been pleasing of late is the overall contribution in both attack and defence.
The second score came from Man-of-the-Match Horabin, who pounced on a dropped ball in the Hornets own ten metre area. The Centre then raced fully ninety metres to score under the opposition posts, totally taking the wind out of Thatto Heaths sails, and turning it in Hornets favour.
Great approach work by the Hornets team as a whole laid the platform for Foster to post further scores, and when Richardson looped a long pass out to Fenney, the supporting Fullback, Kirby, was on hand to seal the victory.
Wingers Tyrer who was replaced by Parsons at half time, centre Riley and in particular third placed M-o-M Paul, all had fine games for the Hornets. This effort was ably supported by Jacks, Johnson, Gallagher, Steadman and Edwards.
The pick of the forwards was Mannion, who received second place M-o-M for a courageous performance throughout the whole match. Salisbury and Collins shored up the defence towards the end of the game.

The HFH U13’s chose this promotion clinching match to produce one of the finest displays of coordinated rugby all season. From 1 to 17, every one contributed with each individual player performing the task their position demands superbly.
Man-of-the-Match and Skipper Edwards led by example as yet once again this versatile player moved out to the Centre position in replacement for Horabin, who had fallen ill. Edwards scored following-up a deft kick, and was always strong in defence. He was ably supported by his opposite Centre Riley, whose tackling technique has been a highlight in recent matches.
The Hooker/Halfback quad of Mason/Johnson/Gallagher/Jacks, all provided a superb platform for the powerhouse Front Rowers Fenney and Mannion to run off, with Steadman and Foster ready to drive home the territorial advantage. Foster yet again proved unstoppable as he posted a further three touchdowns to his season total.
In between the power plays, great guile was firstly demonstrated by Kirby whose exquisite kick was supported and collected on the full by Standoff Richardson, to race in for a try. But this was merely the starter, as the main course came when Richardson displayed fantastic footwork to step off both feet on a thirty metre run to the Waterhead try line, bamboozling half of the Waterhead team en route.
Third placed M-o-M award went to Steadman, who was very solid in defence throughout the whole game. Joint second place M-o-M went to Foster and Richardson.
The whole team contributed to an outstanding promotion clinching victory. With one more league game to go, a win will clinch the League Championship title for the HFH U13’s.

The HFH U13's crowned North West Counties League DIVISION ONE CHAMPIONS.
The Hornets U13’s completed an outstanding season with a magnificent victory away at Crosfields, to become League Division One ‘Champions’.
The Hornets account was opened when the mercurial Foster latched onto an inside ball from Fenney and powered forty metres to the try line.
Next scores came via a brace of tries from the Hornets skipper Edwards. This involved the ball passing through several sets of hands with Jacks, Steadman, Mannion, Mason, Riley and Kirby prominent.
Half time was reached with the score 00 - 14 in Hornets favour.
Crosfields started the second half strongly but the Hornets rock solid defence, through Centre Horabin, Wingers Tyre & Paul and substitutes Johnson, Geraghty, Collins and Parsons to the fore, kept the home side at bay.
When Foster pounced onto a dropped Crosfields ball to post his second score Hornets had one hand on the title.
This became two hands when Richardson completed a fine all round performance with some individual brilliance as the Standoff followed his own chip kick up, to kick through and beat the defence to the touch down.
All of the Hornets squad have contributed throughout the season and special mention should be given to the players who were not picked in the seventeen today namely Stanley, Avery, Hughes, Salisbury, Meadows and 18th man Gallagher - it takes a complete team effort to be successful and credit goes to everyone in the squad.
