A slight reshuffle in the Hornets ranks paid dividends as they came up with an emphatic victory over Wigan St Pats.

Dean Ainsworth collected the MOTM award for a tireless display in both attack and defence, supported superbly by Alex Clare and Top Tackler Conah Keenan.

Other notable performances came from Sam Osbourne and Jonny Wood in the pack.

From the kick off the Hornets put themselves under pressure after surrendering possession and had to withstand the Pats onslaught.

Dean Ainsworth produced a great tackle to win back the ball and on four minutes, Alex Clare raced eighty metres from the base of the scrum to open the scoring. Dean Ainsworth added the extras from bang in front.

Three minutes later, Alex Clare grabbed his second after Ainsworth had sent Tom Murtha on a great run down the left, and from the restart Sam Osbourne picked up superbly and outpaced the Wigan cover from sixty metres out. Both conversion attempts were missed.

Wigan St Pats hit back after a succession of penalties which were needlessly given away by the home side, and the visitors took advantage with a try in the corner. The HUF U14’s faced up to the Wigan attack and defended well to finish the first half in front at 14 - 04.

In the second half a great chase and tackle from Alex Clare forced a goal line drop out which landed into the hands of Sam Osbourne who blasted over the line injuring himself in the process. Dean Ainsworth added the extras.

Dean Ainsworth was next to get over after an intercept and winning the race for the Wigan line from seventy metres out. Joe Kelly slotted the ball over for another two points.

An Ainsworth Clare switch resulted in a try for Jonny Wood on the right and the same combination produced Woods’ second try, this time on the left with Liam Mercer converting.

The Hornets showed a big improvement on last week’s display and with some hard work should produce even better performances.

The Hornets travelled to Chorley with four key players missing and met a very strong Panthers side who totally out-gunned the visitors.

Despite an eight try salvo from the home side the Hornets showed a better team spirit than in previous weeks. Man of the Match Dean Ainsworth lead with a courageous captains display and was superbly supported by Conah Keenan who was a constant threat with his powerful running and Jonathan Wood was terrific in the loose forward role.

Both shared the coaches’ award.

Tom Murtha got the biggest cheer of the day from both sets of supporters for his drop goal which ensured the Hornets got on the scoreboard.

NORTH WEST COUNTIES CUP - Round Two.

Hornets welcomed back Sam Osbourne and Alex Clare to the team despite both carrying slight injuries in this North West Counties Cup 2nd round clash.

Leigh East started like a house on fire and took advantage of some sloppy play from the Widnes side.

East’s’ were 10 nil to the advantage after five minutes and a drubbing looked on the cards. The home side stretched their lead to 14 points before the interval but the introduction of Alex Clare at half time gave the Hornets a boost.

Conah Keenan was the first to go over after great work from Luke Farrell with Dean Ainsworth adding the extras.

Confidence was rising through the Hornets ranks and it showed in their play as they produced good attacking rugby with one such passage producing the next score; Matty Freeman going over after great hands down the line. The goal conversion attempt was missed.

The tremendous fight back was complete when Alex Clare went on a blockbusting run and scored on the right to equalise but the conversion fell short taking the game into ‘golden point’ extra time.

The Hornets however gave away possession and then territory cheaply to Leigh East and after a great break by East’s’ from deep in their own half and despite a try saving tackle from Alex Clare the next play resulted in a drop goal to send East’s’ into the next round.

Notable performances came from Dean Ainsworth (MOTM), Luke Farrell and Conah Keenan shared the coaches award and most improved was Lee Clarke-Rogers. Most tackles Conah Keenan.

The HFH U14’s welcomed back Alex Clare and Dean Ainsworth to the side and gave debuts to Scott Devers and Connor Egan in their fixture at top of the table Pilks.

The home side showed just why they are favourites to go back to the premier division but the Hornets didn’t help their cause with a performance littered with errors.

The Hornets lack of possession and field position told as the Cougars scored from easy positions in the first period. The game was only six minutes old when on the last tackle a scoot close to the line caught the Hornets napping.

Then on fourteen minutes Pilks found a weak point in the Hornets defensive line and took advantage to score again.

Shortly after, Pilks scored again with quick hands down the line to make the score line read 16 - 00.

After a good talking to by the coaches and the introduction of Alex Clare from the bench the Hornets started to fight back. A melee just before half time ended with a player from each side being sent to the sin-bin.

The second half was just three minutes old when Alex Clare scored a long range try under the sticks but the goal attempt failed. The Hornets started to grow in confidence and it was Clare who scored again this time from an interception. Luke Farrell added the extras to make it a six point ball game.

The remainder of the half was a real tussle as both sides fought for the next score but neither were successful despite the Hornets coming close on a couple of occasions.

Dean Ainsworth was MOTM after a terrific tackling performance in the loose forward role,

Conah Keenan continued his fine run of form to collect the Coaches award,

Scott Devers showed true promise for the future, Owen Pettigan was solid at the back and it was great to see Alex Clare back in the side, although sustaining an injury and having to leave the field was a worry.

18 Jan 09, Halton F H v Orrell St James [NATIONAL CUP ROUND ONE]

NATIONAL CUP COMPETITION – ROUND ONE

The Hornets put on a brave show against Lancashire cup finalists Orrell St. James the score line not truly reflective of the effort from the home side.

Alex Clare claimed the MOTM with a true captain’s display producing a few try saving tackles, whilst Jonny Wood had a storming game making several breaks and a strong defensive display to earn the coaches award. Top tackler was Dean Ainsworth with a tireless performance.

The visitors were a class act but the Hornets matched them during the opening quarter and it took some great play from the Saints speedy centre to break the deadlock with two quick fire tries both finished under the sticks.

The Hornets did well to battle back and it was the final play of the half that produced another try for Orrell to take the score to 16 - 0.

Orrell scored another two tries before the Hornets produced their best spell of the match with some constant pressure on the visitor’s line. Orrell showed their quality however with some magnificent defence to deny the Hornets as Thomas Dolby, Alex Clare and Jonny Wood all crossed but couldn’t finish.

Thirteen man Hornets were finally sunk with two late tries as Orrell brought on fresh legs during the latter stages of the game.

The team spirit and discipline from the Hornets was a massive positive with Anthony Armstrong and Mike Jones also catching the eye.

01 Feb 09, Wigan St Patricks v's Halton F H

The HFH U14’s arrived in Wigan with only nine players after a car containing Team Coach, Chris Kelly and four players broke down on the M6 motorway. The Pats coach sportingly offered to play the game as nine-a-side.

The Hornets started in a very negative frame of mind and were sixteen nil down after just ten minutes. The Hornets started to gain confidence when Alex Clare made a superb break only to be held up over the line. On the next tackle Jonny Wood crossed for a four pointer.

Dean Ainsworth forced a pass which went astray and the Pats took advantage from the scrum to cross for a six pointer. Ainsworth then made amends with two passes out of the top drawer, first to Alex Clare and two minutes later to Jonny Wood, both racing in from seventy metres to take the half-time score to 20 - 14 in favour of the Pats.

The Hornets continued the pressure in the second period and good work from Anthony Armstrong, Mitch Dyas and Alex Clare set up a good position for Dean Ainsworth to dummy his way over for a try. The conversion attempt was missed.

Saint Pats then stretched their lead to six points with a try and could have gone further ahead when their scrum half crossed the white stripe only for his opposite number Dean Ainsworth to knock the ball from his grasp. From the resulting twenty metre tap, Alex Clare found space out wide and finished superbly under the sticks. Ainsworth added the extras to equalise at 24 – 24.

From the restart, Dean Ainsworth collected the ball and stepped through the advancing defence to score from eighty metres. Owen Pettican popped over the conversion.

The Hornets struck almost immediately after when good work from the forwards put Ainsworth in a great position and he sliced through the Wigan defence after a great dummy to register his hat-trick. Alex Clare added the extras before finishing off the home sides challenge with another two tries goaled by Anthony Armstrong and Adam Hamnett-Dolby.

22 Feb 09, Ashton Bears v's Halton F H

Twelve man HFH U14’s started awfully, simple errors and sloppy tackling enabled the home side to streak to a 28 nil half time lead.

After the break, and a few positional changes, the Hornets pulled their socks up and played to their ability; good running and some clever plays unlocked Ashtons' defence. Jonny Wood made a break from the scrum and Conah Keenan took advantage to fly over the line for four  points. Dean Ainsworth converted to make it six.

Keenan and Wood were involved in the lead up to the next try as Dean Ainsworth showed a touch of class to dummy and step his way over for a  try. Anthony Armstrong added the extras.

The Hornets pulled it back to a ten point ball game with a superb eighty metre try from Alex Clare, with the half back partnership of Ainsworth and Wood combining well at a scrum to put Clare racing through.

Ashton replied with sustained pressure on the Hornets line and despite heroic tackling, the visitors succumbed to a dubious try. Not to be outdone the Hornets hit back and good passing from Wood and Clare put Ainsworth through.

On the next tackle Owen Pettican scooted over in fine style. Ainsworth converted.

Eventually Hornets ran out of steam and Ashton scored a late try to seal it.

The score line flattered the Home side who had more than the one man advantage with plenty of fresh legs coming off the bench.

Man- of-the-Match was Conah Keenan, with the Coaches Award going to Dean Ainsworth who also topped the tackle count. Notable performances came from Alex Clare, Jonny Wood and Owen Pettican.
