05 Apr 09, Halton F H v's Saddleworth
For the second week running, the HFH U9’s took on opponents from the Oldham area, and this week it was Saddleworth who visited Wilmere Lane Sports Ground.
Fifteen HFH U9’s players had some rugby league time today and never disappointed the spectators.
On their arrival, it was clear to see that Saddleworth’s squad comprised of plenty of big lad's.
So the main focus for the Hornets players into today's game was going to be defensive work. After last week’s training sessions with the tackle bags, the Hornets players now had the opportunity to put all the coaching into practice.
The Hornets efforts today were brilliant and in the defensive line, the HFH U9’s players, time and time again, got in the Saddleworth face's and never gave them an inch.
The reward for all these efforts was that the Hornets managed to keep Saddleworth at bay and prevented them from scoring a single try throughout the whole game. To keep any side ‘try-less’ at whatever age or ability, is a superb achievement.
With the ball in hand the HFH U9’s made some silly and unforced errors, which is uncharacteristic of the Hornets side. Conceding silly knock-on’s and trying daft off loads, plus a couple of other basic errors, was an unusual sight.
Nevertheless, when the Hornets players settled down the team scored some cracking tries.
Credit goes to Saddleworth who never took a backward step all game.
Congratulations to all players of both sides for an entertaining display of rugby league.

19 Apr 09, Leyland Warriors v's Halton F H
HFH U9’s made an early start on a glorious Sunday morning for their trip to Leyland Warriors.
On arrival at Leyland, the Hornets were told that the opposition only had eight players, so it was agreed that an eight a side game was the best option.
Maybe due to the journey or the heat, the HFH U9’s made a slow lapse start on their first two sets and with the ball they made silly daft mistakes which gave Leyland a huge lift.
Lewis Bates scored first for the HFH U9s, with this happening after the ball had gone through six pairs of hands.
Leyland scored a deserved equaliser with a good try wide on the right.
The Leyland try woke the Hornets players up and for the rest of the first half the HFH U9’s defended as everyone knows they can and they kept Leyland Warriors at bay.
In attack, the Hornets scored four more tries to make the half time score 01 – 05.
In the second half, the game plan from the Hornets was a lot better and they kept Leyland out for the whole of the second half.
The Hornets scored six more tries, some of which were as a result of great team work.
Leyland to their credit kept on coming at the Hornets and they contributed to a good game of junior rugby league.
