07 Feb 10, Blackbrook v's Halton F H
HFH U9s opened the second half of their season with a clash away to great rivals Blackbrook Royals.
A late kick-off time off ensured the Hornets were well prepared for the game, despite a long layoff over the Christmas period. An end to end first half saw the two teams go ‘toe-to-toe’, with HFH forwards taking their opponents ‘head on’. This laid a great platform for the Hornets backs to work from.
The teams entered the second half in exactly the same manner.
Both teams had bruising defences and a willingness to move the ball around for a great entertaining game of Junior Ruby League. As the match wore on, Blackbrook were able to just nose themselves in front. However, the never say die attitude of the Hornets players ensured they had the last say with the final try of the game.
This game was played in great spirits and if the HFH u9’s continue with this progression, they will have a fantastic season ahead.

14 Feb 10, Halton F H v's Clock Face
The young HFH U9’s turned up looking for their first win of 2010 against a big in-form Clock Face side. With a full squad to choose from the Hornets took to the field full of confidence after last week’s great performance.
However it was Clock Face who started the better of the two teams. Hornets responded quickly and put their game plan in place showing a maturity beyond their years. Once again the forwards were hungry for the battle up the middle, setting out a perfect platform for the backs to strike.
By half time, the Hornets had taken a 05 - 04 lead.
In the second half, the HFH U9’s players kicked on in the second half to open up a two score gap.
Clock Face had the last say with a score right on full time however, the Hornets had done enough and were victorious 09 - 08.
The tries were spread out throughout the team and all were as a result of excellent team work.

28 Feb 10, Orrell St James v's Halton F H
The HFH U9s travelled to Orrell for their first ever encounter with Orrell St James U9s. On a small pitch, the Hornets adapted quickly and dropped into their familiar game plan.
The forwards ran strongly and set the platform for the tone of the match which Hornets completely dominated through great power play, good running and support play.
Most pleasing however was the fact that the Hornets were able to keep their opponents to only one score, showing great determination, strength and concentration to defend their try line.
Once again the game was played in a great spirit, and credit goes to the Orrell team who never gave up, and scored a fine try in the second half.

07 Mar 10, Halton F H v's West Bank Bears
The HFH U9’s extended their winning run to 3 games with one of their best ever team performances, and over local rivals West Bank Bears.
The Hornets were switched on from the very start and swamped their opponents with a fantastically structured and defensive display.
Every player played their part in this performance, carrying on from last week's effort, and only conceding only a solitary try in each half. On attack the Hornets played a controlled and disciplined game, scoring some fantastic tries as a result of some great teamwork.
The HFH U8’s coaching team are really proud of the fact that the player’s are working really hard in training and it was a delight to see it pay dividends on the pitch, with such a mature performance.
A lot of credit must also go to the West Bank Bears players, who played their part in a tough and exciting game of rugby league, played in a great spirit throughout.

21 Mar 10, Halton F H v's Wigan St Patricks
On the warmest Sunday of the year so far, the HFH U9’s travelled to Wigan St Patricks in confident mood.
The game started well with both defences on top but the Hornets were unable to take advantage of their recent great attacking form. The Wigan side’s defence was outstanding and also uncharacteristically, the Hornets put several passes to ground.
As the half time whistle was blown, the Hornets were level at 02 - 02.
The second half followed much the same patterns, with the Hornets fluent attack somewhat disjointed, and their usual aggressive goal line defence not moving up as quickly as they have in recent games.
Wigan St Patricks continued to play well, scoring off the final play of the game to clinch a hard fought, but exciting 05 - 04 victory.
Both teams gave it their all and a minutes silence was observed impeccably at the start of the game as a tribute to HFH’s Louie Corker’s granddad who sadly passed away suddenly last week.

10 Apr 10, Halton F H v's Wigan St Patricks [Stobart Stadium Halton]
Curtain Raiser to the Widnes Vikings verses Toulouse league fixture.
HFH v WSP 4:45pm Kick Off.
The young Hornets made their debut at the Stobart Stadium in a curtain raiser to the Widnes v Toulouse match. In front of a loud supportive crowd, both sets of players took to the pitch desperate to put on a good performance.
Hornets were soon into their stride, the forwards relentless driving allowing space for their backs to exploit the wide open spaces of the Widnes pitch. In defence, every one of the Hornets players showed up, with the big St Pats team unable to break through up the middle, or out wide. Despite the heat, the Hornets were able to maintain their high tempo, fast paced game, and turned round 03 - 00 in front.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, and the Hornets continued to live up to the occasion with aggressive, controlled defence and disciplined attacking play. Credit goes to St Pats who played their part in an excellent spirited game, and came back with a well deserved try late on in the second half.
However, the Hornets had the well deserved last say with the final try on full time to seal a 07 - 01 victory.
The victorious Hornets players milked the applause with a lap of honour in front of the Widnes fans.
Thanks to both sets of players and fans for their part in this special occasion, and best wishes from everyone at the HFH Club for the injured St Pats player.
Get well soon.

11 Apr 10, Rylands v's Halton F H
Fresh from their debut victory at the Stobart Stadium Halton, the Hornets coaches demanded a big effort from their players to turn around a second game in less than 24 hours against a tough, well organised Ryland’s side.
As expected, the Hornets were a little slow to pick up the pace of the game and Ryland’s exploited this with some terrific handling to move ahead. However, after a wakeup call from the coaching staff, the Hornets were able to call upon their energy reserves to pull themselves back into the game. Their defence tightened up, and on attack, they started to run the ball harder and move it around quicker, turning round a deficit score line into a positive one, with the scoreboard reading 03 – 05 at half time.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Ryland’s threw everything at the Hornets line with some strong runs and good handling, but the Hornets were equal to the task, defending their line with passion and attacking with pace, width and invention.
The Hornets were able to keep daylight between themselves and Ryland’s to eventually finish the match with their second win in two days, with a final score of 06 – 09.
Credit again to Ryland’s who were excellent hosts and provided a really stern opposition in a game played in great spirits.
The Hornets coaches are very proud of how the team have played in the last two games showing a maturity and determination beyond their years. To recognise this, the HFH U9’s coaches named each player as their award winners over the last two games.
Keep up the good work boys.

18 Apr 10, Newton Storm v's Halton F H
The Halton Farnworth Hornets U9’s continued their excellent form with a hard fought win away to Newton Storm.
The Hornets took to the pitch without any coaches this week and proved just how well developed as a team they have become. They overcame their now traditional slow opening to soon click in to gear.
Once again the Hornets forwards punched holes in the opposition defence setting the platform for some fine attacking moves. Hornets moved to half time five tries two ahead.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with the Hornets relentless defensive efforts driving Storm back, whilst on attack the Hornets were once again fluent and aggressive, continually pushing the opposition back.
The Hornets eventually ran out winners, nine tries to four.
Credit has to go to both teams who put in 100% on an extremely hot day and also some solid and aggressive tackling.
The Hornets coaches are really pleased with how the team performed on their own on the pitch today.

25 Apr 10, Halton F H v's Leigh East
The HFH U9’s continued their good form of late with a fantastic performance against a tough and determined Leigh East side.
Over the last few weeks HFH U9’s have really been training hard defensively, and all those efforts paid off in a tremendous first half where they were able to restrict their visitors to no scores. This defensive platform allowed the attack to take care of itself, with forwards and backs’ combining for some truly brilliant team tries.
In the second half, Hornets changed their structure slightly and a slight lapse and good Leigh East attacking saw the Hornets line breached once. However that was it for the visitors, whilst again some fluent attacking with pace and flair allowed the Hornets to run away again with some great tries.
The HFH U9’s coaches were delighted with the determination and concentration shown by the Hornets players to restrict their visitors to a single score in two halves of rugby. This is a testament to the effort that the players are putting in, both on the field and in training.
Credit also must go to Leigh East who never gave up and put in 100% right to the very end.

02 May 10, Crosfields v's Halton F H
The HFH U9’s maintained their winning run with a hard fought victory over their near neighbours from Warrington, Crosfield Cobras.
The Hornets struggled to adapt to a tiny pitch, which didn’t suit their expansive passing and running game, and were drawn into a tough uncompromising forward battle up the middle of the pitch. Once again the Hornets made a slow start allowing the opposition to score off the first set. However, again some harsh words from the coaching staff woke the players up and Hornets fought their way back in with some really aggressive defence and turned round at half time two tries apiece.
The second half followed a similar pattern based around strong straight running, and again aggressive defence. This time however, the Hornets were switched on from the very start and were able to force errors from their opposition.
The Hornets scored two further tries but Crosfield Cobras ensured a dramatic finish with a superb length of the field try to leave just one score between the two teams. However the Hornets are made of stern stuff and put in a heroic final set of tackling to keep their hosts out and seal the win.
Although it was a tough game, it was played in great spirits by both sides and thanks go to Crosfield Cobras for playing their part in an excellent advert for Junior Rugby League.

09 May 10, Halton F H v's Chorley Panthers
The HFH U9’s hosted Chorley Panthers on a hot Sunday morning as the season nears to an end. After last week's hard fought victory on a pitch the size of a postage stamp, the Hornets were able to play on a full size pitch, to make the most of what proved to be a very physical but very enjoyable game.
Both teams were fired up from the very first whistle. However, unlike previous weeks, the young Hornets team were switched on from the very first whistle and able to hold out their opponents strong attacking play. This concentration and commitment paid dividends during the first half as the Hornets held out everything the Panthers threw at them. On attack, the Hornets forwards ran strongly and played a more enterprising offloading game than usual, forcing the Panthers on the back foot time and time again. As the half time whistle blew in the searing heat, the Hornets were 2 tries to nil in the lead.
As the second half opened, the Hornets continued with their aggressive, disciplined play and opened up a bigger lead. However, Chorley dug really deep and fought back with some bright attacking play, to finally breaking the Hornets line. However, the Hornets took on the challenge head on and responded with some enterprising play in the backs, leading to some more fine tries of their own. As the heat and the big pitch took its toll, both teams traded tries, and when the referee blew the final whistle the Hornets had ran out winners.
Once again, the Hornets coaches were really proud of how the team responded to the challenges in front of them, against an excellent Chorley side. The game was played in great spirits and all parents and players of both sides really enjoyed the match.

16 May 10, Burtonwood v's Halton F H
The recent fine weather disappeared as the Hornets played host to rivals Burtonwood on a cool Sunday morning at Wilmere Lane Sports Ground.
Unfortunately the Hornets team was depleted through injuries and availability consequently they were only able field eight players. However, these eight players more than made up for their missing team mates with a valiant effort against a very strong, physical and skilful Burtonwood team.
Before the Hornets could settle into the game they found themselves two tries down, however they soon got into their stride in both attack and defence and fought back to a score line of just 01 – 02 at half time.
In the second half, with the Bulldogs team clearly rattled by the Hornets great play, an upset was on the cards as the two teams traded tries and the Hornets squeezed their opponents with more pressure.
However, as the Hornets tired through lack of substitutes, the Bulldogs broke the Hornets line with a great length of the field try to put the game just out of reach of the Hornets.
Nonetheless, the Hornets fought back but could not overthrow their rivals, who held on for a deserved victory.
The Hornets can hold their heads high after this fantastic display without six of their regular players, and as the season draws to a close they look in great shape to enter the U10’s age group range.
Once again the game was played in great spirits by both sides, and thanks go to Burtonwood for their part in it.

23 May 10, Atherton Dragons v's Halton F H
As the season draws to a close, the HFH U9’s travelled to Atherton to face a much improved Atherton Dragons side.
In blistering heat, the Hornets lost the toss and faced some strong aggressive running from the Dragons, right from the very first whistle. This seemed to unsettle the Hornets early on and they made a few uncharacteristic errors including missing tackles and spilling the ball. Despite this, the heart of the HFH players is not in doubt and they hung on to go in at half time 3 tries to 1 down, which could have been much worse.
Taking shade for the team talk, the HFH coaches asked the players to up their game in the second half and the Hornets players responded well. The forwards once again ran with power, the backs moved the ball well, and Atherton was on the back foot.
A monumental second half effort saw the Hornets tackling tighten up and as the referee called the last set, the Hornets were level at 4 tries each.
However, their hearts were broken on the very last play of the game as Atherton's best player broke through a tiring defence to score a great match winning try.
The real winner on the day was junior rugby league in a great game enjoyed by players, coaches and parents alike. The HFH U9’s did have the last word winning the goal kicking competition at the end, to round off a great day.
Thanks to Atherton for being great hosts.
